The Postcard

A postally unused carte postale that was published by A. Richard of 84, Faubourg du Temple, Paris.

Visé Paris 282

The reference to 'Visé Paris' followed by a unique reference number means that the image has been inspected by the military authorities in the French capital and deemed not to be a security risk.

'Visé Paris' signifies that the card was published during or soon after the end of the Great War.

The Béthune Mining Company

The Compagnie des Mines de Béthune , sometimes called the Compagnie de Grenay after the name of the concession, was a French coal mining company in the Pas-de-Calais that was established in 1851 and nationalised in 1946.

The company had 11 mines (fosses), each with one or more shafts for the extraction of coal or ventilation. It had a large facility for screening and washing raw coal, and for producing coke and other secondary products.

The Béthune Mining Company in the Great War

During the Great War the front line crossed the mining concession, with the northern part occupied by the Germans, but despite constant shelling, production of coal continued.

The German offensive in the summer of 1914 only invaded the eastern part of the Pas-de-Calais mining region. After the first Battle of the Marne from the 6th. - 10th. September 1914, the "Race to the Sea" established a front line that cut through the mining basin. The Germans were stopped to the east of Vermelles.

The concession was cut in two along a line from Auchy-les-Mines to Liévin, with Mines 4 and 8 occupied by the Germans. The men who had not yet been mobilised were evacuated on the 4th. October 1914 in the face of the German advance, and production was suspended until the 22nd. October 1914.

Mine 4 (Vermelles) was recovered in December 1914, but Mine 8 (Auchy) was not recovered until the German troops withdrew at the end of the war. The British liberated Loos in the Battle of Loos which took place between the 25th. September to the 8th. October 1915. This front was then relatively stable throughout the war.

From October 1914 to the summer of 1918 the Mines de Béthune were continuously bombarded by German artillery, which destroyed much of its infrastructure. The surface installations of mines 4, 5 (Loos-en-Gohelle) and 7 (Mazingarbe) were totally destroyed.

All the other mines were damaged by the artillery fire. The rotunda at Loos-en-Gohelle, a circular structure for storing locomotives, was destroyed on the 20th. May 1915.

The occupation of two thirds of the mining basin by the Germans was a disaster to the French, since the basin provided almost 75% of French coal production before the Great War. Average daily production fell from 8,000 tons in 1913 to 1,000 tons in 1916.

The concession was cut by trenches that constantly changed as the front advanced and retreated. Only five extraction sites could be kept open, in the communes of Aix-Noulette, Bouvigny-Boyeffles, Bully-les-Mines, Grenay, Mazingarbe, Sains-en-Gohelle and Vermelles. These continued to supply raw coal to the war economy.

Before the war the director Louis Mercier had diversified into the manufacture of coke and tar, but during the war only the production of unprocessed raw coal continued. Operations were made very difficult by the bombardment.

The presence of the front a few kilometers from La Bassée, Loos-en-Gohelle, Lens and Notre-Dame de Lorette put the Mines de Béthune in the front line. All types of infrastructure were destroyed including headframes, buildings, rotundas, power stations and railway lines, with work halted while they were repaired.

In September 1917 the Béthune concession was an area of 13,500 hectares (33,000 acres) dominated by the summits of Haisnes, Grenay, Bouvigny and Beuvry. The east, west and north sides were mine galleries between shafts for extraction and ventilation. A long gallery led to Mine 8 in Auchy in the northeast.

The Germans were concerned about infiltration of the allies via the mines, and therefore destroyed the mine shafts , headframes and pumps. Shaft 8 was blocked by the Germans between the 240 meters (790 ft) level and the lower level.

Below the blockage the French could freely work the coal seams, even under the German side. Pumps were brought back into service below the shafts to drain the sector.

Barricades were built as early as 1916 along the main axes of the mine complex so it could be defended while allowing ventilation and the passage of men. Mines 3 and 4 in Vermelles were isolated from the rest of the mines by watertight doors.

British soldiers of the 170th. Tunnelling Company established a listening system at the bottom of shaft 8 which picked up sounds of activity in August 1917. In early September there was an underground struggle in which the Germans were forced out of the mine.

Around midnight of the 25th. - 26th. September 1917, the Germans poured about 8 tons of the suffocating gas chloropicrin into Mine 8, and carried by the ventilation systems, the gas took under four hours to travel the 6 kilometers (3.7 mi) to Mine 9 and the shaft of Mine 12.

The men around the base of Shaft 8 died, but those further away escaped via the ladders of Shaft 9. After the attack a thick masonry wall was built in the main haulage gallery to isolate the sectors near shafts 8 and 8bis.

The Germans blew up the casing of Shaft 8 and the heads of Shafts 8 and 8bis. The mines were evacuated by order of the military on the 12th. April 1918, and production resumed only after the final retreat of the enemy forces.

