From Gardens Ablaze - Goldenrod has been an abundant, well-known medicinal herb for centuries, both in the Americas and in Europe, and has been used internally to treat a variety of ailments, including kidney stones, urinary tract infections, bladder inflammation, digestive problems, colds and flu, sore throat, laryngitis, fatigue, and surprisingly, hay fever and allergies. Externally, Native Americans boiled leaves and used them topically as an antiseptic and astringent for wound healing and relief from eczema, arthritis, and rheumatism.
At this point in time, some research has been done on Goldenrod, and indeed, many of the medicinal qualities attributed to it through history seem to have some basis in fact. Although, in America we don't use Goldenrod much medicinally, the German Commission E (an expert committee formed to evaluate herbs and herbal combinations) has approved Goldenrod for bladder and kidney stones, and as a diuretic to help flush out urinary infections, and it is widely accepted in Europe for these problems. It has properties that do make it useful topically for wound healing, eczema, arthritis, and rheumatism, and as a tea or gargle, it has properties that make it a likely valid remedy for colds, flu, sore throat, and laryngitis. Tea made out of the leaves of Goldenrod (called Blue Mountain Tea) has been used by herbalists in the Appalachians for many years to relieve exhaustion and fatigue.
Contraindications are few for Goldenrod, although those who are pregnant or have serious heart or kidney problems should steer clear. There are no known side effects either alone or with other drugs or herbs, but this has not been studied extensively. Minor allergic reactions could occur in some people.
Dosage is 2-3 cups of tea per day, or as often as needed if using it for gargling. The tea is actually rather tasty, with an anise-like taste and aroma. For external use, either crush the leaves and rub them on the skin, or visit the How to Make Herbal Oils & Ointments section of these pages. Again, some people may have a minor allergic reaction if rubbing crushed leaves or a preparation directly on the skin so proceed with appropriate caution.
The Clingers protect the Muthaship by watching out for attacks and use their tentacles to manage the ship's sulphur levels. His tongue is poking out because he is singing the Song of Conquest, which to human ears sounds like gargling toenails.
Disaster struck the second Hodge Opera House in winter 1928, when a fire which began in the adjoining Merchant's Gargling Oil factory spread to destroy both Lockport buildings. The ice-coated ruin had the look of a nightmarish wedding cake and became the subject of many photos which still survive. A wall of the building remained to become a wall of the Bewley Building, now on the site.
My mother said she watched the fire from Ruhlman Brothers Hardware Store where her fathe worked, but she was only a baby at the time, so she must have heard stories about watching it, it was probably not a real memory.

Fruit - raw or cooked. An acid flavor, it has been used as a substitute for lemon juice. The fruit is rather small and with very little flesh, but it is produced on fairly large panicles and so is easily harvested. When soaked for 10 - 30 minutes in hot or cold water it makes a very refreshing lemonade-like drink. The mixture should not be boiled since this will release tannic acids and make the drink astringent. Root - peeled and eaten raw. CAUTION: There are some suggestions that the sap of this species can cause a skin rash in susceptible people, but this has not been substantiated.
MEDICINAL USES: Alterative, Antiseptic, Appetizer, Astringent, Diuretic, Emetic, Emmenagogue, Febrifuge,
Galactogogue, Hemostatic, Ophthalmic, Refrigerant, Rubefacient, Salve, TB, Tonic,
Smooth sumac was employed medicinally by various native North American Indian tribes who used it to treat a variety of complaints. It is occasionally used in modern herbalism where it is valued for its astringent and antiseptic qualities. Some caution should be employed in the use of this species since it can possibly cause skin irritations. It is best only used under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. A tea made from the bark or root bark is alterative, antiseptic, astringent, galactogogue, hemostatic, rubefacient and tonic. It is used in the treatment of diarrhea, fevers, general debility, sore mouths, rectal bleeding, uterine prolapse etc.. It is used as a gargle to treat sore throats and applied externally to treat excessive vaginal discharge, burns and skin eruptions. The powdered bark can be applied as a poultice to old ulcers, it is a good antiseptic. A tea made from the roots is appetizer, astringent, diuretic and emetic. An infusion is used in the treatment of colds, sore throats, painful urination, retention of urine and dysentery. The root is harvested in the autumn and dried for later use. An infusion of the green or dried branches has been used in the treatment of TB. A decoction of the branches, with the seed heads, has been used to treat itchy scalps and as a bathing water for frost-bitten limbs. The milky latex from the plant has been used as a salve on sores. A tea made from the leaves was used in the treatment of asthma, diarrhea and stomatitis. A poultice of the leaves has been used to treat skin rashes. The leaves have been chewed to treat sore gums and they have been rubbed on the lips to treat sore lips. The berries are diuretic, emetic, emmenagogue, purgative and refrigerant. They are used in the treatment of late-onset diabetes, strangury bowel complaints, febrile diseases, dysmenorrhea etc.. They have been chewed as a remedy for bed-wetting. The blossoms have been chewed as a treatment for sore mouths. A decoction of the blossoms has been used as a mouthwash for teething children. An infusion of the blossoms has been used as an eye wash for sore eyes.

