The net-zero energy home

Scientists are working to make tomorrow's homes more than just energy efficient -- they want them to be zero energy. Iain Walker, a scientist in the Lab's Energy Performance of Buildings Group, will discuss what it takes to develop net-zero energy houses that generate as much energy as they use through highly aggressive energy efficiency and on-site renewable energy generation.

 

Talking back to the grid

Imagine programming your house to use less energy if the electricity grid is full or price are high. Mary Ann Piette, deputy director of Berkeley Lab's building technology department and director of the Lab's Demand Response Research Center, will discuss how new technologies are enabling buildings to listen to the grid and automatically change their thermostat settings or lighting loads, among other demands, in response to fluctuating electricity prices.

 

The networked (and energy efficient) house

In the future, your home's lights, climate control devices, computers, windows, and appliances could be controlled via a sophisticated digital network. If it's plugged in, it'll be connected. Bruce Nordman, an energy scientist in Berkeley Lab's Energy End-Use Forecasting group, will discuss how he and other scientists are working to ensure these networks help homeowners save energy.

At its height, FirstEnergy encompassed more than three dozen coal, nuclear, natural gas and hydro power plants. Following sales and closures of several plants in response to changing economic conditions and company strategy, FirstEnergy made the decision in 2018 to exit competitive generation and transform into a regulated company. This along with a handful of other images was created by me during the mid- and late-90's. They were generated by a 3D software app called Bryce, which was designed to create landscapes. Of course, I along with a number of other devotees pushed it into other services as you'll see by these images. Almost all these pictures required repainting (using Fractal Design's Painter) or post production of some kind. This is where I gained many of the skills that I use in working on my photos today.

 

This was a cover design for a book my wife and I wrote. I still have the manuscript, but it's never been published.

This picture is one of a series which appear to have been taken from the top of the electricity generating building. Although undated it probaby dates from around 1935-8. It is definitely post the tram era which finished in December 1935. The bus on view is one of the four English Electric bodied Leyland LT5s (75-8) which were new in July 1932. The bus garage infront of the bus was contructed in 1933. The view is looking towards St. George's Road and Moor Park. Garage No.4 was built on this site in 1964.

Just over one year ago the largest coal-fired power plant west of the Mississippi shut down for good. Today, the three 775-foot tall smoke stacks were brought down – restoring the original unobstructed skyline of the Glenn Canyon Recreation Area while at the same time erasing a local landmark. Built in the 1970s near Page, Arizona, the Navajo Generating Station was originally constructed to supply the vast amount of electricity required to power the pumps of the Central Arizona Project – a 336-mile water conveyance system that today supplies water to 80% of the state’s population. Until it was closed, the plant provided a reliable supply of upwards of 17,000 MWh of electricity each year to not only the Central Arizona Project but also other customers throughout the southwest. Despite this, recognition of the negative environmental impacts of coal-based energy and the reduction in costs associated with alternative and cleaner energy sources resulted in the early closure of the plant - a story echoed by many other coal generating stations around the country. Though this marks the end of an era for coal-based energy generation and a move to cleaner, more sustainable forms of electricity, the Navajo Generating Station deserves recognition for the decades of reliability and affordable electricity it supplied. Without it, Arizona would have never grown into the great state it is today.