Poison Gas

The Battle of Loos was one of the first major British offensives mounted on the Western Front. It was also the first time that the British used poison gas. On the 25th. September 1915, 140 tons of chlorine, stored in 5,100 cylinders, were released.

However, in places it was blown back into the British lines, leading to some British soldiers being poisoned by their own side's gas.

Friendly Gas - a ghastly variation on the euphemism of Friendly Fire.

'Dulce et Decorum Est'

Below is part of a poem about gas used in warfare by Wilfred Owen (1893-1918) which he names 'Dulce et Decorum Est'.

In it he strongly refutes the Roman poet Horace's contention that it is glorious and honourable to die for your country:

"Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! - An ecstasy of fumbling,

Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;

But someone still was yelling out and stumbling

And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime ...

Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,

As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,

He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace

Behind the wagon that we flung him in,

And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,

His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;

If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood

Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,

Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud

Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues -

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest

To children ardent for some desperate glory,

The old lie: Dulce et decorum est

Pro patria mori".

When crossing a WW1 battlefield in the aftermath of a gas attack, it was not unusual to find soldiers who had shot themselves rather than undergo the agony and terror of a death from chemical suffocation.

Requiescant in Pace.

More on Poison Gas

First introduced on April the 22nd. 1915 by the Germans, the use of poison gas quickly became commonplace by all of the combatants. In the popular imagination, poison gas became one of the defining symbols of the Great War.

All of the European powers had signed the Hague Declaration in 1899, never to use poison gas in artillery shells or other projectiles. Again, the Hague Convention of 1907 forbade the use of poison weapons. But once Germany used gas on the battlefield, all bets were off, and other armies began to use it.

By 1917, one third of all artillery shells contained gas. Not surprisingly, then, about one-third of all casualties in the Allied Expeditionary Forces were from gas.

Poison gas evolved rapidly during the war. That first use in the second battle of Ypres employed tanks of gas half-buried in the earth. When the wind was blowing away from their own lines, Germans opened the valves and allowed the gas to billow towards the French lines. There were 1,000 deaths and 4,000 casualties.

It was used twice more during the same battle, against British and Canadian troops. By the autumn of 1915, all sides were using poison gas, including gas in artillery shells.

Chlorine Gas

Chlorine gas, when it contacts tissue, dissolves in water to form hydrochloric acid. Its primary target is the lung, and death usually results from inhalation injury. Chlorine can also cause severe damage to eyes and exposed mucous membranes.

Phosgene Gas

Phosgene was introduced in late 1915. It was used extensively, frequently combined with chlorine. The British called the combination “White Star”, after the symbol painted on artillery shells filled with it. Phosgene may not show major symptoms for up to 48 hours. It causes pulmonary failure and heart failure, although death is usually from lung failure.

Mustard Gas.

Nitrogen mustard was Introduced in July 1917 by the Germans. Mustard gas became known as the 'King of Battle Gases'. It eventually caused more chemical casualties than all the rest put together.

Mustard gas is a vesicant, causing severe blistering of the skin, and attacking the respiratory tract and the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth. It is especially dangerous to the eyes. While most patients recovered their vision, a significant number remained permanently blind.

Lewisite

A number of other gases were developed. The most important of these was Lewisite, which was developed only late in the war. It is also a vesicant, but with more immediate action than mustard gas. It can enter the body through the skin, and do further internal damage.

Treatment of Poison Gas Victims

Treatment was limited to supportive care. About all the medical services could do for chlorine and phosgene gas victims was to put patients on bed rest, and hope that severe symptoms didn’t emerge.

Mustard gas was another story. The casualty had to be stripped, and completely washed. The eyes had to be washed out completely to avoid damage. Although it acted more slowly, mustard also attacked the lungs, especially the lower respiratory tract, causing a refractory kind of pulmonary oedema.

Casualty Statistics

The Allied Expeditionary Force had about 1500 deaths from poison gas, out of 52,000 battlefield deaths. But the total number of gas injuries was estimated at 90,000 to 100,000, or 30% of all casualties.

Overall, there were 1.3 million gas casualties during the war, and about 90,000 deaths. About half of the deaths were among the Russian army, which was notably slow in providing protective gear to its soldiers.

'Gassed last night—gassed the night before,

Gonna get gassed again if we never get gassed any more,

When we’re gassed, we’re as sick as we can be,

'Cause phosgene and mustard gas are much too much for me.

They're warning us, they're warning us,

One respirator for the four of us.

Thank your lucky stars that three of us can run,

So one of us can use it all alone.'

-- line from soldiers' song.

