Gifted to me by a neighbour, this beautiful blue orchid was crying out to be captured. I shone a torch inside to bring out the wonderful detail in the bloom.

Blue is not a natural colour occurring in orchids. As the flower stem is growing, a food dye is injected into the flower stem. As water rises in the stem, it takes the dye with it and into the flowers. Within 24 hours you can see the dye in the flowers. This is usually done on white orchids that have very little pigment in the flowers so that the blue shows well

The 900 block of N. McClean Street, on the east side of Bloomington's Franklin Square, has an interesting history in terms of Illinois politics. Of the four stately residences on this block, three were home to late 19th and early 20th century gubernatorial candidates: Joseph W. Fifer, who served one term as Illinois Governor from 1889 to 1893; Adlai Stevenson I, who served as Vice President of the United States under Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897, but then lost a close race for governor in 1908; and Frank H. Funk, who ran and lost as the Progressive "Bull Moose" Party candidate for Illinois Governor in 1912.

This post looks at the Queen Anne style Bates-Funk House which was built about 1891 for T. M. Dates, the superintendent of transportation for the Chicago and Alton Railroad Company. Frank H. Funk (1869-19, grandson of McLean County pioneer Isaac Funk, lived in the house from 1897 to 1924.

Frank Funk was born in Bloomington in 1869. He was a Yale graduate, managed over 2,000 acres of farmland, and also had an extensive political career. He was elected state senator to the Illinois General Assembly in 1909, and held that position until 1913. As previously noted, Funk ran for Illinois governor on the Bull Moose ticket in 1912 making him the third person living in the 900 block of N. McClean St. to be a party-nominated candidate for the Illinois governorship between 1888 and 1912. Frank Funk finished his political career as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representative from 1921 to 1927. Funk died in Bloomington at the age of 71 in 1940.

The Bates-Funk House is a contributing property in Bloomington's Franklin Square Historic District, which is located northwest of downtown Bloomington. The Square is named in honor of Franklin Price, who was the mayor of Bloomington Mayor in 1856 when land for the Square was gifted to the city.

Franklin Square was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and was designated a local historic district in 1979. The houses of Franklin Square were built in a variety of architectural styles from the mid 19th century through the early 20th century, including Georgian Revival, Italianate, Colonial, Queen Anne, and Richardsonian Romanesque.

Bloomington is the seat of McLean County. It is adjacent to Normal, and is the more populous of the two principal municipalities of the Bloomington-Normal metropolitan area. Bloomington is 135 miles (217 km) southwest of Chicago, and 162 miles (261 km) northeast of St. Louis. The estimated population of Bloomington in 2019 was 77,330, with a metro population of 191,067.

Much love to you gifted souls!

Photo taken by the gifted eye of my wife, and with my edit

nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos)

This photo was given to me today. It's a scene from the Metrics Cheerleaders Saturday practice, which I attend whenever I can.

I like this photo so much that I wanted to share it. Many thanks to Shawn for taking this picture.

Beauty is all around us, if only we could look around & be grateful.

She can't walk anymore without the aid of a walking stick, but this gray-haired 91-year-old lady still has an amazing good memory.

For one thing, she still remembers the first name of my deceased mother whom she last met 60 years ago.

I was then just a little boy, so I can't recall an instant having seen her at our place of abode when she went there to pay to my mother her husband's rent for the use of a piece of farm lot. She started talking to me, however, after a young relative of hers mentioned my family name within her hearing distance, and this was when I paid a first visit to her son at his home today.

I was totally surprised when she asked me, "How's Ate Rosie?" ("Ate," a Pilipino word, is a common title of respect for an older sister, but is also used for other older non-relative woman.) In answer, I said that my mother has passed away already a decade ago at the age of 84 years old.

Taken in the capital town of Iba, Zambales, Philippines.

... And here I am again, with another photo from my last sunrise session at the beautiful, peaceful meanders of the river Adda, just downstream the Eastern arm of Lake Como, just before the river leaves the last hills to patiently delve into the Padan Plain. A little, precious world blessed with wetlands and strange, lazy bends and widenings of the river that thwart productive utilization of the area, safeguarding it.

