Postmark on the back of this postcard: Worcester, Mass., Oct. 30, 1909.
Addressed to: Miss Ora Bickford, New Gloucester, Maine, R.F.D. no. 1.
Message: "With best wishes for a happy Hallowe'en. Love, Elva."
"A formerly widespread tradition held that young women gazing into a mirror in a darkened room (often on Halloween) could catch a glimpse of their future husband's face in the mirror--or a skull personifying Death if their fate was to die before they married." This explanation of what the women in this postcard is doing appears in Wikipedia's article on scrying, which is defined as "the practice of looking into a translucent ball or other material with the belief that things can be seen, such as spiritual visions, and less often for purposes of divination or fortune-telling."
Cupid's presence in this postcard is somewhat puzzling, but the publisher, L. R. Conwell, also included Cupid in at least one other Halloween postcard. See The Joys of Halloween Be Yours.

See below for additional examples of early twentieth-century postcards that depict mirror-gazing and other Halloween fortune-telling activities: Hallow'een Greeting, Halloween Greetings, Halloween Games at Midnight, and May This Be Your Luck on Halloween.
A Halloween postcard addressed on the other side to "Miss Bertha Duncan, Cresson, Penna.," and postmarked in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on October 24, 1912.
Handwritten message: "This card is a little soon for Halloween but I will send it anyhow. Aquilla."
Printed on the back: "Printed in Saxony 0624."
In a candlelit room at midnight on Halloween, a young woman gazes into a mirror through the steam from a cauldron so she can catch a glimpse of her future husband.
For other Halloween postcards with a mirror-gazing theme, see:
-- Halloween Greeting—I Gaze in the Mirror My Future There to See
"O, is my true love tall and grand? O, is my sweetheart bonny?"
Mirrors, cakes, apple peels, and chestnuts have all figured in the Halloween fortune-telling games depicted on early twentieth-century postcards. So I guess I shouldn't have been surprised when I found this postcard by Ellen H. Clapsaddle, which suggests that young women could use cabbages (or kales) to foretell what kind of husband–tall and grand? bonny?–they might marry.
In a discussion about Pumpkins and Postcards and Portents–Oh My!, Mikaela Taylor of Middlebury College explains how picking a cabbage from the garden could predict a woman's romantic future: "If the selected cabbage or kale was difficult to unearth, it denoted difficulty in a relationship. Kale with clumps of dirt stuck to the roots signified a rich husband, and the size, shape, and taste of the kale foretold the physical attributes and personality of a future spouse."
Ellen Clapsaddle illustrated a number of other prognosticating postcards like this one. For another example, see Halloween Chestnuts—Uncertainly, Hope, Despair, Happy Ever After.
A real photo postcard addressed on the other side to Miss Lizzie Moyer, Frackville, Pa., and postmarked in Selinsgrove and Frackville, Pa., during December 1905.
Handwritten message: "I suppose you will know one among the crowd, Lily Row."
The presence of the two jack-o'-lanterns in front of the group suggests that the photo was taken during a Halloween party. In front of the jack-o'-lanterns are ears of corn wrapped in paper or cloth. There's also another pumpkin in the lower left-hand corner of the photo, but this one hasn't been carved into a jack-o'-lantern. Instead, the letters of the alphabet have been stenciled on the pumpkin (see a cropped version of the photo for a better view of the details).
I haven't figured out how the partygoers used the ears of corn, but I was able to determine what they did with the stenciled pumpkin. A fortune-telling game listed in a book of Games for Hallow-e'en (Barse and Hopkins, 1912), by Mary E. Blain, p. 21, provides an explanation:
Pumpkin Alphabet
Carve [or stencil, in this case] all the letters of the alphabet on a medium sized pumpkin. Put it on a dish and set on a stand or table. Each guest in turn is blindfolded and given a hat-pin, then led to pumpkin, where he (she) is expected to stick pin into one of the letters on the pumpkin, thus indicating the initial of future life-partner.
Perhaps the wrapped corn was used in a party game, too.
A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of trick or treat (go crazy with this one and post as many photos as you want--no limit! Halloween, costumes, masks, skeletons, devils, human monsters, things that go bump in the night, ghostly apparitions, or anything you find scary or creepy).