Poison Gas After the Great War

After the Great War, an international agreement – the 1925 Geneva Protocol – was signed, with all nations swearing never to use poison gas. And in fact, it was not used during World War II.

It has been used in lesser subsequent conflicts, notably the Iran-Iraq war. The US, which didn’t formally sign the Protocol until 1975, has maintained stocks of poison gas, but has never used them on the battlefield since World War I.

Newer poison gases, such as the organophosphate nerve agents Sarin, Soman, Tabun, and VX, are much more potent. They cause death from pulmonary oedema and respiratory failure, and are more lethal and more rapidly-acting than the gases used in the Great War.

True war stories do not generalize. They do not indulge in abstraction or analysis.

For example. War is hell. As a moral declaration the old truism seems perfectly true, and yet because it abstracts, because it generalizes, I can’t believe it with my stomach. Nothing turns inside.

Let's watch it burn

Let's watch it burn

Let's watch this city burn the world

Let's watch this city burn

from the skyline on top of the world

Til there's nothing left of her

Let's watch this city burn the world

my body doused in ash

With two empty cans of gas

The only evidence they have

is the police sketch of my mask

and it's hard at times to ask

If you can save my heart for last

And its hard to face the facts

When the darkness fades to black

It's not just make beleive

When they make me take a seat

And they put amphetamines

in the air and make me breathe

So come on and grab your children

Look out for burning buildings

and villians who pillage

they're killin' by the millions

And billions of people die

For a lost cause

so now I pray to my nation

destroyed under god

(it's the end of the world)

All my battles have been won

But the war has just begun

Let's watch this city burn

from the skyline on top of the world

till there's nothing left of her

let's watch this city burn the world

The city looks so pretty

Do you wanna burn it with me?

Till the skies bleed ashes

and the fuckin' skyline crashes

We make ashes just with matches

To ignite the flame

and all the hopes of a youth deemed

fuckin' insane. They say:

Take the pill

in God we trust

go and kill

God loves us

after life, after death

Breathing till there is no breath

I will not die in the night

but in the light

of the sun and the ashes

of this world in my lungs

But who am I to say

Lets all just run away

grab your saints and pray

we're gonna burn this world today!

it's the end of the earth

We've been done since our birth

Let's watch this city burn

from the skyline on top of the world

till there's nothing left of her

Let's watch the city burn the world

Let's watch it burn

The city looks so pretty

do you wanna burn it with me?

The city looks so pretty

do you wanna burn it with me?

The city looks so pretty

do you wanna burn it with me?

We use the trees as torches

(Do you wanna burn it with me?)

fill the streets with corpses

(Do you wanna burn it with me?)

we watch the city fuckin bleed

(Do you wanna burn it with me?)

and Bring the world to its knees

(Do you wanna burn it with me?)

Let's watch this city burn

from the skline on top of the world

till there's nothing left of her

Let's watch this city burn the world

Let's watch this city burn

Folk medicine

(From Wikipedia)

16th-century herbalist John Gerard recommended Auricularia auricula-judae for curing a sore throat.

Auricularia auricula-judae has been used as a medicinal mushroom by many herbalists. It was used as a poultice to treat inflammations of the eye,[14] as well as a palliative for throat problems.[12] The 16th-century herbalist John Gerard, writing in 1597, recommended A. auricula-judae for a very specific use; other fungi were used more generally. He recommends the preparation of a liquid extract by boiling the fruit bodies in milk, or else leaving them steeped in beer, which would then be sipped slowly in order to cure a sore throat.[41] The resultant broth was probably not dissimilar to the Chinese soups that use A. polytricha.[41] Carolus Clusius, writing in 1601, also said that the species could be gargled to cure a sore throat,[49] and John Parkinson, writing in 1640, reported that boiling in milk or steeping in vinegar was "the onely use the are put unto that I know".[49]

Writing in 1694, herbalist John Pechey described A. auricula-judae by saying "It grows to the Trunk of the Elder-Tree. Being dried it will keep a good year. Boyl'd in Milk, or infus'd in Vinegarm 'tis good to gargle the Mouth or Throat in Quinsies, and other inflammations of the Mouth and Throat. And being infus'd in some proper Water, it is good in Diseases of the Eyes."[12] The species also saw use as an astringent due to its ability to absorb water.[41] There are recorded medicinal usages from Scotland, where it was again used as a gargle for sore throats, and from Ireland, where, in an attempt to cure jaundice, it was boiled in milk.[17] The medicinal use of A. auricula-judae continued until at least 1860, when it was still sold at Covent Garden; at the time, it was not considered edible in the United Kingdom.[41]

Medicinal use in Indonesia was also recorded in the 1930s,[48] and was more recently reported in modern-day Ghana. A report for the 2005 Commonwealth Forestry Conference examining the possible effects of deforestation in southern Ghana on medicinal and edible fungi found that A. auricula-judae was in use as a blood tonic.[50]

