Clifden - Irish: An Clochán, meaning "stepping stones" is a coastal town in County Galway, Ireland, in the region of Connemara, located on the Owenglin River where it flows into Clifden Bay. As the largest town in the region, it is often referred to as "the Capital of Connemara". Frequented by tourists, Clifden is linked to Galway city by the N59.
The foundation for this beautiful Church was laid in 1872 and was completed seven years later. It was dedicated in July 1879 by Archbishop Mc Hale. This was a considerable achievement considering the poverty of the people who were emerging from famine periods, and also the courage of Dean Mc Manus who undertook this task in his late 70’s.
During his 34 years 1898—1932 Canon Mc Alpine did much to furnish and beautify the Church. In 1898 the Church Spire was completed standing at a height of 150 feet. In 1900 the bell was erected and first rung on St. Patrick’s Day. In 1901 the beautiful Joshua Clarke stained glass windows were installed.
St Mary the Virgin Church
Great Warley
BRENTWOOD
Essex CM13 3JP
There were two previous churches in Great Warley, one that served from 1247 – 1892. The other, a wooden building built in 1892 in the grounds of Rector Hammond Bailey. On his death it was bequeathed to the parish of Basildon in Yorkshire.
Evelyn and Emily Heseltine donated land and money in 1902 and this new church was built. The design and furnishing were placed under the jurisdiction of architect Mr. C. Harrison Townsend and Sculptor Sir William Reynolds-Stevens. Their joint brief was to build a church in the Art Nouveau style. It is said to be the best of the three remaining Art Nouveau churches in England. It is a wonderful church to visit and when you see the materials used to decorate the interior you would understand why. Brass, Copper, Marble, Mother-of-Pearl, Embroidery, different types of wood and one of the best stained glass window displays to be seen in a small church. It is called locally ‘The Pearly Church’.
There is much more to write about but It will show it the photographs that I post. Further information: The frames that I’ve used have been created from small decorations inside the church.
The Reredos
The figure of Christ is in oxidized silver on copper with a mother-of-pearl background. It has gilt metal panels at the sides with groups of brass trees and coloured marbles. (These Details were taken from Pevsner Essex).
The Pulpit and Lectern match with each other. Both have mother-of pearl squares set into brass, they both sit on black marble plinths and have castellated decoration.
Altar fronts – There are various frontals or altar cloths. Embroidered, green with blessing hand (circa 1870)
Gold centred cross and Lilies (circa 1900)
Grapes and Foliage on cream silk (Circa 1910)
Maroon Grape bunches and green Leaves (Circa 1900). This piece conserved by the National Lottery Fund
The Chapel window was dedicated to Evelyn Heseltine. There are three beautiful panels and were designed by Edward Burne-Jones the famous Pre-Raphaelite artist and manufactured by Morris & co in the early 1930’s.
There are three windows designed by Lawrence Lee. Some of the windows were damaged by bombing during the war and were replaced in the 1950’s (Powell and Sons)

The picture shows tower no. 31 of the Prussian semaphore system located in Entrup near Nieheim in Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany. The Prussian Semaphore System was a telegraphic communications system used between Berlin and the Rhine Province from 1832 to 1849. It could transmit administrative and military messages by optical signal over a distance of nearly 550 kilometres (340 mi). The telegraph line comprised 62 stations each furnished with a signal mast with six cable-operated arms. The stations were equipped with telescopes that operators used to copy coded messages and forward them to the next station. Although electric telegraphy made the system obsolete for military use, simplified semaphores were still used for railway signals. (see Wikipedia)

A hooded beach chair at the beach of Langholz by the Baltic Sea, Waabs, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
Some background information:
Strandkörbe (in English: "hooded beach chairs") are special hooded windbreak seating pieces of furniture used at vacation and seaside resorts, constructed from wicker, wood panels and canvas. They are designed for two people and provide comfort seating and shelter from wind, rain, sand gusts and sunburn on beach seafront resorts. Strandkörbe are mainly found at nearly all beach seafront resorts of the North Sea and Baltic Sea in the German states of Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. But they have also become an export hit and hence, are exported from Germany all over the world.
