Enkele jaren geleden was het de normaalste zaak van de wereld. Bijna alle Intercity's werden in Duitsland getrokken door een BR 101. Inmiddels zijn veel diensten van de 101 komen te vervallen, omdat ze zijn vervangen door onder andere ICE treinstellen of IC2 rijtuigen met een TRAXX.

Van de oorspronkelijk 145 locs zijn er inmiddels al tientallen gesloopt.

In 2025 zitten de locs onder andere voor de Intercity's tussen Köln en Gera. In Gotha wordt de loc gewisseld voor een BR 245.

Deze Intercity's zijn opvallend vanwege hun korte lengte, slechts 5 rijtuigen.

Op de foto komt DB 101 111 met de 5 rijtuigen tellende IC 2152 langs bij Grebenstein, onderweg van Gotha naar Köln Hbf.
