The village has become notable through its role as the fictional Darrowby in the 1978-1990 BBC TV series All Creatures Great and Small. Cringley House, which doubled as the exterior of Skeldale House in the series is in the village
La cathédrale Saint-Gilles est le plus ancien édifice religieux d’Édimbourg et l’un des plus beaux. Construite en 1120, la cathédrale Saint-Gilles était au départ un lieu de culte catholique. Elle devient un symbole du presbytérianisme en 1560 et acquiert son statut de cathédrale en 1630, bien qu’elle abrita un évêché pour 31 ans seulement. Son style gothique actuel date du 15ème siècle, suite à sa reconstruction après l’incendie qui embrasa Édimbourg en 1385. Devant la cathédrale, se dresse la statue de Walter Scott, duc de Buccleuch, entourée de licornes, animal emblématique de l'Ecosse.
I needed to get out with the camera, so headed out to Swaledale in the hope of getting up to the ruins at Crackpot Hall in the moody weather.
I arrived at Keld in monsoonal conditions with poor visibility, so I ate my sandwiches in the car and then reclined the seats and had a sleep in the hope of waiting the rain out. I woke up after about an hour and the rain had subsided so decided to go for it. The clouds lifted a bit so I headed up to the ruins and then on to the Old Lead Mines at Swinner Gill. The conditions were pretty good for waterfalls and as I had my Circular Polariser with me I decided to try my luck.
Conditions improved on the way down and I got my shots of the Old Hall ruins, which had been on my list for over 3 years. At least I had Keld and the surrounds to myself given the conditions!

One of several magnificent waterfalls on Paddock Beck which runs toward Askrigg in Wenselydale. Mill Gill Force is just beautiful, cutting its way into a gorge with lush vegetation around it. A lot easier to access than Whitfield Gill Force too.
I've always enjoyed studying the gills of mushrooms. The purpose of mushroom gills, also known as lamellae, is to produce and then release spores. When the spores drop to the ground, often they are carried away by the wind.

Beneath the cap of many mushrooms are the gills. This is the place where the spores are produced. Beyond their role in reproduction and identification, gills may be the most beautiful part of a mushroom. Some gills may run down the length of the stem, while others might not even touch it. If you follow the gill edge to the stem in this Cortinarius rotundisporus specimen you can see that the gills are smoothly notched before running briefly down the stem. Adirondacks, NY. I rock hopped over to a vantage point, a bit of a debris field midstream. The stream split around it on each side, the water following the path of least resistance to a point below where it would merge again. I wish sometimes I could do that, just run with the flow, but just getting over here proves I don't. And for what? Well, there is light ahead, upstream, a riot of color and brightness, teasing in the pools right down to my feet. Maybe there is something up there, or maybe I am a fool. I will move upstream, midstream, to see where it takes me.

Conditions in Dentdale cannot get much better than this, and the 04:40 start from home to get into position in good time was well worth the effort.
