Not only were they not scared but actually quite enjoying this - sort of like a game. What was scary was the heavy machines operating with cutters & welders for the ship breaking industry. Unmindful, the kids just went about their live.
It was also mind boggling to see large number of people were using this mucky water of the river to swim, play, drink, gargle, brush their teeth and take bath all within feets of each other! Same water has the ship breaking with oil leaking making the river thick black as well as crab & fishing all side by side. Young, old, everyone seems to have the world's best immunity system! It is the main river flowing beside Dhaka, capital cityof Bangladesh. With an average depth of 39 feet (12 m) its quite amazing to see the activities along the river. Unfortunately, the river is Dhaka's main outlet of sewage waste and is threatened by pollution and waste.

Herb Robert - Geranium robertianum
Herb robert is a native member of the hardy geranium family. It is found growing throughout the British Isles and favours shaded habitats such as woods, hedgerows, banks, coastal shingle and rocky places. It is shallow rooted and the pink flowers, although self-pollinated are visited by hoverflies. It can be allowed to grow to brighten shady areas.
It is common and widespread throughout Britain and Ireland, often growing in the shade of woodland edges, next to walls and in other darker spots. When it grows in rocky, sunny sites the sunshine turns its stems a crimson red.
Herb-robert was traditionally used as an antiseptic, as well as to treat stomach upset and nosebleeds.
Its leaves are edible and used by some to make tea. They have also been used crushed and rubbed on the skin as an insect repellent, exuding a pungent smell.
Herb Robert is plant with an unpleasant odour, so it is sometimes called "Stinky Bob." The leaves, stems, and flowers are used to make medicine.
Herb Robert was traditionally carried to bring good luck and for fertility.
Herb Robert is thought to have gained its name from an ancient association with Robin Goodfellow, a house goblin from English folklore also known as Puck. However others think it was named after an 11th-century monk who cured many people using the plant.
Herb Robert is used for diarrhea, to improve functioning of the liver and gallbladder, to reduce swelling (inflammation) of the kidney, bladder, and gallbladder, and to prevent the formation of stones in the kidney, bladder, or gallbladder. It is also used for "the flu", headaches, diabetes, sinus problems, arthritis, sciatica, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and cancer.
Some people use Herb Robert as a mouthwash or gargle. The fresh leaves are chewed to relieve sore mouth and throat. It is also applied to the skin for mosquito bites, parasites, herpes, arthritis, and sciatica.
An extract of Herb Robert may slow the proliferation of bacteria and viruses.

I strongly dislike the people above us. They wear high heels all the time, and it sounded like a herd of baby ponies upstairs last night starting around 11... and it didn't stop until at least 3:30 am if not later. I woke up not only to them stomping about, but an excruciatingly painful sore throat that felt like I was swallowing needles. So, I slept awesome. I didn't go to the health center, although I should have, because despite gargling salt water, taking ibuprofen, eating a DQ blizzard, and getting sore throat things, it still hurts. Boooo. I'm also wearing a sweatshirt, my track jacket, wool socks, and have a blanket on. *fingers crossed* it isn't strep. :'(
In more exciting news, the website I designed for our student fan club has started getting google keyword hits... so that's exciting. It almost has 100 unique views for not even two weeks, so I feel pretty good about that. :)
1917 postmarked postcard view of the C. & E. (Chicago & Erie) Railroad Depot and milk station at Winfield, Indiana. This route bypassed Crown Point, but not Winfield. It ran from Chicago to Ohio via Rochester, Huntington and Decatur. Steve Shook and others provided information regarding the location of this view. It was midway between Crown Point and Lake of the Four Seasons. The photographer was looking west from Decatur Street just a few hundred feet south of East 117th Avenue. Of course, the rails and the structures are now gone.
The milk station was the small, elevated wooden structure standing beside the tracks. Eighteen milk cans were sitting in the foreground and two guys were sitting on the cow catcher of the locomotive. The guy on the right appears to be eating something from a paper bag.
A pair of advertising posters hung on the front of the depot and another pair was posted on this east end of the building. It is unclear what the GRANDMA USED sign was advertising. Maybe it was related to the PISO TABLETS advertisement. The tablets were a patent medicine product of the Piso Company. The company was founded in Warren, Pennsylvania, in 1894. They marketed the tablets for many ailments, but this ad was for SORE THROAT in particular. The tablets were dissolved in water for gargling. A barrel, two buckets and an extension ladder were on the ground below those advertisements.

