I shot this photo upon the Kite Hill at Gas Works Park in Seattle. The weather was full cloudy gray. It has been raining for days. Wasn't expect the clouds to clear out faster & change colors. I was alone on this hill for a short while. Finally we, the Seattleites finally got a break from the rain!

I had come up to London to take a few pictures and photographed at Paddington Old Oak Common St Pancras and King's Cross that day. I went to King's Crost last and the light was fading fast as Class 46 46011 is seen heading heading into Gaswork's tunnel. 31127/201223/227/249/301/405. 46043 40160 47422/423/456/518/521/541. 55009/19/20 were also here. 14/12/1974.

Question to ChatGPT:

How is the site of the former Gaswerk Ost used today in Frankfurt?

Answer:

The former Gaswerk Ost site in Frankfurt, also known as the East Gasworks, is no longer used for its original purpose of gas production. Instead, it has been transformed into a mixed-use area that incorporates various functions.

One of the main uses of the site is now focused on creative industries and cultural activities. The former gasworks buildings have been repurposed into art studios, exhibition spaces, and creative workshops. This has attracted many artists, designers, and other creative professionals to the area, creating a vibrant artistic community.

Additionally, the Gaswerk Ost site also incorporates residential buildings, making it a residential area as well. The former gasometers, which were once used to store gas, have been converted into modern living spaces, providing unique and industrial-style apartments.

Furthermore, the site includes several recreational and leisure facilities. This includes parks and green spaces that are open to the public, providing a pleasant environment for relaxation and outdoor activities. The location of the former gasworks near the Main River also enhances its attractiveness.

Overall, the Gaswerk Ost site in Frankfurt is now a multifunctional area that combines artistic, residential, and recreational features, contributing to the cultural and social life of the city.

I took this shot on a moderately recent trip up to Seattle to visit family. As with any trip, I made a point to see a few of the local sites that I had never stopped by before, so on the list this time was Gasworks Park.

An amazing place and an amazing view.

The park itself contains the ruins of an old natural gas plant and is quite the curiosity to behold. The view across the bay to downtown Seattle was equally captivating. We had timed our trip in hopes of a nice sunset, which never really quite came to fruition. That was ok though, as I have found that twilight is the patient photographer's reward, so I set up to take a few photos as dusk settled in. It was quite a stormy night, the rain teased me with a sprinkle here and there but never really got started. What I remember the best though is the wind. It howled across the water, brought tears to my eyes, and numbed my hands to the point of uselessness. I loved it. There is something about being out in a fierce wind that I find more invigorating than any other weather.

Anyway, this shot captured a bit of what it felt like to stand there alone, in the shadows of the Gaswork ruins, with a face full of wind, watching the storm clouds and dusk settle in over the city where I was born. In other words, it was a fantastic evening.

In 2012 this art installation by Belfast-born artist John Kindness was unveiled on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay in Dublin. The piece was inspired by John’s experiences and memories of the ‘gas man’. Appropriately, the work is sponsored by Bord Gais.

His “Fish” in Belfast is a favourite of mine but I do not like this installation in Dublin Docklands … to me it looks like an expensive public toilet.

shot with two speedlights. One camera left and the other camera right. bounced into umbrellas. Took this photo 3 years ago and just gave a it a little workover from the ground up using lightroom and cs6. Sometimes it's just fun to take a look and play around with old photos!