Postmarked South Amboy, N.J., Oct. 8, 1909, and addressed to Miss E. E. Isenberg, R.F.D. No. 1, Box 17, Hollidaysburg, Pa.
Handwritten message: "South Amboy, Oct. 8th. Dear Elda, We were all to New York yesterday. Had a nice time, went to the Hippodrome, the day was fine. I looked about plume [feathers for hats; see plume hunting]--you can do better in Altoona. Do not forget to meet me at Frankstown on Monday eve at [the] five [o'clock] train. You can come in buggy. Mama."
In this Halloween postcard by illustrator Bernhardt Wall, a young woman is tossing a long apple peel over her shoulder, believing that the peel will fall to the floor in the shape of a letter that will reveal the first letter of her future husband's name (strangely, a number of peels that spell "Hallowe'en" are floating in the background). This apple peeling practice is one of a number of Halloween games and rituals that were depicted on postcards published in the early twentieth century.
Hallow'een Greeting
When I gaze in the mirror
My future there to see,
I wish that I could see you there,
How happy I would be!
This is the season the maidens dream
Things of future unforeseen.
Dream sweet dreams, oh! ladies fair;
But of the future have a care!
A postcard addressed on the other side to my grandmother, "Miss Annie Sturtz, Fairhope Boswell, Pa." (I'm not exactly certain where my grandmother lived at the time and why Fairhope was crossed out and Boswell written in). There are two postmarks--one from Somerset, Pa., and another from Fairhope, Pa.--both dated Oct. 29, 1908.
The handwritten message on the back of the card is "Annie taking warning. B." My grandmother evidently didn't heed the warning from the unnamed "B." and married my grandfather a year later.
I always get this written on my cups. once, I got a frappuccino and some guy wrote it in caramel. Was awesome
Notice how the letters of the alphabet are stenciled on the pumpkin that's visible in the lower left-hand corner of the photo. For more information, see the full version of this real photo postcard.
A Halloween postcard mailed in Pawtucket, R.I., on October 24, 1909. The handwritten message and address on the other side are smudged and not readable.
Printed on the other side: "Halloween Series No. 2."
Halloween Precautions.
If at midnight with a pumpkin light
You steal to your room unseen
In the mirror appears the face,
Of your lover true, on Halloween
I was in love with the pretty blonde girl even then, at 14 (I may have still been 13 when this was taken).
Back in the day, school photographers put the tall guys at the back in the middle, the shorter guys on the end. If you were really short, they put you on the end of the middle' row with the plain Janes -- note the gender symmetry.
Middle of the front row was always reserved for the prettiest girls.
[Hard to know if the photographer was actually conscious of his compositional rules, or rather this was "just the way it's done.]"
Still, after many years of dogged perseverance, she married me.

So today was saturday!!! Yay :) oh yeah, I had to get up at 7 :P
But it was all ok because Mrs. Wood was making a delicious breakfast that smelled AMAZING. French toast with bagels with fried potato bits with cereal with waffles.... Mmmmmm I grabbed a slice of French toast with hash browns than ran out the door. I had on my grey sweatshirt shirtsleeve American Eagle thing on today with brown booty shorts and I liked it alot :) Dance was actually pretty fun. There were chocolate chip muffins that were awesome and there was lots and lots of fruit. We were taught the closer dance by Kelsey Frobos again! (she choreographed closer of Southside dance company Spring Show last semester) it was to another Coldplay song about "In The City" and her choreography is still originally awesome and pretty. After that we went to different dance stations and practiced over and over again. I ate many carrots and started catching them in my mouth from up high, like my mom taught me in 3rd grade. Kayla McGee surprised us and showed to dance day! I missed her smile so much :) during some of the dance stations where I wasn't in any, I sat with Ellen in the the seats and she told mr about the dramas going on in her life. Long story short, it's "Grey's Anatomy" story of "Pick me, Choose me, Love me". He can eaither pick the nice girl he's talked to for months now (Ellen/Grey) or he can choose the woman who sleeps around and is suddenly always around him and even knows about the other relationship and doesn't care about effing it up (Thisotherhobag/Addison) Hopefully this guy knows his Grey's Anatomy and also knows that he'll regret picking the HoBag.