The Scotch Bonnet type hot pepper has a bell shape and colours from light green through an unusual orange to a bright shiny red. It is medium pungent with some sweetness, and can be used for salads and processing into pickles.
Even though chilis may be thought of as a vegetable, their culinary usage is, generally, a spice, the part of the plant that is usually harvested is the fruit, and botany considers the plant a berry shrub.
When chilli is eaten, the brain release endorphins, a natural painkiller present in the body. The endorphins lower blood pressure and help fight against cancer.
Chillies have been used to repel garden pests, to stop barnacles on boats, as an aphrodisiac and as a cure for sore throats and varicose ulcers.
Chilli is mildly antibacterial and is an excellent gargle for sore throats and laryngitis. In Victorian England, chilli peppers were prized for their warming properties in treating arthritis, chills, rheumatism, sprains and depression.
Chillies are loaded with vitamin A, a potent antioxidant and boost to the immune system. As the pods mature and darken, high quantities of vitamin C are gradually replaced with beta carotene and the capsaicin levels are at their highest. Due to these capsaicin levels, some believe that eating chillies may have an extra thermic affect, temporarily speeding up the metabolic rate, hence burning off calories at a faster rate. The alkaloids from the capsaicin stimulate the action of stomach and intestine improving the whole digestion process!

Dracaena cinnabari, the Socotra dragon tree or dragon blood tree, is a dragon tree native to the Socotra archipelago, part of Yemen, located in the Arabian Sea. It is so called due to the red sap that the trees produce.
Dragon's blood is used as a stimulant and abortifacient. The root yields a gum-resin, used in gargle water as a stimulant, astringent and in toothpaste. The root is used in rheumatism, the leaves are a carminative.
The trees can be harvested for their crimson red resin, called dragon's blood, which was highly prized in the ancient world and is still used today. Around the Mediterranean basin it is used as a dye and as a medicine, Socotrans use it ornamentally as well as dying wool, gluing pottery, a breath freshener, and lipstick. Because of the belief that it is the blood of the dragon it is also used in ritual magic and alchemy. In 1883, the Scottish botanist Isaac Bayley Balfour identified three grades of resin; the most valuable were tear-like in appearance, then a mixture of small chips and fragments, with a mixture of fragments and debris being the cheapest. The resin of D. cinnabari is thought to have been the original source of dragon's blood until during the mediaeval and renaissance periods when other plants were used instead.
The local inhabitants of the city in the Socotra Island use the dragon's blood resin as a cure-all. Greeks, Romans, and Arabs use it in general wound healing, as a coagulant, cure for diarrhea, for dysentery diseases, for lowering fevers. It is also taken for ulcers in the mouth, throat, intestines and stomach.
Dragon's blood from D. cinnabari was used as a source of varnish for 18th-century Italian violin-makers. It was also used as tooth-paste in the 18th century. It is still used as varnish for violins and for photoengraving. Dragon's blood is also listed in a 16th-century text, Stahel und Eyssen, as an ingredient in a quenching bath for tempering steel. However this text is vague and poorly regarded as either an accurate description of smith's practice, or as a viable recipe.

The Garheim commander spoke first, "we were 50 strong, a score of us mounted knights, when we made camp a fortnight ago. Bad weather forced us to seek refuge for the night here at the mausoleum. That's when they first attacked, under the cover of darkness they hit us hard. A Queen's force of like numbers came upon us in the early hours and killed 20 brave men before we even notched an arrow. As quick as them came, they disappeared into the morning mist.
We stayed another night to honor and bury our dead, thinking the Queen's forces had left to rejoin their ranks , instead they attacked again as we broke camp. This time we held and drove them back, but not before they inflicted more casualties.
We sent word to Granhaven and we were ordered to hold this point along road. So we have, we've held up here awaiting supplies and re-reinforcements as man by man we fall to enemy's arrows or the biting cold." A wave of relief came over his face as he looked at Lord Stout, "my Lord, we appreciate every man willing to join us, but you come in too few a number to push those demons back."
Lord Stout turns to Khaldoon uncomfortably and then back to the Garheim commander. "Good sir, we will aid you as best we can, but Khaldoon and I are business men. We came to deliver war supplies and the like, we have done so in Grahnhaven and are looking to move on to Havenhill. We were caught unaware that the main road was closed off by the insurgents. Our guides thought we may be able hold up here for the night as well. We are prepared to move out in the morning. We are willing to leave the Scout Snipers behind, but our business is in Havenhill and we will press on."