Pharmacology[edit]

Auricularia auricula-judae has been the subject of research into possible medicinal applications. Experiments in the 1980s concluded that two glucans isolated from the species showed potent antitumour properties when used on mice artificially implanted with Sarcoma 180 tumours.[51] This was despite the conclusion of earlier research indicating that, while aqueous extracts from several other fungal species had antitumour effects, extracts from A. auricula-judae did not.[52] Further, research on genetically diabetic mice showed that a polysaccharide extracted from A. auricula-judae had a hypoglycemic effect; mice fed with food including the polysaccharide showed reduced plasma glucose, insulin, urinary glucose and food intake.[53]

Another chemical extracted from the species was an acidic polysaccharide (made up of mostly mannose, glucose, glucuronic acid and xylose) which showed anticoagulant properties. The article concluded that "the polysaccharides from these mushrooms may constitute a new source of compounds with action on coagulation, platelet aggregation and, perhaps, on thrombosis".[54] Another study reported that the species may be effective in stopping platelet binding in vitro,[55] with possible uses regarding hypercholesterolemia. Research has shown that A. auricula-judae can be used to lower cholesterol levels generally, and, in particular, is one of two fungi shown to reduce the level of bad cholesterol.[55]

Antioxidants can help prevent and repair cell damage from free radicals (oxidants), thus slowing the aging process and reducing ones risk of diseases linked to aging (such as heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, macular degeneration, cataracts, and osteoarthritis).

Gastrointestinal Problems

Guava leaf extracts can inhibit diarrhea caused by bacteria, including Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. It has been effective in stopping diarrhea in individuals with cholera.

A decoction of guava leaves can increase the secretion of digestive enzymes and also help halt vomiting.

Weight Loss

It is believed guava leaves can benefit weight loss by preventing starch from converting into sugar.

Diabetes

Guava leaves have been used as a folk remedy to treat diabetes for many years. It reduces glucose levels in the blood without effecting levels of insulin.

Allergies

Guava leaves have an anti-allergic effect and can inhibit the release of histamine.

Other health benefits of guava leaves include:

• Relieving arthritis pain when made into a paste and applied over the affected area.

• Speeding up the healing process and relieving pain in wounds and sores when the leaves are crushed and applied over the affected area.

• Relieving toothaches when fresh guava leaves are washed and chewed on.

• Soothing a sore throat when made into a decoction and gargled with.

• Healing inflamed gums and mouth sores when made into a decoction and used as a mouthwash.

Controlling cholesterol and blood pressure, treating acne and hangovers, increasing sperm production, and protecting the prostate are also said to be health benefits of guava leaves.

Upon switching their name from Xecutioner to Obituary, the career of one of the most successful and influential Death Metal bands began. Hailing from Florida and featuring John Tardy (vocals), brother Donald Tardy (drums), Trevor Peres (guitar), Allen West (guitar), and Daniel Tucker (bass), the band signed to Roadracer Records, a now defunct division of Roadrunner, for the recording of their debut album—the immense and immeasurably heavy “Slowly We Rot” (1989). The album was engineered by the legendary Scott Burns at Morrisound Studio, which would come to be the most sought after facility for production of albums during 1990’s rise of the Death Metal genre. Unlike much death metal preceding it, the album had a sludgy feel and integrated devastatingly slow passages along with obliterating overtures that reached far beyond any point of mayhem that metal had yet to reach; the result was a carnal pleasure for doom, death and thrash fans alike coupling the adrenaline of a speedball with the slow, degrading measures of a sewer at dusk. Like them or not, Obituary was unlike anything anyone had heard before.

“Slowly We Rot” was chaotic, bass heavy mix of manic guitar solos and crashing drums, but it was undeniably characterized by vocalist John Tardy’s disarmingly horrific, gargling style, that created guttural chasms of dread which though often strived for, to date have been paralleled by none. The ability to augment tempo so drastically became the band’s trademark along with Tardy’s unique vocal style, which distinguished them clearly from the rest of the emerging Florida Death Metal bands; nowhere is this more apparent than on the prophetic title track of their debut. The fact that Obituary refrained from printing lyric sheets with their albums led people to believe that they didn't actually write any lyrics. Some may question the verbosity or absence of documented lyrics, however, any true fan has each grunt, growl and howling grimace committed to memory like an utterance from God in painstaking form—what does not exist can not be remembered, and an Obituary show is testimony to the re-creation of what your ears couldn't believe in the first place. Once again bringing augmentation to irony, Live and Dead worked quite well for the quintet, dividing your conscience yet leaving much to the imagination; not since birth have your senses been so graphically assaulted yet pleased at the same time. While such differing sensations once seemed incongruous, Obituary have proven the ability to merge unlikely dichotomies, from their slow-as-hell-yet-fast-as-fuck style to the non-evil, homegrown approach to what would largely become the satanized, bastardized, make-up wearing movement known as Death Metal.

