REFRAIN:
REFRAIN
Ah c'est pas le régime allégé.
La résistance
Passe par le gobage effréné
De rillettes du Mans(se).
C'est une drogue, un friandise,
A un tel point
Qu'on en planque dans les valises
Comme Jean Gabin.
...Et ça c'est pas bien.
REFRAIN

This is not black and white or monochrome. This is the black sandy and stone beaches of VÃk; a seaside town in Southern Iceland that exists (and thrives) under the shadow of Katla.
Lately, the inhabitants of VÃk are a little nervous of and its said that most have their go bags packed. These are what you grab, when say, the fireman or police officer knocks on your door and tells you to evacuate immediately. So a change of clothes, personal keepsakes and items that are irreplaceable and easily transportable are ready to go at a moment's notice.
Katla, Iceland's most powerful volcano is overdue. It's a large subglacial volcano that's been dormant under the Mýrdalsjökull glacier for almost 100 years, but it’s considered a very active volcano with twenty documented eruptions between 930 and 1918, with intervals of 13–95 years. If it does erupt, it could spell the end of this little seaside town.

Day Bag
The point of this bag is to get me through the day. I usually have a bag or toolbox close by as well for generalized storage and quick cleanup, but mostly these bags are used for things that I rarely use or don't need all the time. The effect gives me places that I can drop off things that I'm not going to need, and leaves me to have only the essentials with me.
The size of this particular bag is nice because it's so limited, I can only really afford to carry things that I'm going to use. I might switch the psp for an ipod nano 5g if i'm planning on going to the park or the gym.
Having two smartphones allows me to keep both pretty clean and uncluttered. The Note is for calls, maps, evernote, and all things utility. The S3 is an alternative gaming machine, used for google hangouts, and is the device that I normally hand off when kids in the family want to play with my phone.
I also use hair ties for just about everything because they're a lot nicer than rubberbands to hold my stuff together. 22c in particular is where I hook my keys and waterbottle if I'm walking a ways. This is connected to the strap. The ones on the wallet hold a credit card in place, especially if I'm strapped for cash and I want to use one card over another.
Finally, I'll actually use my bluetooth headset. I'll initiate a tasker sequence using my pebble and dictate notes while driving, or if I'm just brainstorming and the words just won't come out on paper.

Jordon gave me a "go bag" for our anniversary. Lifehacker has been raving about them for a while and they are bad that is full of your essentials so you are prepared to go at a moments notice and do something cool.
He put it together himself and picked up a canvas bag at Quinn the Eskimo. It's a parachuters shoulder bag so if I need to jump out of an airplane, I'll be fine.
In it he got me a case for my iPod Nano and a new LowePro case for my beloved (and aging) Fuji Finepix J10 camera. It's battery was dying so he got me a replacement battery as well so I can take photos all day now. Since I am horrible with keeping track of SD cards, he got me an Optex media holder in it as well.
In the next compartment was some pens and a new journal to keep notes on my adventures. For energy there was a Jersey Milk chocolate bar.
He also put in a funky water bottle and a Starbucks Tea Press. In case I got bored, he bought me a National Georgraphic Travel magazine (which just listed Saskatoon as a great place to travel to)
Working artist bag: My bag is designed so that I can work no matter where I am in the world but when combined w/suitcase full of clothes I am not weighed down. I wanted a bag and set up big enough to do everything I do at home but streamlined enough that it's not an ordeal hopping planes or trains. Also important was that once i get to where I am going, I can use the bag on daily basis not merely as container to get all my equipment to destination.

