Macro Monday: #ComplementaryColours

Actually I wanted to do something with yellow and purple or blue for "Complementary Colours" (and why do I always end up writing "contemporary" or "contemplating" when I mean complementary?). The beautiful blue and yellow iris bouquet (something that has both colours in it!) in the flowerpot on the living room table, for instance, would have been perfect. But then I spotted this happy little red radish on my Sunday breakfast table, smiling at me broadly. "You lookin' for me?", it seemed to ask. "Yes, you do! I know it! Forget about those perfect iris blossoms. Forget about yellow and purple. Combine me with that grass mat, and you've got 80 percent complementemporaring colours, too. Plus, I've got that certain something, the X factor, that 'je ne sais quoi', haven't I?!?" "And what could that be?", I asked. "That toothless, toothpaste-defying smile, maybe? Hair - or what is that - in your face? That weird winking expression with only one eye open? Wait a minute, eye? What eye? You're a radish. Radishes don't have eyes. Do you think people will enjoy looking at you?", I grumbled, sensing that all my hopes of coming up with some other colour combination than the obvious red and green, and something with both colours in it on top of that, would be dashed. Dashed by a tiny, cheeky, ugly duckling type of radish. Because of pareidolia. A sign stimulus. My sign stimulus. "The tendency to interpret a vague stimulus as something known to the observer, such as seeing shapes in clouds, seeing faces in inanimate objects or abstract patterns, or hearing hidden messages in music" (Wikipedia), and immediately grab the camera and shoot. After all, it smiled at me. All the time. "But don't expect me to give you a name!", I snapped, and thought to myself "And I'll eat you after the photoshoot." "You aren't exactly a morning person, are you?", the little radish remarked wryly, and its smile got even broader. I'm sure it could read my mind.

A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone, and have a great August week ahead!

and everyone looks out the windows....wondering...

4/365 2025 Toy Photo Challenge

This is what the set up looked like. Cotton wadding from medicine bottles stuck with sticky tack to the dragon and castle.

I put a Ulanzi Light behind the drawbridge door and pointed it with a snout at the cotton wadding.

I turned off the overhead light and used another small Ulanzi light to light up the dragon's face.

Both photos were shot with a Lensbaby Sweet 50 with an f stop of 4.

The cotton 'fire' was enhanced slightly with dynamic contrast in DxO labs.

How many times did I do this before getting a successful shot?

About 20!

I learned about using cotton balls while pursuing Lego photos in both Flickr, Instagram, and FB Lego photos.

This took up my Sunday afternoon while we had rain, fog, mist, and ice outside.

Enjoy!

Since people have asked, here's a breakdown of Rat Heaven! It's based off the Super Pet (Kaytee) EZ Care Rooftop Flight Cage for birds, with my own custom brackets and shelves, and numerous store-bought pet toys and non-pet stuff that can be used as pet toys.

Specific Features:

A: Super Pet Super Sleeper - Sleep-E-Tent with zippers on the corners to convert it into a hammock or whatnot

B: 2' gray channel grates used as ladders, securely fastened

C: Wood chew blocks to distract the rats from chewing on the cage

D: Grass balls with bells inside for the same goal

E: "Burrow your own home" rat hutch made from a cool dried plant stalk with a hard outer rind and fibrous inner tissue. Supposedly irresistible to rats' burrowing instincts

F: Timber Hide-A-Way which doubles as access to the upper platform via the hole in the back corner

G: Custom L-shaped upper platform, 20"x20" with 6.5" legs, easily removable when the large front door is open

H: Custom bedding box, 13.5"X10"X1.5" built into lower platform

I: Feeding crocks with individual external access doors and cages to hold them in place

J: Wodent Wheel Senior for quiet, safe exercise, the only rodent wheel approved by the ASPCA

K: Chin-up bar for flabby ratties

L: Super Pet 26oz Chew Proof Water Bottle cleverly and securely mounted inside the cage for clean lines

M: Carefresh Blue Pet Bedding in a tray that's removable without opening the cage

N: Super Pet Grassy Mat for soothing little rat feet without obstructing bathroom access

O: Super Pet (Kaytee) EZ Care Rooftop Flight Cage with 'seed guard' for catching 'stray objects'

P: Super Pet Small Scatter-Less Pet-Ware Feeder repurposed for a secret hideaway

Q: Sticks on a rope climbing and chew toy. Two in one!

