We're back from Malta. The beauty of landscapes not leave us indifferent. Begin with the beautiful cliffs on the south coast of the island of Gozo. Here in Xlendi we arrived at sundown. A row of very impressive cliffs soaked with a golden light was simply irresistible.

MYANMAR,burma - Mandalay , around the Kuthodaw Pagoda.
The Kuthodaw Pagoda (Pagoda of Royal Merit) is a complex completed in 1868 in the Myanmar city of Mandalay. It consists of 729 stupas in the form of pavilion-like temples, each containing a white marble slab with Burmese script.
The Pali Canon, the life and teachings of Buddha, is inscribed on the marble slabs. The original gilded letters are now only colored black. The pagoda is also called "The largest book in the world" because of this extensive representation. Before the creation of this complex, the texts were mainly written down on palm leaves or wood. The inscriptions have been included by UNESCO in the list of World Documentary Heritage.
In the center of the complex there is also the gilded Maha Lawka Marazein Pagoda, which was built as early as 1857 according to the plans of the Shwezigon Pagoda.
"Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild -
With a faery, hand in hand, For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand."

A sunrise lights the Mountains on the flanks of the "Norwegian Inside Passage" as we sailed back South towards Bergen.
There is beauty everywhere around you as you sail on this magical sheltered route through the Western Fjords avoiding the more turbulent Norwegian Sea.
Our journey North and South produced many great photo opportunities as we went in Search of The Northern Lights. Only to find they actually came back home with us this week!
It's interesting how we always tried to put nature in a cage... and now, with these disturbing times we all get to experience first-hand confinement and restrictions.
Quite funny, right?
Looking back it's sad... not long ago we used to travel carefree... maybe we were even living in a golden age of tourism and travel.
Looking forward it's still sad... In the end a cage is still a cage, no matter how golden it is...
You don't have to be afraid
You don't even have to be brave
Living in a gilded cage...
The only risk is that you'll go
Go, Go

Riga’s tallest church with a tower offering a breathtaking view of the roofs of Old Town, the modern part of the city, Riga Bay and the Daugava River with its large port.
The more than 130 meters tall Gothic tower was completed at the end of the 15th century, but already in 1666 it collapsed. In 1690, a new tower was built in the Baroque style, with several domes and galleries, being the highest wooden construction in the world at the time. In 1721, lightning struck the tower and it burned down. At the decree of Russian Tsar Peter I the tower was renovated. The church was also demolished and the tower burned down during World War II.
In 1967, renovation of the tower began. This time a metal construction with an elevator was built so that the galleries can be used as sightseeing platforms. The tower is 123.25 meters high, and visitors are taken to the second gallery at the height of 72 meters.
Seven roosters of St Peter’s Church
Starting from the 15th century up to 1941, there had been a total of six wind vanes – roosters. The first rooster was bent by a storm, the second was blown down from the steeple, the third was removed because the storm had damaged it, the fourth rooster fell down in the churchyard during a storm, the fifth one collapsed, while the sixth rooster had been repaired, but came down when the tower collapsed. In 1970, a new rooster was erected, it was renovated and gilded for the 800th anniversary of the church.
Church building
St Peter’s Church was built in 1209, but just some walls and some pillars have remained from that time. Initially, it was a small hall, possibly with a separate bell tower. The current basilica was created during renovations in the 15th century.
The church hall leaves a grand impression, the middle part of it reaches a height of 30 meters. The altar part with five chapels demonstrates verticality of the Gothic style and fine profiles.
In 1997 Riga St Peter’s Church was included on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
Gold-gilded Zedi is surrounded by temples with Pyatthat. This photo shows the inside of such a temple. It did not restrict women to enter the chamber of Buddha image unlike Mahamuni Paya in Mandalay.
I bought an old, old book (Rudyard Kipling poems) from a charity shop a few weeks ago to use as backgrounds etc. It has gilded page edges, torn and worn spine, some period illustrations and classic typography. I feel a little guilty for not reading it but it’s an object of curiosity more than something that interests me from a literary perspective!
I think I’ve taken more shots this week than in the whole of 2022 put together. Spent a fair few evenings processing them, I took a week off to get away from the screen!
Do to having a new job and the hours I work, I haven't had much time to git my ass on PS and on SL , but I wanted to try and get something done for the up coming Avatrait show www.flickr.com/photos/stephenvenkman/3042696069/

Notre-Dame's high altar from the backside. When, after the fire of April 15th 2019, the firemen finally could enter the cathedral, they saw the altar untouched and the gilded cross shining through ashes and smoke.
I was out shooting birds and I saw some nice lighting on a dead fern. The SOOC image was pretty blah, but with some significant sliding, the image is now golden. HSS!
Wikipedia: A symbolic use of the grasshopper is Sir Thomas Gresham's gilded grasshopper in Lombard Street, London, dating from 1563. The building was for a while the headquarters of the Guardian Royal Exchange, but the company declined to use the symbol for fear of confusion with the locust.