Upon switching their name from Xecutioner to Obituary, the career of one of the most successful and influential Death Metal bands began. Hailing from Florida and featuring John Tardy (vocals), brother Donald Tardy (drums), Trevor Peres (guitar), Allen West (guitar), and Daniel Tucker (bass), the band signed to Roadracer Records, a now defunct division of Roadrunner, for the recording of their debut album—the immense and immeasurably heavy “Slowly We Rot” (1989). The album was engineered by the legendary Scott Burns at Morrisound Studio, which would come to be the most sought after facility for production of albums during 1990’s rise of the Death Metal genre. Unlike much death metal preceding it, the album had a sludgy feel and integrated devastatingly slow passages along with obliterating overtures that reached far beyond any point of mayhem that metal had yet to reach; the result was a carnal pleasure for doom, death and thrash fans alike coupling the adrenaline of a speedball with the slow, degrading measures of a sewer at dusk. Like them or not, Obituary was unlike anything anyone had heard before.
“Slowly We Rot” was chaotic, bass heavy mix of manic guitar solos and crashing drums, but it was undeniably characterized by vocalist John Tardy’s disarmingly horrific, gargling style, that created guttural chasms of dread which though often strived for, to date have been paralleled by none. The ability to augment tempo so drastically became the band’s trademark along with Tardy’s unique vocal style, which distinguished them clearly from the rest of the emerging Florida Death Metal bands; nowhere is this more apparent than on the prophetic title track of their debut. The fact that Obituary refrained from printing lyric sheets with their albums led people to believe that they didn't actually write any lyrics. Some may question the verbosity or absence of documented lyrics, however, any true fan has each grunt, growl and howling grimace committed to memory like an utterance from God in painstaking form—what does not exist can not be remembered, and an Obituary show is testimony to the re-creation of what your ears couldn't believe in the first place. Once again bringing augmentation to irony, Live and Dead worked quite well for the quintet, dividing your conscience yet leaving much to the imagination; not since birth have your senses been so graphically assaulted yet pleased at the same time. While such differing sensations once seemed incongruous, Obituary have proven the ability to merge unlikely dichotomies, from their slow-as-hell-yet-fast-as-fuck style to the non-evil, homegrown approach to what would largely become the satanized, bastardized, make-up wearing movement known as Death Metal.
The maturation of the musicians into songwriters taking more visionary and complex forms would soon be heard world wide as Obituary took metal by storm in 1990. Despite their youth upon release of their sophomore offering, “Cause of Death” embodied the confident swagger of the most fearsome pack-leading hound. From the insidious growls of John’s vocals to the barrage of Donald Tardy’s thunderously-metered explosions of double bass, “Cause of Death” was the intention and method as promised by the early threat of “Slowly We Rot”; for Obituary, Death was just the beginning. Accordingly, the title track alone (“Cause of Death”) would be heard, regurgitated, manipulated, complimented and collapsed—but never duplicated—on third and forth generation death metal albums for years to come. Lovecraftian imagery and aural morbidity aside, even a deaf man found fear when confronted by the formidable visage of guitarist Peres; entering Frank Watkins, the hulking henchman of a bassist from South Florida, finally provided long-needed and powerful rhythm stability to the line up. However, the grinding of the axes would not be complete until the return of Xecutioner veteran Allen West, who, along with Peres and Tardy, crafted the foundation for most of Obituary’s most primordial and historic moments. Attack now whole, Obituary had given birth—sight, sound and feel—to a true horror greater than metal had ever known.
The paradox herein lies that Obituary was anything but a summation to and end, but more an exploratory journey into the infinite dehumanization of all that is known, as confronted brazenly by their best selling release yet, “The End Complete” and later followed by the cynical and dark expedition of “World Demise”. Reunited with songwriter West, the band was conjoined like quintuplets sharing life and a name. Though finality was possibly inferred by these titles, Obituary was anything but finished. Ironically, the images conjured by songs such as “Don’t Care”, “Platonic Disease” and “World Demise” seemingly foretold of the millennium as can now be seen daily, displayed plainly across the screens of CNN and reality TV programs world wide; not bad for a bunch of rednecks from Florida with Budweiser dreams and bongwater nightmares.
2004 brings reason for Obituary fans to rejoice, the sunken eyes and heaving cries have all but abated. Obituary has only aspired to live up to the standard they have set for themselves, one that numerous bands have strived to duplicate, but never attained, falling short both creatively and in lack of the unique talent that each member contributes to the near indescribable Obituary sound. Like a forgotten corpse in the basement, Obituary are back to haunt, taunt and fully pollute your senses. Fermenting like waste in the hot Florida sun, Obituary return from hiatus with the voracity of a starven wretch. The forfeiture of time brings blessings of brutality, and assurance that the Dead shall indeed rise again. Such aural abrasion can only be heard on an Obituary album or the live circumcision of a thirty-year-old man, the choice is yours...