1) Timbuk2 Q Backpack - I detailed my FWP saga on twitter wherein I continually destroyed previous OGIO bags. I love this bag. It fits all of this stuff perfectly with room to spare.
2) Apple iPad 2 with Zagg keyboard case, which has subsequently come out of my bag.
3) Apple EarPods - I don’t listen to music much via headphones these days. At this point, they’re really a travel accessory for flights, airports, etc.
4) Apple Magic Mouse - On the odd occaision that I feel like I really need my mousing to be away from my typing, this comes in handy. I almost never use it, but that doesn’t mean never never, so it stays in the bag.
5) Kleenex
6) Prescription Sunglasses - For (other) reasons. I go to Zenni Optical for all of my glasses needs, because I can’t stomach spending hundreds of dollars per pair. I tend to re-buy 1–2x per year, and my wife buys her pairs in bulk. The case is about a decade old from a previous glasses prescription. It’s almost dead, but has survived being thrown from a car and a bike, and was otherwise free.
7) Pen, Pencil, Stylus
8) CPR Mask and various keys that aren't in my EDC.
9) Post-It Notes - Great for leaving notes for your wife, child, employee, dude who parked like a moron in the parking lot, etc.
10) Business Cards - Always useful for closing conversations. They’re boring and as such suck for starting conversations.
11) Magsafe Charger
12) iPad and iPod adapters - Even though #14 has 2 USB ports, I always get the best charge for my iPhone or iPad from a stock adapter. Just the way it is.
13) Belkin mini surge protector - They keep changing the model numbers, but this one is what I have. It’s vital when traveling, and even in some conference rooms where everyone is fighting for the 2–4 outlets on the table. Suddenly there are two additional outlets and you’re the hero. Done.
14) Magsafe extension cord - Because about once a month I’m in a conference room where the only power is in a recessed box that won’t accomodate the MagSafe brick. That’s basically the only reason this travels with me anywhere.
15) Scrum Planning Poker Cards - Because groupthink is a terrible situation, and inevitably one person on my team forgets theirs, and I don’t (usually) vote. When I do vote, I have cards.
16) Overflow wallet - See My EDC for the wallet I carry on my person. This one carries everything else I might possibly need that’s wallet-shaped. It’s probably overstuffed, but when I need my Panera rewards card, it’s right there, you know?
17) Cables! Adapters! - Oh My! These used to take up about 40% of a large Grid-It, but once I switched to this bag I stopped needing the Grid-It and figured out that all of these cables would also fit, airtight, in a snack-sized Zip-Loc bag. Which is even better.
18) Work iPhone 4S in LifeProof case, because if I break it I buy it.
19) Plantronics Voyager Legend - I’ve tried several headsets in the last few years. None of them are as comfortable or as easily rechargeable. The sound quality and noise isolation leave something to be desired, but usually I’m in my car with the windows up when wearing this, and it’s sufficient. Some sort of feature where it turns off the side of the mic away from your face so that nobody knows you’re walking in from the parking lot would be super.
20) Handmade coffee cozy - My wife’e friend sells these on Etsy, though appears to be neglecting her store at the moment. Saves one starbucks cardboard sleeve at a time, and let’s me represent my favorite football team.
21) 15" MacBook Pro, Late 2011, Non-Retina - My baby.
saw a few people post their bag shots so i thought it'll be fun to show mine before i packed them for school on Monday.
1. Vaude 40 Litre backpack, so that my 17"inch laptop can fit in along with my other stuff. outside of school this backpack is becomes my companion on my travels.
2. Sweater, because lecture theaters have funky temp sensors
3. Extra clothes, hair gel, toothbrush. After my daily track running on campus, comes in handy when i do overnights in studio
4. Swim gear: trunks, googles and a towel. Because i head to the school pool after a run and before lectures at 10am.
5. Dell Inspiron 9300, 17"inch makes a good way to do presentations without a projector. none of that dual core shite, but i'll it gets the job done. Mainly for surfing lightroom, sketchup and blasting music in studio. Affectionately known as "Neil" (see number 15)
6. Sony Ericsson K618i: to call Dad when he's nearby so that i'll get a free ride home, it saves me money
7. Creative Bluetooth Wireless Headset: connects to my K618i or laptop to stream music, no wires=no fuss. i wish the sound quality was better.
8. Sandisk Sansa e230: packed with Oasis for running along with
9. Cables: Wish i could do without them
10. Laptop power adapter: because Neil's old and his batteries don't last long
11. Bluetooth dongle and multicard reader: bluetooth so that i can do presentation with my phone's bluetooth remote control and card reader for my CF cards.
12. 100gig 2.5 inch portable HDD: for work, cad files, renders, 3d models and lecture notes and storing my RAW photo files. the rest of the space goes to Heroes, X-men, various movies, Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond.
13. Logitech mx518: can't live without it, best companion while cadding, saves time while doing sketchup models.
14. retractable mouspad: automatically rolls up neatly into its container like a mini projector screen.
15. Current Read: Neil Gaiman's Smoke and Mirrors. Currently my favorite author. Its school term but i try to read on the bus, this collection of short stories are perfect for 30 min rides.
16. Moleskin: with gridded pages because squares rock my world. mainly for sketching, pasting in photographs and recipes of ice cream.
17. muji cosmetic case: no i don't use cosmetics but i use it to store my pens, penknifes, erasers, colour pencils and such. Because i'm a messy person it keeps the desk tidy with my model making stuff inside.
18. other archi school equipment: such as set squares(i left the 45 one in studio) colour markers, more pencils.
19. Water Bottle: because i'm not a camel and i sweat alot.

Here is my lonely go pack all packed up and ready to go. I travel and visit various company manufacturing facilities as Corporate Lean Engineer. Basically, my job is to try to help processes work as efficiently as possible. Much like lifehacking or minimalism, it is breaking the work down to its core.
So back to the bag, it has four basic pockets. The biggest which carries the "work" items: laptop, notepads, reference books, etc for work. The middle pocket is for my "personal" items: my books, mags, sometimes a light jacket or hat. I like that I can separate the personal and the work, it is handy. The top outer pocket houses all the chargers, USB memory sticks, cables, MP3 Player, and headphones. The bottom outer pocket handles the laptop charger, pens, mouse, and it is where I stuff all the receipts for the expense reports. Everything is fairly simplimatic.
Namibia trip gobag. Keeping it simple for the 23 hour trip ahead.

