In November 1987 a Chicago's PBS television station had its broadcast signal hijacked for about a minute and a half (another broadcast intrusion occurred a few hours earlier during a local news broadcast on another channel, but was brief and without audio). The hijacker wore a Max Headroom mask, spoofing the 80s icon and the popular New Coke commercials that the character featured in at the time. The hijack occurred during a broadcast of Doctor Who, which resulted in it being widely recorded by the show's cult fanbase.
Most of what the hijacker said seems pretty random and silly at first inspection, but with a little analysis and context (the hijack is rife with 1980s pop culture references) one could conclude that simple mischief was not the hijacker's only goal, and there is some attempt at social commentary.
Neither the hijacker nor any accomplices were ever caught.
This piece is a simple trace over a still of the video clip (which can be found on FuzzyMemories.TV), with colour and additional details added in later.
New Years Eve 07 - dancing, bonfire, sea and champagne (The state of the photo pretty much sums it up.)
