Stupéfaction de la gargouille

In architecture, a gargoyle is a carved or formed grotesque with a spout designed to convey water from a roof and away from the side of a building, thereby preventing rainwater from running down masonry walls and eroding the mortar between. Architects often used multiple gargoyles on a building to divide the flow of rainwater off the roof to minimize the potential damage from a rainstorm. A trough is cut in the back of the gargoyle and rainwater typically exits through the open mouth.

The way she is sitting reminds me of a gargoyle. Just returned from a trip to the NE to visit family so I'm having a tired Bear With Me Monday! Wait, is it Monday?

The church's history is bound up with the emergence of Worsley as a cradle of the Industrial Revolution, at the hands of the Egerton family. The Earl of Ellesmere, heir of the Duke of Bridgewater who built the Bridgewater Canal, commissioned George Gilbert Scott to design the church.

The church is built on a prominent 10-acre (4 ha) site formerly known as Cross Field on Worsley Brow. Now within a conservation area, its extensive churchyard is bounded by stone walls with lych gates on the west and south, the M60 motorway to the east, and woodland on the north. The church spire is a landmark for many drivers who pass it on the motorway which bisects the parish.

The church was built between 1844 and 1846, at a cost of £20,000 (equivalent to £380,000 in 2018). It was one of the earliest of 470 churches designed by Scott who, according to his son, regarded it as one of his most successful and purest essays in the geometrical Decorated Gothic style of the late 13th and early 14th century, with careful attention to detail.

My wife was sick in bed on our wedding anniversary, a couple weeks ago. When I went to the pharmacy to pick up medication for her, I checked out the plush toys they were selling for Valentine's Day. Maybe a soft animal, adorned with a little heart, could serve to comfort her as she recovered, while also noting our anniversary.

Nah! Jan's not the soft and frilly type. Instead, I opted for this garden ornament. And, she loves it! Janice gave it a prominent place on top of her clothing wardrobe, where she can see it each time she enters the bedroom. At least for the rest of the winter. She's so glad I didn't go for the plush toy.

Now that she's feeling better, she's trying to decide on a name for the new gargoyle.

Thinking, thinking, thinking . . .

Gargoyles and Tudor chimneys.

Hampton Court Palace has some amazing Tudor architecture.

The Gargoyles are fascinating! And I love those stunning Tudor chimneys.

Its such a great 500 year old survivor!

My friend owns this. For several years it was on a large tree in their back yard. The tree had to be cut down and it has been languishing in their garage. I told her she really should find a spot to put him outside again. She names all of her garden critters, so his name is Otto.
