Smoke on the water. Spring time in Montreux. Canton of Vaud , Switzerland.20.04.14, 12:47:59 izakigur no. 5445.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoke_on_the_Water

"

The lyrics tell a true story: on 4 December 1971, Purple were in Montreux, Switzerland, to record an album using a mobile recording studio (rented from the Rolling Stones and known as the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio—referred to as the "Rolling truck Stones thing" and "a mobile" in the lyrics) at the entertainment complex that was part of the Montreux Casino (referred to as "the gambling house" in the song lyric). On the eve of the recording session, a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino's theatre. This was to be the theatre's final concert before the casino complex closed down for its annual winter renovations, which would allow Deep Purple to record there. At the beginning of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on "King Kong", the place suddenly caught fire when somebody in the audience fired a flare gun toward the rattan covered ceiling, as mentioned in the "some stupid with a flare gun" line.[11][12] Although there were no major injuries, the resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song (credited to bass guitarist Roger Glover, who related how the title occurred to him when he woke from a dream a few days later) referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Purple watched from their hotel. "It was probably the biggest fire I'd ever seen up to that point and probably ever seen in my life" said Glover. "It was a huge building. I remember there was very little panic getting out, because it didn't seem like much of a fire at first. But, when it caught, it went up like a fireworks display". The "Funky Claude" running in and out is referring to Claude Nobs, the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival who helped some of the audience escape the fire.

Claude Nobs (2006), the "Funky Claude" mentioned in the song

Left with an expensive mobile recording unit and no place to record, the band was forced to scout the town for another place to set up. One promising venue (found by Nobs) was a local theatre called The Pavilion, but soon after the band loaded in and started working/recording, neighbours took offence at the noise. The band was only able to lay down backing tracks for one song (based on Blackmore's riff and temporarily named "Title No.1"), before local police shut them down.

After about a week of searching, the band rented the nearly-empty Montreux Grand Hotel and converted its hallways and stairwells into a makeshift studio, where they laid down most of the tracks for what would become their most commercially successful album, Machine Head (which is dedicated to Claude Nobs).

The only song from Machine Head not recorded entirely in the Grand Hotel was "Smoke on the Water" itself, which had been partly recorded during the abortive Pavilion session. Its lyrics were composed later, primarily by Gillan and based around Glover's title, and the vocals were recorded in the Grand Hotel.

Because of the incident and the exposure Montreux received when "Smoke on the Water" became an international hit, Purple formed a lasting bond with the town. The song is honoured in Montreux by a sculpture along the lake shore (right next to the statue of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury) with the band's name, the song title, and the riff in musical notes. The new casino in Montreux displays notes from the riff as decoration on its balustrade facing the gambling hall.

On the Classic Albums episode about Machine Head, Ritchie Blackmore claimed friends of the band were not fans of the "Smoke on the Water" riff, which they thought too simplistic. Blackmore retorted by making comparisons to the first movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, which revolves around a similar four note arrangement.[13]

"The amazing thing with that song, and Ritchie's riff in particular," observed Ian Paice, "is that somebody hadn't done it before, because it's so gloriously simple and wonderfully satisfying."

Known only by his stage name, a gull gives a solo performance of Purple Rain on the Cancún coast. Besides Prince, demonstrating note-a-bill range, the feathered frontman also covered work by Phish, Seal, the Eagles and Counting Crows. During his last song, however, he was roped off stage ... and that was a rap :)

The indie rock band Umbrellas was formed in 2005 by former The Lyndsay Diaries frontman, Scott Windsor. After they fulfilled their contract with The Militia Group, freeing them up to record and release their Beach Front Property EP in June 2007. Their sound is, at times, very mellow and atmospheric, yet can also lean toward a more modern/electro-pop sound. With their debut album recorded in a pseudo-haunted house, and their second album recorded in an abandoned comedy club, there are auras of emptiness and darkness swirling throughout the music. Their song "The City Lights" was featured during the climax of the Grey's Anatomy episode "Into You Like A Train," and "Ships" was featured during the Grey's Anatomy episode "Great Expectations, as well as the 7th episode of the 1st season of the tv series "Jericho".

On my way to an appointment yesterday I was riding past a gorgeous lavender bed. Unfortunately I had no time to take photos.

But I remembered photos I took two years ago in the city park with the manual vintage SMC Pentax-M 1:1.7 50mm.

The focal point isn't spot on here @ f/1.7 ... but I like the atmosphere - and it almost looks like the lavender blooms I saw yesterday ; ))

Happy Weekend to you !

Stephen Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990) was an American musician, best known as the guitarist and frontman of the blues rock trio Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Born and raised in Dallas, Vaughan dropped out of high school and moved to Austin in 1972 where he quickly began to gain a following on the local club circuit.

Vaughan died at the age of 35 in a helicopter crash in East Troy, Wisconsin after performing with Double Trouble at Alpine Valley Music Theatre. Although his mainstream career spanned only seven years, he is regarded as one of the most influential musicians in the history of blues music, and one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Vaughan's music continued to achieve commercial success with several posthumous releases and has sold over 15 million albums in the United States alone. Vaughan was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, along with Double Trouble bandmates Chris Layton, Tommy Shannon, and Reese Wynans.

This is always a confusing day for my cat, Jarvis Cocker, who thinks he gets an extra birthday today. My partner, Cinchel, last night said, "Tell him it's his Saint's day!" and then we both had a laugh over the idea that Jarvis Cocker of Pulp is a saint...not with those lyrics!