The leaves are rich in tannin, containing about 10 - 25%. Up to 31.2% has been obtained from some plants. They can be collected as they fall in the autumn and used as a brown dye or as a mordant. The twigs and root are also rich in tannin. A black and a red dye is obtained from the fruit. A black dye is obtained from the leaves, bark and roots. An orange or yellow dye is obtained from the roots harvested in spring. A light yellow dye is obtained from the pulp of the stems. The inner bark, mixed with bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) and the inner bark of wild plum (Prunus sp.) has been used to make a yellow dye. An oil is extracted from the seeds. It attains a tallow-like consistency on standing and is used to make candles. These burn brilliantly, though they emit a pungent smoke. The plant has an extensive root system and is fairly wind tolerant, though branches can be broken off in very strong winds. It is planted for soil stabilization and as a shelter screen. It can quickly establish itself in open sunny locations and so can be used as a pioneer species for establishing woodlands. Wood - soft, light, brittle.

A proper chocolate factory.
"An important industry in the town is Cadbury's chocolate factory. The J.S. Fry and Sons business merged with Cadbury in 1919, and moved their factory in the centre of Bristol to Keynsham in 1935. As Quakers, the factory was built in a 228-acre greenfield site with social facilities, including playing fields and recreational sports grounds. Called Somerdale after a national competition in 1923, Keynsham Cadbury is the home of Fry's Chocolate Cream, the Double Decker, Dairy Milk and Mini Eggs, Cadbury's Fudge, Chomp and most importantly, the Crunchie. According to Cadbury employees (or 'Chocolate Welders' as they are locally known), the Crunchie Machine makes enough bars to stretch to the Moon and back every week".

I found these on the ground, in the ‘wild’.
Berries are so autumnal, only very few are edible now, except for the birds and other animals.
A jelly made from them is popular for dressing game.
According to Robert James in 1747, the fruit is excellent for treating the scurvy, and the exudates from the bark is good for the diseases of the spleen.
When dried and powdered the berries have been turned into a type of bread, and in an infusion make an acidulous drink.
A gargle made from the berries is good for a sore throat and inflamed tonsils.
However, it is bitter – very bitter.
Sorbus is a genus of about 100–200 species of trees and shrubs in the rose family Rosaceae. Species of Sorbus are commonly known as white-beam, rowan, service tree and mountain-ash.
This upright, tree is the most compact of the Rowan trees making it ideal for small gardens.
Fluffy, white corymbs of flowers appear in April-May that are popular with bees.
Mid/dark green pinnate foliage turns vibrant shades of orange and red in the autumn which complements the reddish orange berries that hang in heavy clusters and are a treat for the birds.
Popular folklore maintains that a heavy crop of fruit means a hard or difficult winter.
Similarly, in Finland and Sweden, the number of fruit on the trees was used as a predictor of the snow cover during winter.
However, as fruit production for a given summer is related to weather conditions the previous summer, with warm, dry summers increasing the amount of stored sugars available for subsequent flower and fruit production, it has no predictive relationship to the weather of the next winter.

Notre-Dame de Reims (Our Lady of Rheims) is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Reims, where the kings of France were once crowned.]It replaces an older church, destroyed by a fire in 1211, which was built on the site of the basilica where Clovis was baptized by Saint Remi, bishop of Reims, in AD 496. That original structure had been erected on the site of the Roman baths. As the cathedral it remains the seat of the Archdiocese of Reims.

The Postcard
An early view of the Market Place on a postcard published by Henri Georges of Brussels.
The card was posted in Bruges on Thursday the 27th. June 1922 to an address in King Edwards Avenue, Broadstairs. What the recipient read over 90 years ago was as follows:
"Thank you so much dear old
Sis for your card - yours was
the only birthday greeting that
reached me yesterday, and it
arrived just before leaving
Antwerp for here.
I liked Brussels immensely -
the air is so good too.
Bruges is very beautiful I think -
but the weather is horrible,
and I did want to get some
snapshots.
I borrowed V's camera.
I wish you had better news
of yourself to tell me.