The maturation of the musicians into songwriters taking more visionary and complex forms would soon be heard world wide as Obituary took metal by storm in 1990. Despite their youth upon release of their sophomore offering, “Cause of Death” embodied the confident swagger of the most fearsome pack-leading hound. From the insidious growls of John’s vocals to the barrage of Donald Tardy’s thunderously-metered explosions of double bass, “Cause of Death” was the intention and method as promised by the early threat of “Slowly We Rot”; for Obituary, Death was just the beginning. Accordingly, the title track alone (“Cause of Death”) would be heard, regurgitated, manipulated, complimented and collapsed—but never duplicated—on third and forth generation death metal albums for years to come. Lovecraftian imagery and aural morbidity aside, even a deaf man found fear when confronted by the formidable visage of guitarist Peres; entering Frank Watkins, the hulking henchman of a bassist from South Florida, finally provided long-needed and powerful rhythm stability to the line up. However, the grinding of the axes would not be complete until the return of Xecutioner veteran Allen West, who, along with Peres and Tardy, crafted the foundation for most of Obituary’s most primordial and historic moments. Attack now whole, Obituary had given birth—sight, sound and feel—to a true horror greater than metal had ever known.

The paradox herein lies that Obituary was anything but a summation to and end, but more an exploratory journey into the infinite dehumanization of all that is known, as confronted brazenly by their best selling release yet, “The End Complete” and later followed by the cynical and dark expedition of “World Demise”. Reunited with songwriter West, the band was conjoined like quintuplets sharing life and a name. Though finality was possibly inferred by these titles, Obituary was anything but finished. Ironically, the images conjured by songs such as “Don’t Care”, “Platonic Disease” and “World Demise” seemingly foretold of the millennium as can now be seen daily, displayed plainly across the screens of CNN and reality TV programs world wide; not bad for a bunch of rednecks from Florida with Budweiser dreams and bongwater nightmares.

2004 brings reason for Obituary fans to rejoice, the sunken eyes and heaving cries have all but abated. Obituary has only aspired to live up to the standard they have set for themselves, one that numerous bands have strived to duplicate, but never attained, falling short both creatively and in lack of the unique talent that each member contributes to the near indescribable Obituary sound. Like a forgotten corpse in the basement, Obituary are back to haunt, taunt and fully pollute your senses. Fermenting like waste in the hot Florida sun, Obituary return from hiatus with the voracity of a starven wretch. The forfeiture of time brings blessings of brutality, and assurance that the Dead shall indeed rise again. Such aural abrasion can only be heard on an Obituary album or the live circumcision of a thirty-year-old man, the choice is yours...

An evil wizard MUST-HAVE

I’m not really doing Snooty Face here. I’m gargling.

Last month my buddy Cindy Finerty took this test that determines your chances of getting breast cancer. It’s a very simple genetic test – they give you some mouthwash, you swish it around for 30 seconds and spit it back into the tube. I’m at a higher-than-average risk because Ginny had breast cancer twice, I never had kids, and then there’s my diet (meat, cheese, chocolate and liquor) and exercise program (wha?) So I want to know if my risk is 55%, 75%, or 95%. I get the results back in three weeks.

When the article came out, I called to make an appointment. They were swamped and didn’t get back to me until a few days ago. But the timing worked out great – I called this mornng and they had an opening this afternoon. They had so many women respond that they’ve extended the testing date until May 28. You do not have to live in the Coachella Valley to participate – they’ve had women flying in from around the country and around the world.

So this is an invite to my friends – if you want to do this test & can get an appointment, and need a place to stay, let me know. If I can put you up for the night, I will!

The phone number for appointments is (760) 324-8323.

The Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) is a bird in the rail family with an almost worldwide distribution outside Australasia as well as desert, many tropical rainforest, and the polar regions. In North America it used to be called the Common Gallinule, and in Europe it is generally simply referred to as "the Moorhen".

This is a common breeding bird in marsh environments and well-vegetated lakes. It is often secretive, but can become tame in some areas. Populations in areas where the waters freeze, such as southern Canada, the northern USA and eastern Europe, will migrate to more temperate climes.

It is a distinctive species, with dark plumage apart from the white undertail, yellow legs and a red facial shield. The young are browner and lack the red shield. It has a wide range of gargling calls and will emit loud hisses when threatened.

This species will consume a wide variety of vegetable material and small aquatic creatures. They forage while swimming, sometimes upending to feed, or walking through the marsh.

