A friend & I went for a long, breezy walk around Rye Harbour before driving over to Hastings. We had a mooch around the junk shops and popped into this fab homestore, specialising in brushes and other homeward products of good design. Well worth a visit.

It was super fun getting to design this cover for Metropolis. One of the most fun projects I have ever done. Go pick one up at your local Barnes and Noble. It's a really interesting issue.

This was one of my favorite small display gardens in 2005. The "false door" with the cat silhouette seems to be an idea that could be adapted and used in many home gardens. I also loved the plant combination.

Today is Mother's Day (UK) and I'm just about to set off to see my mam and give her her gift. A pretty blue Tiffany box is always nice to receive!! It's her fave Tiffany perfume - shhh, don't tell her ;-)
And on a design note, they are my favourite for packaging - clean, simple and beautiful typography. It hits the luxury market perfectly.

It is built right into the terminal—and I mean right into, the way the Sphinx is built into the landscape rather than being separate from it. And yes, the fountain still works. I tested it. ;)
Made from an Architectural Artifact (a "not-so-deep" balcony railing from S.America) that I cleaned up/modified- and made into a Headboard.

Presenting items among Good Design Awards 2009 award-winners, the exhibition covers a variety of design, from product design, architecture, environments, communication vehicles, technologies to “Frontier design”, the futuristic ideas.

This headboard is made from Cast Aluminum staircase balustrades,
removed from the Schlesinger and Mayer Department Store
(Carson Pirie Scott building ).
Built in 1899, this department store is considered to be one of
Sullivan's most important Commissions
The detailing of the original metalwork was left to
The Winslow Brothers and Ornamental Ironworks Co., who interpreted most of Sullivan's drawings
into the actual ornaments found within his buildings.
These 3 balustrades were most likely added at a later date of remodeling to the store.
Note that 2 are from the store and one is a replica I had cast.

Sergio Rodrigues
Sergio Rodrigues has been dubbed the father of Brazilian furniture.
Indeed, he was responsible for establishing a new paradigm in design, setting himself apart with his very own language in his quest for a clearly recognizable Brazilian identity.
He became notorious for his use of robust woods like jacaranda, peroba and imbue to create quintessential icons. His notorious “Mole” armchair was an immediate success, comprised of jacaranda and upholstered cushions supported by leather straps. T
he piece, informed by Rodrigues’ playfulness and wit, readily
became associated with a typically relaxed Brazilian attitude and lifestyle.
Rodrigues furniture lets the robust thickness of Brazilian wood speak for itself with his imaginative functional forms and playful volumes.
Sergio Rodrigues was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1927. The designer graduated from the Faculdade Nacional de Arquitetura in 1952, and shortly after founded one of the first stores of modern furniture and art in Curitiba.
In 1955, Rodrigues opened the more established company Oca, which he referred to as ‘a laboratory for Brazilian furniture and handicrafts’ and became one of the most critical components in the evolution of furniture in Brazil. Rodrigues later set out on his own and has since been designing furniture, hotels, residences and notorious pre-fabricated dwellings.
Amongst his well-known works are pieces of furniture designed for the Brazilian Embassy in Rome, for the UNB (Brasília University) and the Teatro Nacional (National Theater in Brasília). The designer has worked closely with Oscar Niemeyer, as the latter's interior designer of choice for his buildings in Brasilia.
I'm quite pleased with how these turned out.
Lighting is quite a challenge.!
Creating a light - as complex as this (yes- I know- it "looks" so simple) involves a lot of precision, akin to fabricating a piece of Jewelery.
Certainly much more happening per sq.inch....versus a piece of Furniture, which I'm more used to fabricating.
Oh - and ask me what I NOW know about Nickle-Plating, next time ya see me....

I just installed 5 of these in an amazing 2 story "loft" Condo in Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood - 2 of them (33" tall/long) this size, 2 a bit smaller...and one JUMBO one in a stairwell/stairway.

It is still a pretty design. Smallish, lithe and very italian - thus quite rare as they did rust with a vengeance.
Look at this Lamp-carefully.
Look how Piet conceived of "How-To"
route the lamp cord from the bulb,
through the "shaft"
(Nickel Plated Steel- round tube) and have it insert-
snugly into a Rosewood base;
and then make a 90º turn horizontally/boring through
the Rosewood base, and
finally enter the Nickel-Plated-Steel- Round Tube
to once again, make a 90º turn to exit towards the journey
to the wallpllug and insert into the wall socket.
Phew!
Proving once again - that "simple"-
ain't-ever-so-Simple!
