Helgoland series: Couple goals

Last April I visited the Northern Gannets (Morus bassanus) on Helgoland. I spent almost a week watching their mating and bonding rituals and the tenderness between the breeding partners. It was so much fun - just sitting there and watching them ... there are still many pictures on my hard drive, but I can't bring myself to process them. Knowing that many of the beautiful birds I photographed in April died in the following months breaks my heart. This colony (as so many others) was severely hit by an outbreak of the Avian Flu in 2022.

Another wonderful goal achieved!

Thank so much to each of you who keep me inspire every day and motivate me to do better and better!

... And thanks to my first sponsor NVUS - Tattoos & art that every day trusts this little crazy girl!!!

Today too we don't give up!

GOLD DIGGER CASTING: Giselle Chauveau

"A diamond never starts out polished and shimmering. It once was undeveloped, but with enough pressure and time, becomes absolutely divine. I’m a goal digger with a diamond mind. My own business I mine, it will blow you away with how it shines."- Gi

Unravel by Stephanie Boutari

Located on the side of Hotel 52. ‘Unravel’ is inspired by the concept of a giant imaginary fabric or veil unraveling itself from within the center of the wall in a large sweeping motion. Its abstract composition of large curvilinear and geometric shapes is partly informed by the angle of the existing stairway and other architectural elements such as the windows. One of the main goals driving the design was a desire to create motion and visual depth, and the idea of re-revealing this site with a new identity.

Broadoak Park, and this spot is about 10 minutes walk away, although I have to cross a main road which can take ages.

I haven't got any grand travel plans for 2025. But that's OK as looking closer to home offers many possibilities. I would like to shoot more Jurassic Coast, Dartmoor and Cornwall.

And Somerset - I will be keeping a close eye on the redevelopment of this pier. I can't believe I have not shot Glastonbury Tor and then there is those skeleton trees near Exmoor.

So lots to think about and hopefully this Twixmas gloomy weather will pass. Please join me if anyone finds themselves down my way.

On another note will this Gavin and Stacey hype ever end? Only mentioning it as this is dead opposite Barry Island.

What do you see?

(Obviously not easy to say anything here, as I see comments are coming but they keep disappearing all the time....)

Across a recently frozen wetland pond, a solitary barn rests quietly with no promise of activity for the next months as nature provides punishment for those of us living in Minnesota.

Snow will inevitably pile up on the roof and will remain there until strong winds move it or the warming temperatures of spring signal its demise. No animals inside will ever again create warmth as they once did.

The beginning of a new year often propels people to set goals for the upcoming months. The goals change throughout our lives. When we are younger our eyes are set on a future that seems unlimited and we have days stretched out before us in which we either achieve lofty goals or come close to reaching them even when we fail.

Young farmers normally start out with little more than a strong back, a supportive spouse and dreams of enlarging their tent stakes as they develop a farm from eking out a living into a more prosperous quality of life.

But as their family grows and then shrinks as the kids mature and move away, a farmer’s goals change and unless one of the children joins him in running the farm, things begin to lessen in intensity as the farmer begins the inevitable slow stride toward retirement.

As we age many of us reach a point where our goals become very simple and mirror that of this barn, simply making it through another year with a supportive spouse who has chosen to walk this planet with us the majority of our lives.

My goal with this series is to explore every day scenes under the cover of darkness. A street corner, a lamp post, a doorway. Big city, small town, urban, rural. Man-made light versus nature’s darkness–––light and shadow interpreting minimalist settings in black and white. To see more in this series, check out Cover Of Darkness