The nest is a roofed basket built on the ground in dense vegetation. Laying starts in spring, dependent on climate conditions between mid-March and mid-May in N hemisphere temperate regions. 8-12 eggs are usually laid per female early in the season; a second brood in summer usually has only 5-8 or even less eggs; nests may be shared by females. Incubation lasts for about three weeks. Both parents incubate and feed the young. These fledge after 40-50 days, become independent usually a few weeks thereafter, and may raise their first brood the next spring already.(Snow et al. 1998)

Despite loss of habitat in parts of its range, as a species the Common Moorhen remains plentiful and widespread.

About one dozen subspecies are today considered valid; several more have been described which are now considered junior synonyms. Most are not very readily recognizable as differences are rather subtle and often clinal. Usually, the location of a sighting is the most reliable indication as to subspecies identification, but the migratory tendencies of this species make identifications based on location not completely reliable. Old World birds have a frontal shield with rounded top and fairly parallel sides; the tailward margin of the red unfeathered area is a smooth waving line. American birds have a frontal shield that has a fairly straight top and is less wide towards the bill, giving a marked indentation to the back margin of the red area.

Despite being a bountiful species, small populations are of course more prone to extinction. The Mariana Common Moorhen or pulattat (G. c. guami) is very rare nowadays due to destruction of habitat. Only some 300 adult birds remained in 2001, and it is listed as Endangered both federally (since 1984) and locally (Takano & Haig 2004).

In addition to the extant subspecies listed below, there are two Pleistocene paleosubspecies known from fossils. These were distinct (generally larger) forms and probably the direct ancestors of some of today's Common Moorhens: Gallinula chloropus brodkorbi from the Ichetucknee River, Florida, and an undescribed Early Pleistocene form from Dursunlu, Turkey (Louchart et al. 1998).

11-11-10

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,

Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,

Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs

And towards our distant rest began to trudge.

Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots

But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;

Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots

Of disappointed shells that dropped behind.

GAS! Gas! Quick, boys! — An ecstasy of fumbling,

Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;

But someone still was yelling out and stumbling

And floundering like a man in fire or lime...

Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light

As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,

He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace

Behind the wagon that we flung him in,

And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,

His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;

If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood

Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,

Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud

Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, —

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest

To children ardent for some desperate glory,

The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est

Pro patria mori.

In this image he looks a lil surprised to see whom ever he's gargling at.

The Red currant (Ribes rubrum) is a member of the genus Ribes in the gooseberry family Grossulariaceae, native to parts of western Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Northern Italy and Northern Spain). It is a deciduous shrub normally growing to 1-1.5 m tall, occasionally 2 m, with five-lobed leaves arranged spirally on the stems. The flowers are inconspicuous yellow-green, in pendulous 4-8 cm racemes, maturing into bright red translucent edible berries about 8-12 mm diameter, with 3-10 berries on each raceme.

There are several other very similar species native in Europe, Asia and North America, also with edible fruit, though usually considered to have an inferior flavour. These include Ribes spicatum (northern Europe and northern Asia), R. schlechtendalii (northeast Europe), R. multiflorum (southeast Europe), R. petraeum (southwest Europe) and R. triste (North America; Newfoundland to Alaska and southward in mountains).

Cultivation and uses

Redcurrant berries

Currant and gooseberry output in 2005Redcurrant fruit is slightly more sour than its relative the blackcurrant, and is cultivated mainly for jams and cooked dishes, rather than for eating raw. For example, in Scandinavia it is often used in fruit soups and summer puddings, and in Germany it is also used in combination with custard or meringue as a filling for tarts. However, unlike the cranberry, it certainly can be enjoyed in its fresh state and without the addition of sugar.

Although blackcurrant is more traditionally associated with medicinal uses, English and German language herbalist sources consider redcurrant berries to have fever-reducing, sweat-inducing, menstrual-flow inducing, mildly laxative, astringent, appetite increasing, diuretic and digestive properties. Some of these proposed effects are probable, due to the verified high levels of vitamin C, fruit acids, and fiber the berries contain. Tea made from dried redcurrant leaves is said to ease the symptoms of gout and rheumatism, be useful in compresses for poorly healing wounds, and as a gargling solution for mouth infections.

According to the "Orbis Naturführer" (Orbis Verlag, Munich, 2000), while Ribes rubrum and R. nigrum are native to northern and eastern Europe, large berried cultivars of the redcurrant were first produced in Belgium and northern France in the 1600s. In modern times, numerous cultivars have been selected; some of these have escaped gardens and can be found in the wild across Europe and extending into Asia.

The white currant is also a cultivar of Ribes rubrum, being merely a less sour and colourless variant of the redcurrant, and not a separate species, though sometimes being named Ribes sativum or Ribes silvestre, and sold as a different fruit.

