As the scientific name implies, gray tree frogs are variable in color owing to their ability to camouflage themselves from gray to green, depending on the substrate where they are sitting. The degree of mottling varies.[3] They can change from nearly black to nearly white. They change color at a slower rate than a chameleon. Dead gray tree frogs and ones in unnatural surroundings are predominantly gray. The female does not croak and has a white throat; however, the male does croak and has a black/gray throat. The female is usually larger than the male.
They are relatively small compared to other North American frog species, typically attaining no more than 1.5 to 2 in (3.8 to 5.1 cm). The Cope's gray tree frog, or diploid gray tree frog, retained its 2N (24) original chromosome set. Hybridization between these species results in early mortality of many larvae, but some individuals survive to adulthood though they have reduced fertility.[5]
Both H. chrysoscelis and H. versicolor have bright-yellow patches on their hind legs, which distinguishes them from other tree frogs, such as H. avivoca.[6] The bright patches are normally only visible while the frog is jumping. Both species of gray tree frogs are slightly sexually dimorphic. Males have black or gray throats, while the throats of the females are lighter.[7]
Tadpoles have rounded bodies (as opposed to the more elongated bodies of stream species) with high, wide tails that can be colored red if predators are in the system. Metamorphosis can occur as quickly as two months with optimal conditions. At metamorphosis, the new froglets will almost always turn green for a day or two before changing to the more common gray. Young frogs will also sometimes maintain a light green color and turn gray or darker green after reaching adulthood.
A few glamor shots of a little Gray Treefrog I saw earlier this month. I love finding these guys and getting a few photos but their camouflage is just so good. I am sure I am missing many more than I am seeing.

My neighbor had Gray Treefrogs breeding in his pool cover this spring, and he saved a handful of tadpoles for me when he opened up the pool. - Allegany County, NY, USA
I went out to the apple tree to get my memory card out of my trail camera and was startled by the tree frog who was beside it. I went in to get my camera and a flashlight and it had move to the top of my trail camera.

This is the first one of these beautiful little creatures that I've seen in years. They are only an inch long and normally camouflaged against their background being able to change color to match the tree bark or foliage they are on. However, they haven't figured out how to match the color of my white back door! I hear them singing from the trees and shrubs in my neighborhood quite often, especially before, during and after a light rain. Note the suction cup toe pads for climbing!

This one didn't make the cut for the slideshow. Original photo was Oct 17, this one was Nov 6th. What a difference a few weeks makes, the nicely coloured leaves that were all over had mostly blown away from the hill, but there's a bit of colour still hanging on in that maple in the background.
It was a warmish day, but the frog was likely tucked away someplace safe for the winter.
I was very excited this past Saturday 10 Aug. 2019 to find about a dozen tiny Gray tree frogs on plants and trees close to a frog pond I often visit for dragonfly and frog photos.
I first noticed these amazing little frogs at this location in 2014. I saw them again in late summer 2015, but then poof gone for 2016, 17 and 18. I feared that they had totaly died out. Then Saturday after looking around the trees and plants near the pond I found none and was on my way back to my car when I spotted the first one on a low leaffy plant on the tree line, then I saw another and another all hiding in plain sight.
They have the ability to slowly change their color to the color of whatever they are sitting on which is a very effective camouflage.
Cope's Gray Treefrog - Hyla chrysoscelis (Dryophytes chrysoscelis)
This individual was lollygagging around in a little roadside puddle mid-morning in Durham NC. I have video/audio of them calling in the puddle from a few days prior. I believe that rapid trill verifies the ID as Hyla chrysoscelis. (Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toads were also calling.)

Note, also, that chrysoscelis seems to be the only species found in the lower Piedmont of North Carolina, as opposed to the nearly identical H. versicolor.
I used a circular polarizing filter to suppress glare off the water's surface.
This little guy accidentally stowed away on a house plant that was summering outside. We didn't discover him until early January, when we moved him into an aquarium. Since then he has been fed mealworms and crickets. His holiday will be over in May.
I was driving at a snail's pace down a back road - looking for warblers. I noticed this knot in the tree looked weird - so I pulled over and took a closer look. I was pleasantly surprised to see a gray tree frog! I went back later and he had moved on :)

I went out to sit down at our picnic table to have a sandwich and I got this feeling that someone was looking at me, this little Gray tree frog was betwenn the planks of the table and watching me intently. Scan of a photo taken in the 70's.