After that whole story, we practiced Black & Gold and I FINALLY had a good turning day! (At least in the practice I did) I hit the Double Piroette to Seconde, Seconde,Seconde, Attitude, Seconde, Seconde, quick Double coupé to jump out. I felt like an effing ice skater. Of course we practiced it so much I got tired and screwed it up on stage, but I at least did it once!!! :D When Frankie was practicing the lift things in her dance later on, I was watching them out of exaughstion and we (girls in the dance, Brooke, Mme) were all talking about how teachers have lives side out school, but in class like they have to say "Grape Juice" as a code word for drinking. I said he immpecably brilliant comment "I love grape juice!, my favorite's apple!"
brilliant.
I got the turns figured out in Falling Slowly Trio and stuck a triple during the run through! It was the first time anyone has ever clapped for my turns onstage. (SUCESS) I'm not sure Ive really said what the back story is but I'll tell it another day I promise :) it's a story that's very near and dear to my heart, same goes for my solo.
I effed up my solo though :(
I can't seem to remember the steps to it after the first riff! Whatever, I'll figure it out before show.
I feel like I've improved so much as dancer in the past year, I also feel like it's much much easier to come up with original choreography now that I've been doing it for about a year. Speaking of choreography, Charlotte (English name - Caroline) a.k.a the awesome cheerleader who's in my French class that we all wanted to join dance company who saw my vampire dance in practice last semester, came up to me and had this idea to start a dance on pointe, with some fluff music, then BAM. Hip hop :) I must say I like the idea but I hope I can come up with good choreography. Once I hear the "right" song then it'll all work out. I also have this crazy swing dance idea to "Candyman" but Christina Aguleria.
Anywaysss, so I fishished dance practice and got picked up to goback to kerbys house, sleep for 2.2 seconds, then go back up to church. They were serving chick-fil-a sandwhiches soi could only eat the chips and brownie :/ but lauren's car stopped at starbucks and picked me up a Tazo Passion tea because they are AMAZING. I talked to some of the other girls more and got to know them better. During my small groups free time, when I was at dance, they helped feed the homeless and clean a shelter, I wish I could have been there to do that awesome work. While some groups were getting headshots or playing lazertag, we were feeding homeless. I really do have the best small group ever.
Then it was time for the after dinner service and I sat in between Lindsay and Kerby. Lindsay has a beastly camera BTW and takes these creative picures with light manipulations. I tried to convince her to come to photography club. I hope more people like her come, the kind of people that don't use it as an identity or a way to "prove" themselves but just take pictures because they enjoy it and what you can do with a camera. It's that simple.
The Fee band (pictured above) was amazing as usual and rocked it. Then Ben Crawshaw came out and talked more about sex.
He came on with these two signs. One said TODAY and one said MARRAIGE. He said "regardless of your past, your mistakes, your slip ups. I want you to see the whole picture. He fact that when you marry that someone someday, you'll want to give them the most of you you can. You want to be able to tell them 'i knew you before I even met you and I want you to know I saved all of myself for you' and if you have made a couple slip ups say 'hey 1 is better than 5' '5 is better than 10' '10 is better than 20' and so on and so forth as far as you need to go. I know you might be saying 'Ben, it's too late for me, I only get one virginity, once it's gone it's gone' true you only get one virginity, sex is still powerful after you've had it.... When you look at me and think 'i can't do it' I want you to look at yourself. Look where you are sitting. You are in the present moment right now. everything you do from this. Moment. On. Is your choice. You can choose to continue living the way you're living or you can stop, and make a change within yourself for a better outcome in the end. "
His wife Holly, who works with my mom in the morning services, was shown in an Interview video about sex and she made up the great point about "if you feel like you have crossed that line and can't change anything, I want you to turn around and sprint in the other direction. "
The last part of the service was a video of this Musician and this girl that went to MY life weekend as a sophmore and they talked about sex that weekend at mylife (then it was called Walkin Wisely Weekend) and she write this letter to her future spouse. From there she just kept writing and writing all of these letters and journals to the man she was going to marry. Sh might have not known his face or had even met him yet, but she was always thinking and praying about him. She met her futurehusband when he was playing at the Vinyl one night in Atlanta, they dated, then got engaged. They bothe waited till marriage on the wedding day she gave him all these letters written to him over the years and a inside a little box was her purity ring on a ribbion for him saying, "I've always known you, even when I did no know you, and I have saved all of myself for you" it was SO SWEET...!
