The sun was shining directly into the window.
The light filled the church and overwhelmed the scene.
Alone I finished my morning prayers.
All I had with me was my trusty little Kodak.

More than 25 years ago, I was walking along the Shannon on Good Friday. I met a man listening to the radio on his headphones. He took the headphones out of his ears and said with tears in his eyes: “They've agreed to the Treaty.” The Republic, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the parties in Northern Ireland had agreed to the Good Friday Agreement. This ended the civil war in Ireland. Every year on Good Friday I think of this man and that peace is possible, even if it seemed impossible for a long time and even if it is a long process to keep it stable. Good Friday has been a special day for me for over 25 years.
There were also 2 others, malefactors. led with him to be put to death, And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified Him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand and the other on the left. And Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And parting his garments among them, they cast lots. And the people stood beholding.

Christians around the globe. To be followed in two days by Easter
Sunday, to mark his Resurrection.
Purim ~ a Jewish festival celebrating the Biblical book of Esther.
Nowrouz~ the Persian New Year, which is observed with Islamic
elaboration in Iran and all the '~stan'; countries, as well as by
Zoroastrians and Baha'is.
Eid Milad -un-Nabi~ the Birth of the Prophet [saw], which is
celebrated by some but not all Sunni Muslims and, though officially
beginning on Thursday [20th], is often marked on Friday [21st].
Small Holi~ an Indian Hindu festival of bonfires, to be followed on
Saturday by Holi, a kind of Mardi Gras.
Magha Puja~ a celebration of the Buddha's first group of followers,
marked primarily in Thailand.

Each year on Good Friday, hundreds of flagellants, march around the streets of Pampanga. They do this as an act of contrition for their sins. This photo is of one of these flagellants preparing his body for the procession.

One day among a world of thorns a rose began to grow.
It was the greatest gift of God this world will ever know.
It was the will of God to show that since the world was formed,
There had to be a rose to live and die among the thorns.