It was just another clean, bright, absolutely cloudless sunrise (we have been experiencing mostly clean, dry weather for months now, leading to a severe drought, with the Adriatic sea flowing upstream the river Po for some 15 km as of today). Yet the early morning was gifted with a beautiful golden light that made the springy colours of the fresh buds literally burst with life. This is another detail of that amazing place I have captured by zooming in a bit, so enthralled by the beauty all around me to forget to put the lens hood on. This quiet corner of our much troubled world has the potential to heal my soul - for a while, at least. And I hope that it stirs positive feelings inside you as well - this is my gift for this weekend.

Some words about the title, that would strive for having both a literal (the weather) and a metaphorical meaning (which is totally up to you). As my fellows addicted to Douglas Adams novels would have got right in a split second, the title of this photo is related to the entry about the Earth in The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. After some 15 years or so of conscientious and extensive field research by one of its collaborators the editors, the Editors resolved to publish a somewhat drier entry:

The Earth - Mostly harmless.

Two words. Full stop. A clean, nice, simple answer to the Fermi paradox - after all, who would be interested in visiting a planet that is merely "mostly harmless"?

I have processed this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-2.0/-1.0/0/+1.0/+2.0 EV] by luminosity masks with the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal" exposure shot).

Along the journey - post-processing always is a journey of discovery to me - I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic to give a slight tonal boost to several parts of the scene. As usual, I gave the finishing touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

Raw files processed with Darktable.

They make the perfect holiday present.

AAW November 18 0 25: What you are Thankful for

WIT: I am very thankful that I have such an artistic sister-in-law who gifted me with this beautiful teacup and saucer. The fingerprints are on there, as a nod to the Chinese tradtion of tapping 3 fingers as a thank-you to the person who is refilling your cup. I made a high key presentation and put it on top of different sized plates, Although these were all white, I still converted to bw to make cleaner tones, and did a colour selection of the gold fingerprints.

I was in Messina, Sicily, for a convention - Messina, the city of the Strait. The city of the two seas, the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian - not two whichever seas, but the very stuff of myths and epics. Scylla and Charybdis haunted these narrow, deep, perilous waters.

As you would expect, I had tried to leave my camera at home (it was work, after all...), but it nevertheless jumped into my backpack, along with my Samyang wide angle lens and my tripod. Unfortunately neither of them told the remote shutter, so it stayed safe and cozy within my gear bag at home. Oh my gosh! What was the use of having a tripod while lacking a remote shutter? I just hoped that enabling the Delay exposure Mode would be sufficient to compensate for my awkward finger actually pressing the shutter release button.

So I began my Sicilian days with just as many sunrise sessions. Wow.

The weather was consistently unstable - an ever changing sky enlivened by an endless turmoil of clouds (sometimes benign, sometimes threatening and ominous), sudden showers followed by warm sun, and then again. There was at first a peculiar ambiance - a stormy mood, I would say - an epic character reminiscent of remote ages, when the gods and Cyclops trod these lands and monsters haunted these waters. I could understand the sense of awe the ancient dwellers of these places felt while contemplating such views. I could feel the presence of the gods of old just before me. Just all around me.

My second Sicilian sunrise was kind of a bipolar one: gentle and serene, bathed in a soft light when looking Southeastwards, additionally sporting the elegant, graceful shape of the Amerigo Vespucci, the renowned training ship of the Italian Navy, in the distance. Photos of the nice side of that sunrise will come in due time.

However as soon as I turned my gaze directly Eastwards... Well, the rising day was dark and ominous, and the heavy clouds looming over the strait and the rugged coastline of Calabria were pierced by a fiery glow - the glaring eye of an angry Cyclops. The Cyclopes (= Circle-eyed) were giant one-eyed creatures from Greek mythology, especially associated with Sicily and the nearby Aeolian Islands.

