I'm playing with some graphing of metafilter data; this a graph of the connections between pairs of users who have favorited one another's content at least three times -- that is, for every pair of userids shown, user A has assigned at least 3 favorites to user B and vice versa, though the two numbers may be very different.

Graph created using Graphviz's "neato" executable. It's very cool and easy to use, but getting data to look as good as I want remains a challenge.

This graph is from Avon Sound, just a few miles away, very local. This is pretty much what we experienced.

We had a rental house in Frisco NC where we rode out Hurricane Matthew. Our house is tall, on stilts, and has total exposure to northern winds. That's what we got on the backside eyewall - it went from 10mph wind to gusts of 80mph in less than 10 minutes.

Here are some videos which show fairly chronologically a sequence of events which we experienced firsthand:

Type of Graph: Linear

Equation: f(x) = (1/4) x

Description: The picture shown was taken during some home renovation at a friend’s house. This picture was rather simple to model. As is evidenced by the second photo, the model was, for the most part, accurate. In order to model the linear concept, I chose this picture of a board, propped up against a table. This allowed for a relatively straight diagonal line, making the model extremely appropriate. This photo provides evidence of the suitable fit of the model. Then again, linear graphs are generally straight-forward. I only had to play with the numbers in my function for a few seconds to find a nearly perfect fit.

So I've been working on a stock analysis program. The idea is to have little analysis modules, and I can plug them in and test them to see whether they have any predictive power or help explain previous stock behavior.

So I've been writing the whole framework for testing and using the modules, but I haven't actually worked on anything that actually ANALYZES. I made a simple module just for testing, so I'd have something to go off of.

I gave it a list of 100 super-huge stocks -- Ones like IBM, Coca Cola, McDonalds, etc. I set it a year in the past, then let it make predictions for what a stock's price would be four weeks in the future, then moved ahead a day, and so forth. For each day, it ranked the stocks from 1 to 100, where it thinks #1 will do the best, #100 would do the worst.

Then I grouped the results by 10s and converted everything to an APR. This is how many percent each group did over or under average.

Obviously, it has been absolutely terrible at predicting future stock prices. But once I get around to writing some analysis modules, it should be better. :-)
