Another session of water drop shots, this time with a light cream and Xantham gum liquid mixture with mostly red colour (but I added some black and blue later on) for the drops. Man, this was tricky! It seems that with this liquid solution, even the amount of liquid in the MIOPS container has an impact on the timing of the drops so I had to alter it quite often. I used the Mirror Up function in the camera to avoid having to deal with shutter lag. Oh, and I filled the container catching the drops with the leftover Xantham gum mixture and water to the brim, exploiting the water's surface tension to hide the container's edge and get as much of an infinity feel as possible.

I used 2 Godox speedlights off-camera with the background one variying in power and main one on 1/64. The background one had a gel mounted and the other, with a softbox mounted, illuminated the drop. The background was simply varying semi-transparent plastic binders in front of a white background. ISO 200, 1/250 shutter speed and f/14. Hard-earned lesson: Even the background flash should NOT have too high power (more than 1/16 or even 1/32) - most shots were completely worthless because of motion blur and unfortunately I didn't notice this or even think of it until I saw them on the big screen…tosser I am!

Focus was achieved by standing a pen attached to a bunch of Blu Tac in the bowl so it was completely stable. With the camera switched off I fired the MIOPS Splash to see where the drop landed and then positioned the pen accordingly, with the drop landing slightly off-center towards the side facing the camera. Then I focused on the pen using autofocus to get perfect focus. I use back button focus so the camera doesn't try to focus with each shot :)

I need to do another session soon to make my flash power/motion blur failure right! I hope you enjoy the shots - I do, although I am not 100% satisfiied.

Det är ett tag sen jag satte fyr på något i huset, jag hoppades att jag kunde göra "det stort". Tyvärr fick jag inte sätta fyr på något då jag använde för mycket diesel sist ute lol. Jag fick lov att tända ett ljus, min fru hade äran att vara vattenpistol vakt och släcka det innan jag hade fler idéer.

Here comes my contribution to fotosöndag's weekly challenge - fire and water.

It's been a while since I set fire to something in the house so I was hoping to "go big". Sadly I wasn't allowed to start a fire due to last time I used too much diesel lol. I was allowed to light a candle though, with my wife on water gun duty to put it out before I got bigger ideas.....

Strobist info: Single Godox AD200 placed in a gridded softbox directly above the candle and hand. Candle was placed on a mirror to reflect some light back into the shadows on the hand.

So, I decided to up the game and purchased a MIOPS Splash kit to control the entire shooting process from an app on my phone and be able to do more than one drop in each shot.

Two flashes, one lighting the bowl with the water with a softbox mounted. The second lighting the background, which started out as blue background but the water drops slowly changed it into a cool looking abstract.

Again, I have just used plain cold water for the shots with no additives or colours. Xanthan gum and food colurs coming up in a future session.

Man, I love that MIOPS Splash thing. Awesome gadget. It takes some tinkering to get the settings right and I am positive that I will more or less have to do it all over again next time because of small changes in water temperature, ambient temperature or whatever.