Lesser Whistling Duck
The lesser whistling duck (Dendrocygna javanica), also known as Indian whistling duck or lesser whistling teal, is a species of whistling duck that breeds in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. They are nocturnal feeders that during the day may be found in flocks around lakes and wet paddy fields. They can perch on trees and sometimes build their nest in the hollow of a tree. This brown and long-necked duck has broad wings that are visible in flight and produces a loud two-note wheezy call. It has a chestnut rump, differentiating it from its larger relative, the fulvous whistling duck, which has a creamy white rump.
This chestnut brown duck is confusable only with the fulvous whistling duck (D. bicolor) but has chestnut upper-tail coverts unlike the creamy white in the latter. The ring around the eye is orange to yellow. When flying straight, their head is held below the level of the body as in other Dendrocygna species. The crown appears dark and the sexes are alike in plumage. They fly slowly but with rapid wing-flapping and usually produce a repetitive wheezy seasick call as they circle overhead. They are very nocturnal and often rest during the day. The outermost primary feather has the inner vane modified. They produce very prominent whistling sound while flying.
This is a largely resident species distributed widely across lowland wetlands of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The species also occur on islands in the region including the Andamans, Nicobars and Maldives. They sometimes make local movements in response to weather and changes in water availability and the more northern birds winter further south. They are found in freshwater wetlands with good vegetation cover and often rest during the day on the banks or even on the open sea in coastal areas. Downy chicks are black with a white eyebrow and white patches on the back of the head, the wing, lower back and rump. Albino individuals have been seen in the wild.
Large numbers are sometimes found in urban wetlands such as in Kolkata and Goa, particularly during winter. In the Alipore Zoological Gardens, captive individuals were introduced in the 1930s and wild birds joined this nucleus subsequently.
With a wide distribution range between 1 and 10 million km², they are considered to have a secure global population of between two and twenty million individuals. They are not threatened by hunting as they are not considered good to eat. Hunters in Assam however have been known to raise the chicks to serve as live decoy.
Lesser whistling duck are usually gregarious. They feed mainly on plants taken from the water as well as grains from cultivated rice apart from small fish, frogs and invertebrates such as molluscs and worms. They dabble as well as dive in water. They will often waddle on the land and Common mynas have been noted to follow them on grass. Courtship involves the male facing the female and dipping and raising its bill in the water and swimming around the female. They breed during the monsoon or rainy season and may vary locally in relation to the food availability. The nest site may be a tree hole lined with twigs and grass or built in the fork of a large tree, sometimes reusing an old nest of a kite or heron or even on the ground. The clutch varies from 7 to 12 white eggs that are incubated by both the parents. Large clutches of up to 17 have been noted although these may be indications of intraspecific brood parasitism. The eggs hatch after about 22–24 days. More than one brood may be raised in a single season. Young birds may sometimes be carried on the back of the parents.
Local names like sili and silhahi in India are based on their wheezy two-note calls. They become very tame in captivity, walking about and responding to whistles. Individuals in captivity in the USA have lived for up to 9 years.
Several endoparasitic cestodes including Hymenolepis javanensis and Cittotaenia sandgroundi have been described from lesser whistling duck hosts apart from ectoparasitic bird lice and mites.
Common Moorhen
The common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) (also known as the waterhen and as the swamp chicken) is a bird species in the family Rallidae. It is distributed across many parts of the Old World.
The common moorhen lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals and other wetlands. The species is not found in the polar regions or many tropical rainforests. Elsewhere it is likely the most common rail species, except for the Eurasian coot in some regions.
The closely related common gallinule of the New World has been recognized as a separate species by most authorities, starting with the American Ornithologists' Union and the International Ornithological Committee in 2011.
The moorhen is a distinctive species, with dark plumage apart from the white undertail, yellow legs and a red frontal shield. The young are browner and lack the red shield. The frontal shield of the adult has a rounded top and fairly parallel sides; the tailward margin of the red unfeathered area is a smooth waving line. In the related common gallinule of the Americas, the frontal shield has a fairly straight top and is less wide towards the bill, giving a marked indentation to the back margin of the red area.
The common moorhen gives a wide range of gargling calls and will emit loud hisses when threatened. A midsized to large rail, it can range from 30 to 38 cm (12 to 15 in) in length and span 50 to 62 cm (20 to 24 in) across the wings. The body mass of this species can range from 192 to 500 g (6.8 to 17.6 oz).
This is a common breeding bird in marsh environments, well-vegetated lakes and even in city parks. Populations in areas where the waters freeze, such as eastern Europe, will migrate to more temperate climes.
This species will consume a wide variety of vegetable material and small aquatic creatures. They forage beside or in the water, sometimes walking on lilypads or upending in the water to feed. They are often secretive, but can become tame in some areas. Despite loss of habitat in parts of its range, the common moorhen remains plentiful and widespread.
The birds are territorial during breeding season. The nest is a basket built on the ground in dense vegetation. Laying starts in spring, between mid-March and mid-May in Northern hemisphere temperate regions. About 8 eggs are usually laid per female early in the season; a brood later in the year usually has only 5–8 or fewer eggs. Nests may be re-used by different females. Incubation lasts about three weeks. Both parents incubate and feed the young. These fledge after 40–50 days, become independent usually a few weeks thereafter, and may raise their first brood the next spring. When threatened, the young may cling to the parents' body, after which the adult birds fly away to safety, carrying their offspring with them.

