Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Limburg, Landbouwbelang, Crane (slightly cut from B&T)

Most of the cranes in the big Lanbouwbelang building complex are outside the building. But this one is not—it's a kind of eerie gestalt.

This is, by the way, probably the only part of Landbouwbelang that isn't redeveloped into musical or exhibition space. Rumour has it that the crane is called Caroline. Check it out: Landbouwbelang.

About the Landbouwbelang:

In 1939, the construction of a grain transhipment facility for the agricultural ‘Coöperatieve Vereeniging Landbouwbelang’ was started. It was not completed until after the Second World War. In the 1970s, the building was sold to the adjacent Royal Dutch Paper Mill (now Sappi), which later sold it to the municipality of Maastricht in 2002. Squatters and artists moved in, and the building started to look dilapidated and graffiti-covered.

The building became controversial, and redevelopment plans have threatened its survival several times. For instance, in 2008, Jo Coenen designed a large musical theatre/entertainment centre (with a casino and a hotel) for Joop van den Ende that would look like a giant cruise ship. In the end, the plans, although supported by Mayor Gerd Leers, came to nothing.

From 2017 onwards, the future of the Landbouwbelang hung in the balance. The Agricultural Interest building was once again threatened because of new redevelopment plans. The municipality has indicated that the building activities are important for the city. Still, a relocation of the activities (for example, to the site of the Rubber Factory Radium) may be inevitable. In 2025, the situation is still unclear. The users of the building, the Cultural Freezone Collective (CFC), don’t think the Radium is a viable option because the edifice is too small and the rent is too high. The website of the CFC is here.

The people of the CFC present themselves this way: “Simply put, we are an overlapping network of non-profit groups, self-organised volunteers, sustainable ideas and independent spaces in and around Maastricht with an interest in fostering and enabling explicitly non-commercial, localised, and self-sufficient cultural initiatives to manifest and grow.”

This is number 50 of the Maastricht album and 111 of Gloriously dilapidated.

The last time we visited this part of the Maastricht Maaskade was some 12 years ago and I thot that thru the forces of gentrification this place would have been redeveloped. But luckily this wasn’t the case. This wasn’t due to the lack of trying of the municipality and even Joop van den Ende. But I’m getting ahead of my self. Let’s start at the beginning.

For ever and ever without break or decay.

When the hills are all flat.

And the rivers are all dry.

When it lightens and thunders in winter.

When it rains ands snows in summer.

When Heaven and Earth mingle-

Not till then will I part from you.

If this be thy wish and if this be thy play,

then take this fleeting emptiness of mine,

paint it with colors, gild it with gold,

float it on the wanton wind and spread it in varied wonders.