R: Super Pet Cozy Hammock angled to allow unobstructed views into the cage

S: Super Pet Play Tunnel for simulating burrowing and general rampaging

T: Balance Beam to tempt fate

U: Custom L-shaped lower platform, 20"x20" with a 6.5" and 10" leg (with box), easily removable when the large front door is open

V: Super Pet Bigger Giant Roll-A-Nest for cool-downs after running

W: Custom aluminum brackets with stainless steel hardware to support both platforms on all four sides when the outer door is closed, without getting in the way of climbing

X: Under cage storage for food, bedding, and other supplies

General Advantages:

- A rounded, power coated cage, aluminum brackets filed blunt, and smooth painted wood make for excellent comfort and ease of cleaning. No sharp corners!

- Ladders and holes provide clear access to all sections of the cage without wall climbing (apart from the secret hideaway) allowing tired or infirm rats complete mobility

- Feeding can be done at any of three locations to keep the rats guessing and engaged

- There are two front doors, a small inner door for more control, and a large outer door for complete cage access

- Everything is removable down to the bare cage in minutes, without any tools

- The entire cage itself breaks down into 1/2" thick parts for moving/thorough cleaning

- The rats have plenty of comfortable surfaces to stand on, yet with little or no training they can learn to go to the bathroom directly into the bottom pan, where they don't stand, and where clean-up is painless

- Blows away typical rat cages, which are rusty, sharp all over, small, and hard to clean

That about sums it up!

Catching up on some back shots from the beginning of the year.

In Akaora with my Flickr and blip friend. February 22, 2016 Akaora, New Zealand.

The day was cold and felt like rain but it didn't. We had a good look around ÅŒnuku.

This small church on the Onuku Maori reserve near Akaroa is the only tangible reminder of the once thriving Maori community. Completed in 1878 the church was planned to accommodate sixty people and though primarily for the Maori local, Pakeha settlers were also welcome.

A plain timber building with steeply pitched shingle roof its religious purpose is denoted by the tiny bell turret and surmounting crosses. It is picturesquely set in the bay on Akaroa Harbour and is enclosed by a delightfully unregimented picket fence.

Despite infrequent use the church is carefully maintained and is in excellent order. It is important as a memorial to the Onuku Maori and as the only Maori Church remaining on Banks Peninsula.

morning sunshine up on the top deck

remembering my former neighbor Bob this morning, who unexpectedly died last week -- he was also a great lover of photography, we had many discussions of film vs. digital -- I am very sorry to hear that he is gone.

Even my beach cover seems to be doing the happy dance. Summer is right around the bend (you wouldn't know it today in NYC where it was cold and rainy for most of it, in fact it's thundering as I type this) but there is definitely a feeling that winter is in the rearview mirror; we're moving in a certain direction, and that direction says "Let's Dance!"

A wide angle aerial view of the country road layout. This set-up has to suffice for most of the back road and farming scenes for now, and the trees and roadside details can be easily interchanged.

The base measures 30" inches wide x 8' feet long.

This is a SOD (aka: Grass Mats used to install a lawn) Dealer on 49th Street North in Clearwater, Florida. I took this Photograph in February 1996 after my Employer had just transferred me to Florida. The location is at 11413 49th St. North, Clearwater, Florida.

There was a rectangular sign outside, that read: TOMS SOD Service Inc., Deliveries, Installations, Pickups, 727-571-1119, 11413 49th St. No. (Aka North)

There was some sort of contraption/trailer with a Auger attached and what looks like a catch bag attached mounted on Wheels. This is most likely used to strip out the existing vegetation, rocks & debris to prepare the ground for the installation of the New SOD, in order to assure that the customer receives a Quality Lawn .