Christmas At the Zoo

It is Christmas Eve at the zoo. The animals are all excited.

In front of the cottage that the animals decorated themselves

the cow grazes peacefully while the giraffe gargles with salt water.

The giraffe is a world famous singer who will perform his favorite hymn

"O Holy Night" at midnight.

People will come from far away to hear him.

Behind the cottage, the dog prepares a wonderful feast for all his friends.

Rudolph is keeping watch on the roof.

He just knows something is going to happen tonight.

A bright star appears in the night sky and

the zoo is filled with beautiful music, even the turtles chime in.

Charlottesville Virginia

December 12, 2010

Or close, anyway. After the good experience with Elixir the other night, I graduated to the Delirium tonight.

It wasn't quite having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick but the disc of ruby chocolate was a nice touch.

Edible Parts: Flowers, Fruit,

Edible Uses: Drink, Salad, Jelly

Fruit - raw or cooked. The fruit is almost as large as a black currant and is produced in large bunches so it is easy to harvest. It has an acid flavor, but it is rather nice raw and is especially good when added to a porridge or muesli. Unfortunately, there is relatively little flesh and a lot of seeds, though some plants have larger and juicier fruits. The cooked fruit tastes somewhat like black currants. The fruit can also be dried and stored for later use. Flowers - raw. They can also be used to make a lemonade-like drink.

CAUTION: Barberry, goldenseal, Oregon grape and other plants containing Berberine should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid if over active thyroid gland. High doses cause vomiting, lowered blood pressure, reduced heart rate, lethargy, nose bleed, skin & eye irritation and kidney infection. Licorice as Glycyrrhiza species nullify berberine effects .

MEDICINAL USES: Alterative, Antibacterial, Antipsoriatic, Antiseborrheic, Antitumor, Blood tonic, Cholagogue, Diuretic,

Laxative, Ophthalmic, Tonic,

Oregon grape was often used by several native North American Indian tribes to treat loss of appetite and debility. Its current herbal use is mainly in the treatment of gastritis and general digestive weakness, to stimulate the kidney and gallbladder function and to reduce catarrhal problems. The root and root bark is alterative, blood tonic, cholagogue, diuretic, laxative and tonic. It improves the digestion and absorption and is taken internally in the treatment of psoriasis, syphilis, hemorrhages, stomach complaints and impure blood conditions. Externally, it has been used as a gargle for sore throats and as a wash for blurry or bloodshot eyes. The roots are harvested in late autumn or early spring and dried for later use. The fruit is an excellent gentle and safe laxative. Berberine, universally present in rhizomes of Mahonia species, has marked antibacterial effects and is used as a bitter tonic. Since it is not appreciably absorbed by the body, it is used orally in the treatment of various enteric infections, especially bacterial dysentery. It should not be used with Glycyrrhiza species (Licorice) because this nullifies the effects of the berberine. Berberine has also shown antitumour activity. The root and root bark are best harvested in the autumn.

OTHER USES: Dye, Yellow, Dark Green, Violet, Dark Bluish-purple, Hedge

A yellow dye is obtained from the inner bark of the stem and roots. It is green according to another report. Dark green, violet and dark blue-purple dyes are obtained from the fruit. A green dye is obtained from the leaves. This species can be grown as a low hedge and does not need trimming. Because of its suckering habit, it also makes a good dense ground cover plant though it can be slow to become established.

Bronze-winged Jacana & Common Moorhen - Part 3: The Chase!

Bronze-winged Jacana

The bronze-winged jacana (Metopidius indicus) is a wader in the family Jacanidae. It is the only member of the genus Metopidius. It has huge feet and claws which enables it to walk on floating vegetation in shallow lakes that are its preferred habitat. It is found in south and east Asia within the tropical zone.

The bronze-winged jacana breeds in India and southeast Asia. It is sedentary apart from seasonal dispersion. It lays four black-marked brown eggs in a floating nest. The males, as in some other wader families like the phalaropes, take responsibility for incubation.

These are conspicuous and unmistakable birds. They are 29 cm (11 in) long, but the females are larger than the males. They are mainly black, although the inner wings are very dark brown and the tail is red. There is a striking white eyestripe. The yellow bill extends up as a red coot-like frontal shield, and the legs and very long toes are grey.

Young birds have brown upperparts. Their underparts are white, with a buff foreneck.

The bronze-winged jacana's feeds on insects and other invertebrates picked from the floating vegetation or the water's surface.

Call is a wheezy piping seek-seek-seek given mostly in alarm.

When forced they sometimes choose to hide by submerging themselves. The male may carry chicks between the wings and body.