According to Hesiod's Theogony the three primeval cyclopes were the second brood of Uranus and Gaia - after the Titans and before the monstrous Hecatoncheires (= Hundred-Handers, also called the Centimanes). Troublemakers all the way from such parents, apparently! ;-) Anyway, eventually the Titan Cronus castrated his own father Uranus - a brilliant idea, considering the deteriorating quality of his offspring - and overcame him as the ruler of the cosmos, officially solving the issue - for a while, at least, before being overthrown himself by the Olympian gods.

There are many different traditions and myths about the Cyclopes, none of them flattering in the least: wild, solitaries, lawless, gross, rough, irascible, proud, violent, and ignorant of navigation, agriculture, and many other arts the gods had gifted the humans with. Homer's Odyssey features Polyphemus as the mightiest of the Cyclopes, and I expect that he is the best known individual among his most infamous progeny.

So, I was standing in awe before that incredible sunrise, as the glaring eye of the fierce Cyclops was inspecting the lands that were his in ages past, claiming them again. All I could do in such a situation was to make myself small and smaller and, hopefully, pass unnoticed while capturing the wild, powerful beauty of the Sunrise of the Cyclops' Eye.

The claws and feather are from a Red-Tailed Hawk. They were gifted to my daughter from a Hopi friend who lives in Arizona.

First I tried my Lensbaby Sweet 50, then my 105 macro....thinking I would put it one of the bokeh groups. Finding myself still not happy I went back to my go to 24-70. Natural east facing light.

The red-tailed hawk holds a special place in Native American culture, with a rich history and deep significance in various tribes. This majestic bird has long been revered for its strength, agility, and keen hunting skills. In many Native American traditions, the red-tailed hawk is seen as a symbol of power, vision, and spiritual guidance.

Throughout history, the red-tailed hawk has been an important figure in Native American folklore and mythology. It is often associated with the sun, representing the connection between the physical and spiritual realms. The red-tailed hawk is believed to possess the ability to see beyond what is visible to the human eye, acting as a messenger between the heavens and the earth.

Different tribes have their own unique interpretations of the red-tailed hawk’s significance. For example, in the Lakota Sioux tradition, the red-tailed hawk is considered a sacred bird that brings messages from the spirit world. In the Hopi tradition, it is believed that the red-tailed hawk carries prayers to the Creator.

Self-portrait In The Woods

(October 11th, 2020)

Bosque County, Texas, U.S.A.

In October this year, when the coronavirus pandemic in my metroplex started becoming more and more of a burden for me, I felt like escaping somewhere in nature. It happened that camping at Lake Whitney was a perfect destination. That was one of those getaway weekends that will always stay in my heart and memory for two reasons: it was so exciting as I was camping in the U.S. for the first time, plus it allowed me to reconnect with Nature at the level I've never experienced before.

My tent was suspended among the trees about four feet off the ground on the 10-acre fenced property on the west side of Lake Whitney. At the begining, I feared a little about the safety, but I quickly understood that being one with Nature is the safest thing that could ever happen to me.

I have to admit that the first night was like a nightmare; hearing all those wildlife voices was simply scary because it seemed very close to me as I was separated from outdoor world just by a thin net of my safari tent. The second night, when I got used more to the sound of night, I started hearing moaning of wildlife being killed by hunters; a lot of gunshots interrupted my sleep. I had a strange thought that people living in their cozy houses may never realize how cruel can be life in the forest at night; how cruel people entertain themsleves at night in the forest. I also felt that if those hunters were killing animals in front of my eyes, I might try to kill them myself at the very same moment even if just with a kitchen knife. I strongly believe I was born to live out of the system, because watching what's happening with the world makes me heart bleed too much. I'm particularly concerned about animal and plants' world.

Aside from a few inconveniences related to my high sensitivity, it was a very educational three-day stay that made me ponder upon important questions. It was also a delight to breathe fresh air, falling asleep with starry sky over my head, waking up with the sunrise and chirping birds.

To tell the truth, I was lazy like never before to take pictures. I just wanted to be present there with my all senses, not to lose a moment of the time gifted to me in nature that I've been missing so much. However, on the second day, which happened to be extremely hot, I succeded in shooting a few self-portraits in the morning just before going to the lake.