Disclaimer: I took these two photo on February 1996 with my Minolta Maxxim 5000 SLR using Print Film, when I was just learning photograph; so the Photo is very soft & grainy. I scanned the Color 35 mm Film Negative and used Photoshop Elements to correct the exposure to generate this Digital Image

There are perhaps very few Tamilians who have not heard or used a Pattamadai pai for sleeping or sitting on the floor! This mat is a wall hanging from famous Pattamdai, a village on the bank of Tamraparni river in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. Tamraparni starts amidst the ran forests in the Agasthyar range of the Western Ghats mountains and flows through the plains of southern Tamil Nadu.

Tirunelveli district is my second or third home since 1993. Pattamadai pai (Tamil for mat) is made of dried sedge (type of plant very similar to grass) that grows along the bank of Tamraparni river in that area. The community that make the mats are predominantly muslim and have been in that region for a long time. Traditionally women weave these mats in hand looms and depending on the length or fineness one mat can take up to couple of months. This is the only place where they make the silk mat (pattu pai) with very fine grass bunch and silk threads. Those mats are painstakingly weaved over a long time mainly for weddings. I have made friends with the local crafts persons to go see how they make them from the collection of raw materials to finished products. There are few individuals that sale their crafts directly to public. There is also a cooperative and a store at the bus stop of Pattamadai village where you can buy.

Nowadays, of course you can buy a silk one in Madras or any other fancy boutiques in Bangalore and may cost up to few hundred US$. In recent years, local craftsmen such as Mr. A.S. Peer Mahummad has been diversitfying in making not only just simple mats for sleeping but also wall hangings, table mats, runners etc. Here is more info... www.thehinduimages.com/hindu/photoDetail.do?photoId=2449509

While there is still some work to be done out there, most people are headed out to the woods and water in the more wild sections of Baynard County.

The Hawaiians we met on Maui were all incredibly friendly. We found this guy sitting under the big Banyan Tree in central Lahaina weaving hats and bowls out of palm trees. I lingered for a moment and he asked my kids what they liked and then turned around and made them what they had asked for.

He initially refused payment when offered for his services, and only after I refused to take my money back did he cease his protestations.

Here he is making a fishing pole for my son. He was truly a pleasure to watch, and I only wish I could remember his name.

Many gymnastic centers use rubber floors because they can help children jump higher without risk of injury.

A side trial from the Vestal Railroad Trail passes a pond. It is the first real hard freeze of the season. A sprinkling of the snow that fell this morning lies on the ice. You can still see the fallen leaves under the it.

Typha sp. (cattails) used to make a grass mat. Used for insulation from the cold ground, doors for debris shelters and comfortable ground sitting mats.

Wet Area Matting - In situations where water, oils, grease, or other kinds of fluids might be present, a rubber anti-fatigue matting system is necessary. These wet-area mats often provide drainage as well as cushioning, improving the safety of the area. Workers stand in comfort, elevated above slippery contaminants such as liquids, grease, and oils, which are drained away below.

I took this shot as the driver moved quickly to put the bow into the floating grass mat and swung the stern to the right (starboard). The image is nothing great but I like it because it gives me that rollercoaster stomach feeling I had on the airboat and because it shows the amazing diversity of plants and animals common in Florida lakes.

The backing plate for these cheap shelves is a white plastic panel and was just a little too ugly. So, I bought this grass mat at a local dollar store and put it in front of the structural backing plate. I think it looks pretty sharp.

This is a very old picture as my daughter is now 28 and the mother of a darling little boy. She was about 6 or 7 when this picture was taken with the cradle and the dolls. This picture is a definite pre-remodel photo as I hated the parquet floors, the grassmat wallpaper, and the carpet. Eventually we tore off the wallpaper, put down ceramic tile, and recarpeted the house.