The bronze-winged jacana was formally described by the English ornithologist John Latham in 1790 and given the binomial name Parra indicus. Latham had earlier included the species in a supplement to his A General Synopsis of Birds but had not coined a scientific name. The present genus Metopidius was introduced by the German zoologist Johann Georg Wagler in 1832. The bronze-winged jacana is the only species within the genus. The name Metopidius is from the Ancient Greek word metōpidios meaning "on the forehead". The specific epithet indicus is the Latin word for "Indian". There are no recognised subspecies.

Common Moorhen

The common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) (also known as the waterhen and as the swamp chicken) is a bird species in the family Rallidae. It is distributed across many parts of the Old World.

The common moorhen lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals and other wetlands. The species is not found in the polar regions or many tropical rainforests. Elsewhere it is likely the most common rail species, except for the Eurasian coot in some regions.

The closely related common gallinule of the New World has been recognized as a separate species by most authorities, starting with the American Ornithologists' Union and the International Ornithological Committee in 2011.

The moorhen is a distinctive species, with dark plumage apart from the white undertail, yellow legs and a red frontal shield. The young are browner and lack the red shield. The frontal shield of the adult has a rounded top and fairly parallel sides; the tailward margin of the red unfeathered area is a smooth waving line. In the related common gallinule of the Americas, the frontal shield has a fairly straight top and is less wide towards the bill, giving a marked indentation to the back margin of the red area.

The common moorhen gives a wide range of gargling calls and will emit loud hisses when threatened. A midsized to large rail, it can range from 30 to 38 cm (12 to 15 in) in length and span 50 to 62 cm (20 to 24 in) across the wings. The body mass of this species can range from 192 to 500 g (6.8 to 17.6 oz).

This is a common breeding bird in marsh environments, well-vegetated lakes and even in city parks. Populations in areas where the waters freeze, such as eastern Europe, will migrate to more temperate climes.

This species will consume a wide variety of vegetable material and small aquatic creatures. They forage beside or in the water, sometimes walking on lilypads or upending in the water to feed. They are often secretive, but can become tame in some areas. Despite loss of habitat in parts of its range, the common moorhen remains plentiful and widespread.

The birds are territorial during breeding season. The nest is a basket built on the ground in dense vegetation. Laying starts in spring, between mid-March and mid-May in Northern hemisphere temperate regions. About 8 eggs are usually laid per female early in the season; a brood later in the year usually has only 5–8 or fewer eggs. Nests may be re-used by different females. Incubation lasts about three weeks. Both parents incubate and feed the young. These fledge after 40–50 days, become independent usually a few weeks thereafter, and may raise their first brood the next spring. When threatened, the young may cling to the parents' body, after which the adult birds fly away to safety, carrying their offspring with them.

I found these on the ground, in the ‘wild’.

Berries are so autumnal, only very few are edible now, except for the birds and other animals.

ROWAN berries, in dutch this is called Lijsterbes and a Lijster is a thrush and I have seen them at work in the Rowan trees, oh my!

A jelly made from them is popular for dressing game.

According to Robert James in 1747, the fruit is excellent for treating the scurvy, and the exudates from the bark is good for the diseases of the spleen.

When dried and powdered the berries have been turned into a type of bread, and in an infusion make an acidulous drink.

A gargle made from the berries is good for a sore throat and inflamed tonsils.

However, it is bitter – very bitter.

Sorbus is a genus of about 100–200 species of trees and shrubs in the rose family Rosaceae. Species of Sorbus are commonly known as white-beam, rowan, service tree and mountain-ash.

This upright, tree is the most compact of the Rowan trees making it ideal for small gardens.

Fluffy, white corymbs of flowers appear in April-May that are popular with bees.

Mid/dark green pinnate foliage turns vibrant shades of orange and red in the autumn which complements the reddish orange berries that hang in heavy clusters and are a treat for the birds.

Popular folklore maintains that a heavy crop of fruit means a hard or difficult winter.

Similarly, in Finland and Sweden, the number of fruit on the trees was used as a predictor of the snow cover during winter.

However, as fruit production for a given summer is related to weather conditions the previous summer, with warm, dry summers increasing the amount of stored sugars available for subsequent flower and fruit production, it has no predictive relationship to the weather of the next winter.

Hawthorn berries and others.

Have a great day and thanks for viewing, M, (*_*)

Between 1 Sep and 4 Dec each year Rachel and I are numerically the same age, so in 2000 while we were both 42 we had a party with a bit of a Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy theme to it. I therefore had to invent a "real" Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster; here's the result. Freezer rocks, lots of gin, Galliano (to make it golden-yellow - in the end I added a couple of drops of yellow food colour too), squeeze of lemon juice, diet tonic, and of course the necessary slice of lemon... it even tasted quite good!