-Hackey Sack (picked up at a Tourist Trap Shop on Vacation this year...use it as a stress ball at work.)
I'm a pro medical courier - blood, stem cells, organs. We are not allowed to carry backpacks or larger bags due to theft concerns. And we have to wear professional slacks and a company polo so pockets are limited. And HIPAA regs seriously limits what we can have in our cars as well. Since I drive a 500 mile circle - through national forests, over swampland, through rural, urban, and urbex areas at insane speeds and in all conditions I needed a basic survival kit in case my car or the world crapped out. Everything pictured as well as the Canon Elph that took the picture fits in this simple Rothco Passport travel bag available for $16 on Amazon -http://smile.amazon.com/Passport-Pouch-Travel-Wallet-Security/dp/B00H54R7RI/ref=cm_wl_huc_item.
It contains a storm whistle, LED flashlight, Leatherman Wave, Business cards and holder, matches in waterproof cylinder, medications in pill fob, my bicycle, house, and car keys, an S-biner, a Fisher space pen (bullet style), a notepad, a mini Victorinox Swiss army knife, another notebook (larger which acts as mileage log), my most frequently used cards and ID (not pictured), a cheap watch that I can destroy if need be, and a spare battery and SD card for the camera. Except for the camera and the Leatherman - all of this is cheap easily replaceable stuff that serves utility and which can be replaced if security at a blood drop point gets evil. (I've lost a few knives and a Cree flashlight that way.)

This is the bare-bones content of my go-bag. (Plus the camera, of course.)
From the top, there's a small medkit, writing material, binocs for shipspotting, A MetRx bar for sustenance (should I decide to go on a nature hike), tuning fork, Boss No 1, camera acessories, a 2GB USB drive for occasional file exchanges, a Gerber toolkit, a signaling whistle and light, a small Victorinox knife, an iPod Touch and headphones, Bicycle playing cards to practice dexterity, Oakley wraparound sunglasses, and a good book to read on dead time.
So it's a bug out bag and not a gadget bag...sue me ;-) Links and details for everything here:
haseman.blogspot.com/2008/02/72-hour-earthquake-kit-from-...
This may seem funny, but I've been prepping my emergency "go-bag" in case a tsunami/earthquake hits. This doubles as a camping kit anyway.
I live really close to the water so the risk is really high.
What's in the bag:
- 12 cans of sardines (can be opened with hand)
- 3 bottles of water
- 2 packs of cookies
- Small radio
- Headlamp
- Hand-cranked flashlight
- Swiss army knife (RAT RC-3 survival knife)
- Multi-toolset
- Spare cellphone with simcard
- Passport
- Whistle
- Duct tape
- Work gloves
- 60 feet nylon rope
- Compass
- Warm hat
- Water/Windproof jacket
- Water purification pills
- Easydry towel
- Firstaid kit
- Collapsible water bucket
- 2 large garbage bags
Outside of the bag:
- 1 person float (may replace w/ a lifejacket later)
- waterproof backpack
I still need a way to be able to start a fire, maybe I'll get firestone or waterproof matches..
The list I used for building the kit is here.
My submission to Lifehacker's Go Bag. basically, what's in my bag at any given time.
1. One water bottle. (Freebie snagged from LexisNexus at the last conference I attended. This is not always inside the bag as it depends on the weather and how much I need to drink on my commute.)
2. Fingerless arm warmers. (I have awful circulation in my arms so carry these all year round)
3. Glasses and their case
4. A small selection of my personal Moo cards. (Inner zipped pocket)
5. Oyster card (Season ticket zone 1-3. I just tap in and out. Bliss! Cover was merchandise from the last Bloc Party gig I attended and has the track listing for their second album on the back. This lives in the very front pocket for ease of reach.)
6. Zipped plastic pencil case containing various meds (hay fever, painkillers, Strepsils), make up (eyeshadow, perfume, mascara, chap stick), Bach rescue remedy, mints, Lush temple balm.
7. Swiss army knife. (Inner zipped pocket)
8. 4gb iPod Mini and noise canceling headphones. (iPod contains: music + contacts + Podtender. I might have been a student fairly recently... iPod generally lives in one of the side pockets.)
9. Wallet (coins, notes, cards, rail card - for the trips I take out of London - misc business cards, plasters, migraine pills, stamps)
10. Hand cream and powder compact. Current book (not always in there)
11. Pens, mobile phone (old and annoying), clip on light (also conference freebie, probably soon to be replaced by a penlight), 1gb USB stick (inner zipped pocket), tissues (see: hay fever)
12. City Moleskine (London, of course), just finished planner (soon to be replaced by an 18 month Moleskine), Train timetable.
13. Canvas bag for any purchases made during the day. (also snagged at last conference. Lives in second front pocket.)
Not pictured: Small pocket umbrella, set of keys, at least one pencil. Camera (Olympus C-450, slowly dying) + spare rechargeable batteries.
a Domke F-4AF and all its contents. Not pictured are the extra battery and cf cards. Making a special appearance is the D70s with Sigma 70-300mm telephoto. Lit using two SB600s off-camera and fired wirelessly.
I think I plan on using this bag for transport and storage as it is a little bulky not to mention heavy when it's fully-loaded. The FX3 bag is just about perfect for a camera and 2-3 lenses, a flash and a few other items though.
