A sci-fi spectacular lit up the night sky as part of the Birmingham International Dance Festival. The Future Cargo event saw dancers performing in the city's Centenary Square inside an articulated lorry trailer. Future Cargo is the latest outdoor work by Frauke Requard, a German-born, London-based choreographer, and David Rosenberg.
This is the brand new Bristol Digital Futures Institute, an outpost of Bristol University. Both "digital" and "future" have become become vague buzzwords that can be attached to almost anything but I was nevertheless relieved to find that this is not the home of the rebranded Department of Computer Science.
In fact, the Institute aims to "build better digital futures for all" and has an impressive list of corporate backers. Cynics will of course suggest that these backers are only in it to burnish their public images and the moment the Institute suggests anything that threatens their bottom lines (not automating people into redundancy, not harvesting personal information for nefarious ends, scaling back on surveillance, exercising caution with AI etc etc) you won't see them for dust.
I like the arrows pointing the way to the car park – in case you can't work it out for yourself – and the trees imprisoned in pots, presumably to prevent them running away.