1917 postmarked postcard view of the C. & E. (Chicago & Erie) Railroad Depot and milk station at Winfield, Indiana. This route bypassed Crown Point, but not Winfield. It ran from Chicago to Ohio via Rochester, Huntington and Decatur. Steve Shook and others provided information regarding the location of this view. It was midway between Crown Point and Lake of the Four Seasons. The photographer was looking west from Decatur Street just a few hundred feet south of East 117th Avenue. Of course, the rails and the structures are now gone.
The milk station was the small, elevated wooden structure standing beside the tracks. Eighteen milk cans were sitting in the foreground and two guys were sitting on the cow catcher of the locomotive. The guy on the right appears to be eating something from a paper bag.
A pair of advertising posters hung on the front of the depot and another pair was posted on this east end of the building. It is unclear what the GRANDMA USED sign was advertising. Maybe it was related to the PISO TABLETS advertisement. The tablets were a patent medicine product of the Piso Company. The company was founded in Warren, Pennsylvania, in 1894. They marketed the tablets for many ailments, but this ad was for SORE THROAT in particular. The tablets were dissolved in water for gargling. A barrel, two buckets and an extension ladder were on the ground below those advertisements.

The thing hanging off is a grotesque. A gargoyle is a similar thing that they put on older buildings but served the function of our drainspouts - to 'gargle' with the water coming off the roof.
But, i believe, a grotesque has no other function than to be, um, grotesque.