After the talk, they had people clear out the chairs in the center and I swear, it became a religious rave :) I stood next to Kerby and sang my lungs out for hours. Sure it smelled like BO and there were these super tall guys in front of use, but honestly we didn't really even care. We were singing our souls out and getting swept away with everyone else :) (even while singin harmony.....Kerby;)
When we all got back to our host home we talked about saving ourselves for marrig and I have to say, before It wasn't a big deal to me to save myself for marrige, but sex in high school or any uncommited reletionship is a waste. But now I really want to save myself. Not because I want to reamain "pure" bu if I find someone that also waits, it becomes so much less about sex and so much more about another person that so closely reflects the same morals and standards as you.
We then had to write a letter to our future Spouse. I wrote maybe 1 sentance then thought the most natural thing would be to type it on my iPhone :) I want to keep it somewhere special where I know it will be read, so I assumed - why not here? So here goes nothing.
To my future spouse.
So I decided if I was going to write this letter I might as well do it the way that's most natural to me. Typing on my phone :) by the way, I'm addicted to the sideways smiley faces, but you probably already knew that. I don't really know what to say. I hope that whatever point your life is at right now, that you're at least happy with it. I want you to know that regardless of the fact that I don't know your name, face, or age - I'm always praying for you. I'm ecstatic knowing that I will eventually get to solve the great mystery of your identity someday. But I hope you know that I'm in no rush to live my life to the fullest. So I hope you're ready to sit back for a while during my many adventures around the world (I hope! Fingers crossed)
So being a teenager I'll tell you a little about my life. I've had some iffy complicated relationships, but I haven't had a steady one yet. I've kissed before, I love dance, photography, and singing. Well you should know the photography thing - you're probably reading this from my 365. I go to Lambert High School - Class of 2012. ( I wonder what high school you go to...... Anyways :) I have a fairly good amount of self confidence in performing arts, photography, and AP world history essays, but besides those 3 things, my self confidence is zilch. I am daily reminded for every thing I'm good at, one of my friends is great at it. Which is one good thing about my friends. They are your goals to strive towards and also examples of how not to be. thought talking about friends, I don't like people to but in to my romantic life. I'm not really a touchy feely, romantic kind of girl. I see "relationship" and warning bells go off in my head because of my past experiences (not going there in an open-to-public journal, sorry) I just want you to know I can't wait to see the person in my head be a reall, living, breathing person standing in front of me. I guess I love you :), -tay

Rebeccah sent us a group of pictures she took at the Backyardigans, which Josie still can not get over. She loved it all the way. She honestly had this expression on her face the whole show.
as you can see by the label, Matt is an old-fashioned sheet ghost. Although you can't see it in this image, he is wearing a bowler hat.
At midnight on Halloween, walk backwards down the cellar steps with only a candle for light. Look into a mirror, and you'll catch a glimpse of your future husband!!! Or at least that's what postcards like this would have us believe.
Another copy of this card offered for sale online was postmarked in 1928. For another postcard in the same series, see Halloween Greeting — Don't Go Out Alone.
For another Halloween postcard with a mirror-gazing theme, see Halloween Greetings — What's Meant for Thee, Thee'll Have.
My Hallowe'en Greeting
Let this design on you prevail
To try the trick, (it cannot fail.)
Back down the stairs with candle dim
And in the mirror you'll see HIM!
Matt's ghost costume was hot, so he wrapped it around himself and wore his bowler. People thought he was a mohel.
3rd time seeing him, 2nd concert of his that I've been to at Madison Square Garden. I was the the front of the middle of the crowd against the rail when he sang 'Hero,' which is where this photo was taken, no zoom.
I'm going to marry him one day. But for now my goal is to see if I can get a press pass to his next show, we'll see how well that will go. xo
