These prisoners were brought to SUN Studios to make a record. They were doing time in the Tennessee State Prison. They were named the Prisonaires and "Just Walkin' in the Rain" was good enough to get them pardons ala Lead Belly many years before.
This gold aluminum cover was designed to protect the Voyager 1 and 2 "Sounds of Earth" gold-plated records from micrometeorite bombardment, but also serves a double purpose in providing the finder a key to playing the record. The explanatory diagram appears on both the inner and outer surfaces of the cover, as the outer diagram will be eroded in time. Flying aboard Voyagers 1 and 2 are identical "golden" records, carrying the story of Earth far into deep space. The 12 inch gold-plated copper discs contain greetings in 60 languages, samples of music from different cultures and eras, and natural and man-made sounds from Earth. They also contain electronic information that an advanced technological civilization could convert into diagrams and photographs.

This piece was inspired by the most 'out of this world' gold records of the 1970's: The golden records aboard each of the voyager spacecraft and David Bowie's Alaiddin Sane. The work of Carl Sagan and David Bowie has been a great inspiration for me over the years so I decided to create a tribute to these swell fellas. I've been wanting to give embroidering on wood board a go and this seemed like an appropriate project because of all the awful wood paneling that was so popular in the 1970s.
Maija interviewed Scott Ian for a Finnish music magazine. Probably should have used a larger aperture.
Somehow, we're tempted to create a set "Bald and/or bearded rockstars".

The Flagg Grove School was the childhood School of Tina Turner. The school has been preserved and relocated to be a Tina Turner Museum, and it's free to visit. Inside the school museum are several of Turner's performance outfits, gold records and photos. A portion of the inside is recreated to look like the school would have appeared when she was a student.
This is one of the exhibits at the conveniently located West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center. It is just off Interstate 40 at exit 56. The free museum has several exhibits of West Tennessee including: Tina Turner's School, Sleepy John Estes home, West TN Music, Cotton, Hatchie River and Lincoln exhibits.

One of the walls of golden records on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. Looks like a few platinum ones as well.
Hard to believe its 20yrs now that Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash. I remember it clearly as i was out fishing at Jumpinpin when it was announced over the radio, it was the 27th August 1990, they played "The Sky is Crying" which he had recorded in 1985 during the "Soul to Soul" sessions. First heard of Stevie well before he recorded with David Bowie on "Lets Dance". Big, big fan of this incredible blues guitarist. Found out later we have the same birth day too.

The Trophy Room at the Graceland Mansion containing Elvis' Gold and Platinum records.
Day six of our Route 66 road trip saw us leaving the 'Mother Road, and travelling South through Missouri a small part of Arkansas before getting to Memphis, Tennessee where we had a tour around Elvis Presley's Graceland which was quite fun. After that we drove all the way back up to Sikeston ready to get back onto Route 66 the day after.
A copy of the record that's stuck to the side of the Voyager craft. Hopefully "they" can still buy a stylus for their turntables when they find it.
Grave Marker of Buddy Wayne Knox, a legend of Rock and Roll music, Dreamland Historical Cemetery, Canyon, Texas.
Buddy Wayne Knox passed away St. Valentine's Day, February 14, 1999 after a sudden onset of cancer. Born in Happy, Texas July 20, 1933, Buddy died as he lived, with great spirit and courage. He was a star of the Rockabilly era, a contemporary of Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley with a number of charted gold hits to his credit, "Party Doll" being the most recognized.
