MORNING HAS BROKEN – CAT STEVENS

Spring ballet gives way to Summer ball

senses filled; bees humming it all

only good can come of this

gently breezing; softest kiss

lightest step towards a new day

emotions high can fly away

butterflies and buttercups

daisies come and fill me up

with all the sweetest memories

laying beneath the swaying trees

canopies that fill my eyes

with shades of green and bluest skies

reflected like a tender rill

of freshest water; calm and still

my soul at one with all around me

smelling lilac; treading softly

out of nowhere springs a female blackbird

singing poetic; romantic love words

her lover answers her call; I listen

as warm lemon tones of sunlight glisten

freckling my skin; so pale from Winter

like Autumn leaves dotted with rust and splinters

I used to dislike them though they rarely stay

and blossom only on a hot Summer's day

in Winter they fade like the merest dream

leaving only a slight imprint; pale as cream

spilled and splattered; memories scattered

freckles remind me of all that matters

to lead a simple life it seems

that I should love everything and follow my dreams

to where my heart leads me

let no-one deceive me

for I can be happy with all that I am

I've made up my mind; I know that I can.

TIME OF NO REPLY – NICK DRAKE

THIS IS THE SUMMER OF MY TRANSITION

The devil that was within me

that found me, then drowned me

could not withstand

the beauty of my love for him

the softness of my gentle hand

could not witness the words that I wrote

could not cope with love that gave him hope

he inhabited my soul and it choked him from within

now he scurries through the darkness

avoiding any last vestige of light; avoiding my eyes

he hides and he lies to rid himself of the truth

that he found within that last dance

he burned me, he scorned me, but then he adored me

he haunted my dreams and begged my return

but I found myself healing as I walked along the shore

the pace of my mind slowed; the peace of my mind showed

that at last I could let go and be myself once more

I walked in his shadow, until I found the light

before I lived like a shadow with no strength to fight

A poor tortured soul; I know how that feels

when love can't release him; thaw his soul cold as steel

Sometimes our love falls on stony ground

like the softness of rose petals and the hope that we once found

dashed against the rocks of life's lessons

deafened by the torment that resounds within our caissons

and lifts us up above the maelstrom of the storms

that threaten to define us and defile us; confine us

This is the summer of my transition

as I find my way back to the right path that heals me

I leave him far behind me; the nightmare recedes

now I sleep like an angel on clouds of soft dreams

and feel lucky that I am still here

amid the love of all my friends.

Dear friends and followers,

I am so grateful to have joined Flickr. This community has supported and inspired me to pursue photography, and I am so thankful to have had this opportunity. I've decided to delete my photographs not because I don't appreciate my older work but because I'm moving in new directions. You can find me at the following links:

Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men. - from The Great Gatsby.

Wow, where to start? I promised you all this photograph a long, long time ago. It's the result of this TTV image, made in March. I completely adore this photo, and have wanted to share it for a long time... the only reason I held out is because I wanted to write a poem to go with it.

Fast-forward six months, and still no poem. So I decided, instead, to post it as my 2,000th photo on Flickr. I know, right? 2,000! How does that happen? Apparently, that happens by posting one image every 1.25 days for almost 7 years. Holy cow.

So, thanks all... for the support, the inspiration and the feedback. I wouldn't be here posting #2,000 if it weren't for all of you.

This poignant letter was written 100 years ago during the Spanish Flu Epidemic by F. Scott Fitzgerald. There are many parallels to today.

THIS SIDE OF PARADISE: A LETTER FROM F. SCOTT FITZGERALD, QUARANTINED IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE

Dearest Rosemary,

It was a limpid dreary day, hung as in a basket from a single dull star. I thank you for your letter. Outside, I perceive what may be a collection of fallen leaves tussling against a trash can. It rings like jazz to my ears. The streets are that empty. It seems as though the bulk of the city has retreated to their quarters, rightfully so. At this time, it seems very poignant to avoid all public spaces. Even the bars, as I told Hemingway, but to that he punched me in the stomach, to which I asked if he had washed his hands. He hadn’t. He is much the denier, that one. Why, he considers the virus to be just influenza. I’m curious of his sources.

The officials have alerted us to ensure we have a month’s worth of necessities. Zelda and I have stocked up on red wine, whiskey, rum, vermouth, absinthe, white wine, sherry, gin, and lord, if we need it, brandy. Please pray for us.

You should see the square, oh, it is terrible. I weep for the damned eventualities this future brings. The long afternoons rolling forward slowly on the ever-slick bottomless highball. Z. says it’s no excuse to drink, but I just can’t seem to steady my hand. In the distance, from my brooding perch, the shoreline is cloaked in a dull haze where I can discern an unremitting penance that has been heading this way for a long, long while. And yet, amongst the cracked cloudline of an evening’s cast, I focus on a single strain of light, calling me forth to believe in a better morrow.

Faithfully yours,

F. Scott Fitzgerald

...and, I don't. Ever.

Another favorite from this spring, in the continuing series of "photographing books". I think I spent an hour in the bedroom that morning with a bunch of tulips, my favorite books (this one is a book of short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald) and the morning light.

The book is from my mom's collection written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and published in 1922. She was born in 16 and as a young woman received books from the Schribner's club. I have several and plan to read them over the holidays. Has anyone read this one?

Thank you for visiting and be well!