The Strandkorb was invented in 1882 by the German basket maker Wilhelm Bartelmann in Rostock, originally for his customer Elfriede Maltzahn, who suffered from rheumatism. Bartelmann's hooded beach chair caused such great sensation among other beach-visitors, who also wanted to sit comfortably at the beach, that the demand for his "Strandkorb" soared. The first prototype models were single seaters and appeared quickly on other parts of the German coast. A year later Bartelmann also developed a two-seater version. As from 1910, the German standard Strandkorb is a two-seater, whose design and construction has changed little since then.
Waabs is a municipality in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany’s northernmost federal state. It is located about 10 km (6.2 miles) northeast of the town of Eckernförde on the northern shore of the Eckernförde Bay on the Schwansen peninsula, surrounding Lake Aassee. Waabs has nearly 1,500 residents and is also situated approximately 30 km (18.6 miles) to the north of the city of Kiel, the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein.
Statistically, Waabs consists of the three villages Kleinwaabs, Großwaabs and Langholz, but it also includes a number of smaller settlements and estates, such as Aschenberg, Booknis, Hökholz, Hülsenhain, Karlsminde, Lehmberg, Ludwigsburg and Sophienhof. Waabs has a long history of settlement, which is indicated by numerous prehistoric burial mounds within the municipality.
In 1382, Waabs was first mentioned in a document as "Grøten Wopensee". However, Waabs‘ parish church of St. Mary’s was already mentioned in 1352. Besides, it is historically verified that the church even had a predecessor building dating from the 12th century. In the course of time, the name of the village changed to "Wapenisse" (1462), "Wapendsee" (1481) and "Waabskirch" (1641), until the community finally became Waabs.
The name is a combination of the Old Danish "wāpæn" meaning "weapon" or "coat of arms", and the Old Danish "næs" meaning "headland", although it is unclear in which sense "wāpæn" was used. In 1928, the six estate districts of Hökholz, Karlsminde, Ludwigsburg, Sophienhof, Waabs, and Waabshof were merged to form the present-day municipality of Waabs.
Ludwigsburg Estate is located in the municipal area of Waabs. Its manor house lies within a moat system, as it was built on the foundations of a medieval water castle. It is said to have been a feudal holding of the bishopric in the Middle Ages, with a manor and a village, but it was first mentioned in 1396 as a knightly possession. In the 18th century it was owned by Count Friedrich Ludwig von Dehn, the appointed governor of Schleswig-Holstein.
The present baroque manor house and its gardens were built in the early 18th century for Ludwig von Dehn, who also renamed the estate Ludwigsburg. Particularly noteworthy is the "Bunte Kammer" (in English: "Colorful Chamber") with its baroque interior decoration. Today, rooms in the manor house, such as the Golden Hall and the vaulted cellar, can be rented for weddings and other celebrations. Furthermore, the estate includes a riding stable, where Trakehners, Arabians, Holsteiners, and German Riding Ponies are bred.
Eckernförde Bay (in German: "Eckernförder Bucht") is a firth and a branch of the Bay of Kiel between the Danish Wahld peninsula in the south and the Schwansen peninsula in the north in the Baltic Sea off the lands of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The bay extends around 17 km (11 miles) deep into the land and is 10 km (6.2 miles) wide at its entrance where Booknis-Eck (municipality of Waabs) and Danish-Nienhof (municipality of Schwedeneck) mark the endpoints. At the inner end of the bay lies the town of Eckernförde.
The shores of the bay are shaped by the tides and the surf as during high winds from the northeast and southwest, heavy sea might build up. When the water level is 0.75 m (2.5 feet) higher than usual, sand and gravel is being eroded from the cliff coast. In some places, the coastline recedes 15 to 20 cm (5.9 to 7.9 inch) every year. As a result, the hills of the terminal moraines, that had formed during the last Ice Age in the southeast are hollowed out and a 30 m (98 feet) high and 3.6 km (2.2 miles) long cliff has formed. The steadily eroded material is partly deposited further west and several sand banks, which are mainly forested with deciduous trees, sometimes run parallel to the beaches.