The Belfry
The Belfry, which is on the south side of the Grote Markt (Big Market Square), was built in the 13th. Century. It houses a carillon of 47 bells which are rung by a full-time carilloneur who gives free concerts on a regular basis. (When you think about it, they'd have to be free, wouldn't they?)
The Statue
The statue on the tall plinth commemorates Jan Breydel, a butcher born in Bruges, and Pieter de Coninck, a weaver.
In May 1302 they led the Bruges Matins (Brugse Metten), a violent uprising against Philip the Fair. (He couldn't have been that fair, or the plinth would have had a statue of him on it, rather than them!)
Peter Bayliss
So what else happened on the day that Bob posted the card?
Well, the 27th. June 1922 marked the birth in Kingston-upon-Thames of Peter Bayliss. Peter was an English actor who trained at the Italia Conti Academy and at the John Gielgud Company.
More than six feet tall, with a voice to match, he supplemented it with a barrage of wheezings, croakings, mutterings and, as the opera singer in 'Frontiers of Farce' (Old Vic, 1977), garglings.
In 1956 Peter appeared on stage in 'The Matchmaker' at the Royale Theatre in New York, and in 1960 he appeared in 'Ross' at the Royal Haymarket Theatre in London.
His 20 films ranged from 'The Red Shoes' (1948) to 'Darling' (1965). He acted in more than 40 television productions including 'Please Sir!', 'The Sweeney', 'Coronation Street', 'Lovejoy' and 'The Bill', plus dramas like 'Bye, Bye Columbus' (1990), 'Merlin' (1998) and 'The Arabian Nights' (1999).
On radio he was particularly good in Jacobean adaptations, playing characters with names such as Sir Moth-Interest and Walter Whorehound. He appeared in more than 100 theatre productions.

Taken with 8x10 Kodak 2D and 11" Darlot Petzval. Eke IR820, developed in Rodinal 1+50. Accidentally underdeveloped by 30%, but it's okay dark; there's a touch of natural vignetting in the corners at this length. No post-processing.

Herb Robert - Geranium robertianum
Herb robert is a native member of the hardy geranium family. It is found growing throughout the British Isles and favours shaded habitats such as woods, hedgerows, banks, coastal shingle and rocky places. It is shallow rooted and the pink flowers, although self-pollinated are visited by hoverflies. It can be allowed to grow to brighten shady areas.
It is common and widespread throughout Britain and Ireland, often growing in the shade of woodland edges, next to walls and in other darker spots. When it grows in rocky, sunny sites the sunshine turns its stems a crimson red.
Herb-robert was traditionally used as an antiseptic, as well as to treat stomach upset and nosebleeds.
Its leaves are edible and used by some to make tea. They have also been used crushed and rubbed on the skin as an insect repellent, exuding a pungent smell.
Herb Robert is plant with an unpleasant odour, so it is sometimes called "Stinky Bob." The leaves, stems, and flowers are used to make medicine.
Herb Robert was traditionally carried to bring good luck and for fertility.
Herb Robert is thought to have gained its name from an ancient association with Robin Goodfellow, a house goblin from English folklore also known as Puck. However others think it was named after an 11th-century monk who cured many people using the plant.
Herb Robert is used for diarrhea, to improve functioning of the liver and gallbladder, to reduce swelling (inflammation) of the kidney, bladder, and gallbladder, and to prevent the formation of stones in the kidney, bladder, or gallbladder. It is also used for "the flu", headaches, diabetes, sinus problems, arthritis, sciatica, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and cancer.
Some people use Herb Robert as a mouthwash or gargle. The fresh leaves are chewed to relieve sore mouth and throat. It is also applied to the skin for mosquito bites, parasites, herpes, arthritis, and sciatica.
An extract of Herb Robert may slow the proliferation of bacteria and viruses.

I strongly dislike the people above us. They wear high heels all the time, and it sounded like a herd of baby ponies upstairs last night starting around 11... and it didn't stop until at least 3:30 am if not later. I woke up not only to them stomping about, but an excruciatingly painful sore throat that felt like I was swallowing needles. So, I slept awesome. I didn't go to the health center, although I should have, because despite gargling salt water, taking ibuprofen, eating a DQ blizzard, and getting sore throat things, it still hurts. Boooo. I'm also wearing a sweatshirt, my track jacket, wool socks, and have a blanket on. *fingers crossed* it isn't strep. :'(
In more exciting news, the website I designed for our student fan club has started getting google keyword hits... so that's exciting. It almost has 100 unique views for not even two weeks, so I feel pretty good about that. :)
1917 postmarked postcard view of the C. & E. (Chicago & Erie) Railroad Depot and milk station at Winfield, Indiana. This route bypassed Crown Point, but not Winfield. It ran from Chicago to Ohio via Rochester, Huntington and Decatur. Steve Shook and others provided information regarding the location of this view. It was midway between Crown Point and Lake of the Four Seasons. The photographer was looking west from Decatur Street just a few hundred feet south of East 117th Avenue. Of course, the rails and the structures are now gone.
The milk station was the small, elevated wooden structure standing beside the tracks. Eighteen milk cans were sitting in the foreground and two guys were sitting on the cow catcher of the locomotive. The guy on the right appears to be eating something from a paper bag.
A pair of advertising posters hung on the front of the depot and another pair was posted on this east end of the building. It is unclear what the GRANDMA USED sign was advertising. Maybe it was related to the PISO TABLETS advertisement. The tablets were a patent medicine product of the Piso Company. The company was founded in Warren, Pennsylvania, in 1894. They marketed the tablets for many ailments, but this ad was for SORE THROAT in particular. The tablets were dissolved in water for gargling. A barrel, two buckets and an extension ladder were on the ground below those advertisements.