Title: The Old Man
A crime drama short story

Southbury. 2:47 a.m.
Rain on pavement. Quiet estate. All streetlights still.
The Ford Mondeo sat in the shadows, engine cold.
Inside: Thomas smoking, Shelly tying her hair back into a tight knot.
She wore a fitted blue denim jacket, collar popped, and underneath: a black polo shirt, open at the neck.
Black nitrile gloves already on.
Same cheap boots.
Same silence.
No need to speak.
They both knew why they were here.
Target:
GEORGE HAVELOCK
78 years old.
Lived alone in a semi-detached off Stanmore Road.
Ex-military. War medals.
Rumour was, he never trusted banks.
And rumour was always right.

EXT. BACK GARDEN – NIGHT
Thomas boosted the back gate open with one kick.
The house loomed dark, silent — curtains drawn, back door half-rotted.
Shelly checked the door. Locked.
She slid a folded screwdriver from her back pocket, jimmied the old lock with the patience of someone who’s done it before.
Click.
The door opened.

INT. KITCHEN – NIGHT
Dim, dated.
Old teacups. Wallpaper stained brown from years of smoke.
The hallway was cramped, lined with picture frames, thick carpet. It reeked of damp and dust.
A stair creaked overhead.
He was awake.
Shelly looked at Thomas. Nodded once.
He peeled off into the living room.
She headed up.

INT. BEDROOM – NIGHT
GEORGE HAVELOCK sat upright in bed, eyes bleary, lips parted in confusion.
He wore only a thin undershirt and boxers.
His walking stick leaned against the wall.
SHELLEY stepped into the room slowly.
No mask.
Just denim, dark eyes, and something violent humming under her breath.
GEORGE:
“Who the hell…?”
SHELLY (calm):
“Don’t move. Don’t speak. You do what I say, you die slower.”
He reached instinctively for the stick.
SHELLEY:
“Touch that and I’ll snap your fucking wrist off.”
She stepped closer, blade already in hand — short, clean, gleaming.
He froze.
She knelt on the bed, one knee pressing against his thigh.
The knife hovered just under his eye.
SHELLEY (low, focused):
“There’s a safe. In the cellar.”
GEORGE:
“Wh-what?”
SHELLEY:
“Don’t be fucking stupid. You’ve got cash. I know it. I know where.
I just need the code.”
GEORGE (panicked):
“There’s nothing in there—”
SHELLEY (sharper now):
“You really wanna see what this does to your eyeball?”
GEORGE:
“Seven… eight… four-two-one… it’s under the carpet… corner of the wine rack…”
Shelly held his gaze.
SHELLEY (flat):
“Good boy.”
She stood.
George exhaled. A moment of false relief.
Then—
She turned, stepped back to the bed, and stabbed him cleanly in the side of the neck.
He gargled.
Twitched.
Slumped.
Gone.
SHELLEY (quietly):
“Talking’s over.”

INT. BASEMENT – 5 MINUTES LATER
Thomas rolled the carpet back.
There, beneath the rack: a small steel safe.
Digital keypad. Shelly keyed in: 7-8-4-2-1
Beep. Click.
Inside:
•£45,000 in cash – mostly 50s
•Two Rolex watches in green boxes
•A .38 revolver with five bullets
Thomas whistled low.
THOMAS:
“This man didn’t trust no one.”
SHELLEY:
“He was right.”
They took everything except the gun.

INT. HALLWAY – NIGHT
Back upstairs.
She wiped the knife clean in the bathroom sink.
Rinsed her gloves. Dried them on the dead man’s towel.
Thomas zipped up the bag.
It bulged heavy.
SHELLEY:
“We’re done.”
They left through the back — just as quiet as they came in.

EXT. STREET – NIGHT
They walked two blocks in silence.
Shelly lit a cigarette.
Thomas cracked his knuckles.
SHELLEY:
“He gave it up quick. Bit disappointing.”
THOMAS:
“Not everyone wants to die in their bed.”
SHELLEY:
“He still did.”
She inhaled.
Tasted the smoke.
The win.
SHELLEY:
“Jackpot tonight.”
THOMAS:
“Clean work.”
She nodded.

