Goldfinch enjoying the Sunflower hearts.

Seen here about 1.5 metres away from where I'm sitting in our garden on a hot and sunny Tuesday afternoon. I was actually watching a Greenfinch rooting out the new buds from our newly planted Dianthus...we'd been putting the blame on Mr Squirrel!!

Not just provided by the weather but also the glorious colours of the little Goldfinch. They are a bird that I don't recall growing up with but these days they seem to be an ever present in the local woodlands and gardens.

A European goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) doing exactly what its beak has evolved to do - feeding on thistle seeds. This was taken on a murky afternoon at the College Lake nature reserve in Buckinghamshire, England where packs of these birds descend on the thistle plants during autumn.

A quiet day for birds in the garden today, but I managed to get a few images of the Goldfinches landing on a mossy perch I'd placed near the sunflower heart feeders.
