Denny, a young western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) intently watches his mom working on a puzzle feeder. Denny just turned three years old. He was born 12.26.14 at the San Diego Zoo.

The Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) is a subspecies of the Western Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) that lives in mid-west Africa in the tropical rainforests from southern Nigeria to Congo River. It is the most populous species of the gorilla and the gorilla usually found in zoos. The Western Lowland Gorilla can be brown or greyish with a yellowish forehead. It also has an overhanging tip on its nose. Males measure 170-185 cm and weigh 140-275 kg. Females measure 140-155 cm and weigh 70-120 kg.
The Western Lowland Gorilla eats plants (including bamboo) and occasionally insects.
They live in family groupings of one dominant male (the silverback), five to seven adult females, children and adolescents, and possibly a few non-dominant males.

De westelijke laaglandgorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) is een ondersoort van de westelijke gorilla (Gorilla gorilla). Hij komt voor in de tropische laagland regenwouden in midden-westen-Afrika van het zuiden van Nigeria tot aan de Kongorivier. In dierentuinen is dit de meest populaire gorillasoort; ook de "avontuurlijkste" gorilla van Nederland: Bokita in Blijdorp is er een.
De westelijke laaglandgorilla is iets kleiner dan de berggorilla. Wel zijn de mannetjes met een lengte van 170-185 cm ook een stuk groter dan het vrouwtje met 140-155 cm. Het gewicht van een volwassen zilverrug zit tussen de 140-275 kg. Het vrouwtje is de helft lichter en zit op een gewicht van 70-120 kg. De gorilla heeft een brede gespierde borstkas en nek. Ook de handen en voeten zijn zeer krachtig. De vacht heeft een donker grijze tot donker bruine kleur welke het hele lichaam bedekt met uitzondering van het gezicht, palm van de hand en de voetzolen.
Het dieet van de westelijke laaglandgorilla bestaat voornamelijk uit fruit, scheuten, bladeren en schors maar af en toe eten ze ook insecten. Ze leven in familiegroepen van een dominante man (de zilverrug), vijf tot zeven volwassen vrouwen, jongen en soms een paar niet-dominante mannen.