INT. FORD MONDEO – NIGHT
They sat in the front seats. Engine still off.
The bag of cash on Thomas’ lap.
The Rolexes resting on the dashboard.
Shelly pulled her hair loose, leaned her head back.
THOMAS:
“What now?”
SHELLEY (quiet, with a grin):
“We wait. For the next lonely house.”
He looked at her.
Didn’t say a word.
She didn’t need him to.
They both knew — Southbury still had plenty left to
Out of hundreds of pretty shooting stars I only found about 2 small batches of white blossoms. I didn't even know there were white ones! The Okanagan-Colville and Blackfoot Indians used an infusion of the roots as an eye wash. A cool infusion of the leaves was used for eye drops and the infusion of leaves also served as a gargle for cankers.
Ice plants, carpobrotus edulis, it turns out, are a native of South Africa, but they're cultivated in gardens around the world, from where they've spread as an invasive species, covering large areas. The plants are made of lots of light or dark green finger like fleshy leaves on a greenish or reddish mat of stems, leaves that have 3 distinct sides and moist insides like aloe or other succulents. They have either yellow, white, or magenta, or purple flowers that remind me a bit of sea anemones. South Africans call the fruit of this plant sour figs, sea figs, or hottentot figs, and commonly use them in jams.

The leaf juice is antiseptic, and is gargled to treat throat and mouth infections. It is taken orally for dysentery, digestive troubles, tuberculosis and as a diuretic. With the poor light and constant jostling of kids around me, and the irritating tree enclosure and other cage furniture coming in the way, this was the best I could do to get a full side view of a llama. So despite the poor quality of the picture, I was quite pleased with what I got. Llamas live as a family and do take care of each other. If one notices a strange noise or feels threatened, a warning bray is sent out and all others become alert. They will often hum to each other as a form of communication. The groaning sound of the llama is often a sign of fear or anger. If a llama is agitated, it will lay its ears back and spit into the opponent's face. One may determine how agitated the llama is by the materials in the spit. The more irritated the llama is, the further back into each of the three stomach compartments it will try to draw materials from for its spit.
An orgle is the mating sound of a llama or alpaca, made by the sexually aroused male. The sound is reminiscent of gargling, but with a more forceful, buzzing edge. Males begin the sound when they become aroused and continue throughout the act of procreation – from 15 minutes to more than an hour. (Emirates Park Zoo, Samha, Abu Dhabi, Jan. 2015)
It is called "Toghrift" = توغريفت, or "Batboot" = بَطْبوطْ, or "Mchayar" = مْشَيَّرْ, or "Mkhamar" = مخمر, or "Matlou3" = مَطْلوعْ , etc.....This bread is called in so many different names but they are all the same bread.
This is a classic and a very popular flat bread in Morocco. Traditionally, it is served with Tagines, or for breakfast with a nice spread, and very often in Ramadan. Actually, it is very popular during Ramadan "Shour meal" (S7our = السّْحورْ); served with olive or argan oil, or butter and honey with Moroccan Atay.
In my family and in most villages in South Morocco, we call it "Toghrift"= TOR-RIFT (The first "R" is French while the second "R" is a rolled one). The letters "gh" in the word "T O GH R I F T" stands for the sound "Ghayn = غ" in Arabic, and if the two letters "gh" are used together, they are pronounced like the French "R", similar to a gargling sound in the back of the throat, like in the French word "Rivière", and which sounds the same as in the following words: "Imazighen" or "Ghriba", etc.....
On the other hand, if the letter "R" is used in some Arabic or Imazighen names, it usually stands for the rolled, English "R", as in the the word "T O G H R I F T", and it is pronounced like the English "R", as in the word "Rain". However, some people prefer to use numbers to illustrate the differences between the French and the English "R".
Toghrift and other forms of bread are served in Moroccan homes on daily basis. It is spongy, chewy and more importantly delicious. It is also enjoyed when shaped small in size, known as "Mini-Toghrifts or Mini-Batboot", then stuffed with vegetables, tuna, kefta, brochettes, cheese, sea food, etc... However you decide to serve it plain, toghrift is a delicious compliment to any meal!
I think this one was the saddest I saw, just simply inscribed 'to Dad". Some poor soul's heart is breaking.