It was just like the time when Bob Dylan took the morning off from polishing his Nobel Prize and accepted an invitation to go and jam with Showaddywaddy. Remember Showaddywaddy? Ever even heard of Showaddywaddy? Well yes, there’s my point right there. Even if something is stirring from your dim and distant past, I bet you’ve only remembered the long haired frontman called Dave Thingumywotsit. Or maybe something just rang in your head about a connection between one of the band members and Luton Town FC. And while Bob Dylan wrote songs that endured the test of time and became the weather vane of an entire generation, Showaddywaddy sang “Under the Moon of Love,” before disappearing into the murky depths of the cabaret club circuit forever. Probably.

Roll forward a few years and a highly accomplished photographer from the edges of Devon had agreed to meet up with three bumbling fools in a forest, fools who’d arrived from across the border, full of good intentions and ill chosen camera settings. In terms of bringing a wealth of expertise to the party, Nick was doing most of the heavy lifting, while we were just curious as to where he was spending all of his mysteriously moody Dartmoor days. I’d spent a couple of hours on Flickr searching for images from the moor taken by the clever souls whose work I follow, and had mostly ended up adding his clickbait to my favourites folder. A lone hawthorn here, a doom laden moor there, and a fogbound forest lurking in the shadows. He’s a man who knows how to deliver atmosphere in an image. But I was also conscious that he almost never shares the location in his posts. Ok so he did just once, with a high contrast stunner of Haytor. Then again, you can’t really disguise Haytor.

Although it hadn’t been expressly forbidden, I had no intention of spreading the details of Nick’s darkened corners. “Do we have to sign the Official Secrets Act before you show us around?” I asked. “I’ll bring three blindfolds,” came Nick’s reply. The fact that I was driving might make this challenging of course - after all I wouldn’t want to be having any unfortunate episodes with those Dartmoor ponies that wander the roads with little sense of fear. But I think he was joking. We were joined by Carl, another local photographer who I was meeting for the first time. Carl works for a company that provides services to the armed forces, so he’d already signed his vow of silence.

It was a good job I spotted the Iceland flag on the beanie hat worn by the man walking purposely towards Wistman’s Wood as we came away from our first assignment towards the end of the morning. Well if someone’s wearing an Iceland hat and they’re heading towards Wistman’s, it seems pretty likely that they’re part of our community doesn’t it? “I like the hat,” I chirped as he was about to pass us. “Are you Dom?” came the reply. We’d met our Bob Dylan, almost by accident. Apparently he’d left a message on my phone, but there’s no signal at Wistman’s - only mist and gnarly trees. He’d gone out of his way to come and tell us that the afternoon plan we’d hatched had been kiboshed by external events, but while there was still time, he was keen to show us one of his magical forests, where he promised as much fog and filth as we could manage in a single helping. Apparently we wouldn’t have to walk very far either. It had already been a fairly robust trek to Wistman’s and when daylight hours are limited, you don’t want to be spending too much of your precious time yomping about in the mire do you?

“I thought I’d find you here.” An hour later, I’d discovered a black flow in the dark spaces beneath the canopy. Even though this was our first meeting, he’d obviously learned enough about me to know I’d gravitate towards anything that looked like water. Generously, Nick had even shared some of his recently discovered compositions with us, before we’d all disappeared into our own corners of this silent woodland space, occasionally bumping into one another and examining shots on backs of screens. “I’ve found a lovely tree in the clearing!” I called as I saw Lee frowning at his Leica in the distance. “Oh yes, we saw that one too,” said Dave, hidden somewhere not far away. It wasn’t the same tree though - we’d discover that later. “See those trees there?” asked Carl. “They’re the ones I photographed last weekend that I showed you.” They did indeed look very familiar.

The meeting had been all too brief, but Nick’s seemingly unlimited knowledge of the moors had brought some enticing snippets for the following day. And I’d already resolved to return to this place too. In less than an hour I’d barely scratched the surface. So many secrets waiting to be discovered.

I very much doubt that Bob has heard of Showaddywaddy either. I don’t think he listened to any of their long forgotten hits when he was looking for inspiration for “Blood on the Tracks,” and nor is he likely to get excited by the knowledge that the lead guitarist’s son was a professional footballer. But we’d made some more connections with like minded souls, and that had been a good thing. I’ve met quite a lot of you now. In fact at this rate I’m going to be counting the names of those of you I haven’t met in person on the fingers of one hand. I should keep your head down if I were you.

I'm still firm on planning and getting everything they need for the band.

Virko is the lead vocalist and Shael will be on drums FOR SURE! :)

They will write most of the songs too.

There will be 3 guitarists (2 solo and 1 base), its already defined that Dusk will be on one of the solo guitars, and maybe Jae on bass. Still choosing who plays what. I don't see Laius joining, he's is too busy with the Circus and acting... he would be a great manager for the band thou! ♪ ♫ ♩ ♬

Yes I'm Changing (Tame Impala)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI60jMIDQ0U

There is another future waiting there for you

I saw it different, I must admit

I caught a glimpse, I'm going after it

...

Yes I'm changing, can't stop it now

And even if I wanted I wouldn't know how

Another version of myself I think I found, at last

And I can't always hide away

...

Quoted from SongFacts:

Personal transition is a major theme flowing through frontman Kevin Parker's songwriting on the Currents album. He explained to Uncut magazine: "That was precipitated by what I found myself singing about. I usually just follow my instincts when I start writing and then I will notice a theme emerging. I tried to amplify that so I can make a cohesive album, one that has a message and story."

"And yeah, this theme of this personal transition and moving on really went together with the music. I wanted to explore this idea of feeling like you're turning into the kind of person you thought you'd never become or starting to appreciate things you've never done it before," he continued. "You set these rules and standards, then one day you feel like you want to embrace other things, and the only way to do that is to abandon your previous self."

Parker added that this was the song where he felt it all started to cohere, stating "'Yes, I'm Changing' was the first time I managed to string together the right words to bring home what I'm trying to say."
