Something we don't do here in Brisbane as most of our trees are perennial.

My son and daughter ( with her 10 week old baby) manned a wheel of fortune booth at a benefit (circus for kids) for the local preschool association. Their dental office likes to take part in the community when ever they can. Erin (mom) takes her daughter (Trinity) to work with her for this event.

Yu: The Golden Dragon of China

a dragon board game designed by Julie Herberger-Dittrich

Children and adults alike are often fascinated by dragons. Here in Europe there are myths about brave iron clad knights who sleigh giant, flying, fire spitting dragons to free treasures which often lay waiting in a high castle tower along with a beautiful princess. Symbols of greed and danger linger around these horrible beasts, but what about Asian dragons, which are often seen with a ball in their talons and with steam in their noses? They look more like flying serpents without wings than in comparison to our image of, for example, Puff the Magic Dragon, who looks like a cute dinosaur with little bat wings. One thing which both dragons have got in common though is that they both live by the sea! The Asian dragon does not hoard his treasure; rather, he seeks and finds his luck which is symbolized by a golden yellow or red ball. Asian myth teaches that a dragon is to be respected and only then may one perhaps receive the luck which a dragon can bring.

If you would like to try your luck with dragons in English class, then just play my version of snakes and ladders, but you may call it Dragons and Lightning Bolts! The Rules are: First, have your class create English related question and answer cards. Second, have the class divide into groups of 4, and the teacher should give each player little figure seen in the illustration. The figures all have hats on: 1.The Light Man, 2.The Horn Man, 3.The Crown Man, or 4.The Starlight Man. If this is too much preparation than just give everyone a coin. Third, each player rolls a die, moves ahead and answers a question. If answered correctly than the player gets a point, but if wrong a point must be deducted. Fourth, beware of landing on the dangerous dragon tails, they make you slide down the board, but on the other hand, a lightning bolt will help you fly up the board! Fifth, the game ends when a character reaches the lucky gem stone, and the winner of the game is the character with the most points!

I have translated and shorted an interesting story about an Asian dragon myth which I found in the German book, Einhorn, Drache, Meerjungfrau: Wundersame Geschichten aus aller Welt by Margaret Mayo und Jane Ray.

The story begins as all myths usually do; long, long, ago….. there was a massive and destructive flood brought upon the people of China by the most powerful God in heaven, the Yellow King. He wanted to punish mankind for all of its evils by letting the rain flow relentlessly. The grandson of the king, named Kun, took pity on the poor suffering folk and animal kingdom on earth and begged his grandfather to end the flood. The Yellow King had no intention of ending what he began and simply refused to stop the rain. Kun was clueless as to how he could help the situation, until he noticed an old black turtle sitting in the Yellow King’s chamber. The turtle secretly gave him a clue by telling him to go to the Yellow King’s treasure trove where he would find an urn full of magic mud! Kun snuck off and quietly took a large handful of magic mud. He sprinkled it over the flood lands and like magic it began to foam and form islands and large bridges of land. The people and animals began to have hope and slowly crept out from their mountainous hiding places.

Kun knew that this act of good fortune would make the Yellow King very angry, so he turned himself into a fast white horse and attempted to flee. Enraged, the Yellow King sent the Fire God after Kun to kill him with a. thunderous lightning bolt. Amazingly though, a new life sprang from the stomach of the lifeless horse in the form of a golden dragon. He was the son of Kun, who called himself Yu, and had come to finish the work of his caring father. Respectfully, the golden dragon, Yu, went to the Yellow King to beg his permission to stop the rain. Upon his request, the King granted Yu his wish and even pronounced that Yu, the golden dragon, would be the new Rain God! Yu graciously accepted and went right to work, flying about and blowing all of the heavy rain clouds in the sky away with powerful puffs of steam from his nose.

Of course the old black turtle reappeared, laden with a load of magic mud which he and Yu eagerly spread around the water to make more land. The land which they formed is now known as China. Yu used his giant strong tail to whip and rip open the freshly formed earth in order to create gorges where rivers, like the famous Yellow River of China, could flow through the vast landscape and eventually run out to sea. The survivors of that time revered Yu as a king and till this day people go to the giant gorge along the Yellow River to pay tribute to the golden dragon for his efforts in saving mankind from the catastrophic flood.

Legend has it that in every body of water throughout China, there lives a dragon that is a descendent of Yu! Every year when the fish swim upstream to spawn, a dragon is born. During the winter months the dragons lay dormant, but when spring appears they shoot out of the water to dance and frolic with one another, which often can cause quite a storm complete with lightning and thunder! During the summer months they seek their luck and hunt for treasures which they often hide under their bearded chins or in their mouths. When the autumn leave blow, the dragons become lazy and float back down to earth once again. They take their places under the water or perhaps alongside the sea and fall into a deep slumber to regain energy for the next time they awake. This is the life cycle of a dragon, which never gives up searching for its luck year after year.
