Finally, 10 years later after I climbed my first mountain with a height over 4000 m alone (in german »Viertausender«) I realize that a lot of the photos I took at dawn and early sunrise have not been developed or at least not satisfying from an actual viewpoint. Hence, now the time has come to optimize them as I find a lot which I like.
Here we can see Breithorn at dawn. From the southern side this is one of the easiest high mountains but you can well imagine that there are some really challenging routes leading through the northern face which can be seen here. And of course, some experienced freeriders are riding down that wall in winter through the snowy zones.
I just edited some overlooked shots which I made 10 years ago before we started traverse of Monte Rosa, the so-called »Spaghetti-Route« (it’s called so because you will always stay overnight at alpine huts on the Italian side if you make this hike).
At first 5 single shots were merged in Lightroom using cylindrical view. With actual techniques of Lightroom I made a mask for the sky and careful edition of the foreground combined with separate edition of the sky to adjust contrast and colours. Final optimaziation was done in Photoshop using a layer with an optimized gradation curve.
In the left half from left to right we see Nordend, Dufourspitze, Zumsteinspitze, Signalkuppe and Parrotspitze. In the right half we see Liskamm (the eastern summit is hardly visible) and Breithorn with its 5 summits. There are a lot of famous routes leading on this mountains varying from rather easy up to very serious and it is a paradise for freeriders in winter or spring too.
At this point of view at the creat between the summits of Breithorn, we can look at the western part of the massif and have a good insight to the northeastern icewall which is visited by freeriders in spring when conditions are good. At the left side we can see Grand Combin in the distance and on the right Matterhorn which is quite nearer.

Today is the day! Riders are on course. The best mountain bike freeriders in the world are in Virgin, Utah at the 2021 Red Bull Rampage to find out who's the very best.
This photo was featured in Flickr Explore on August 20th, 2020.
Originally from Jamaica, Sanchez moved to Southern Utah a couple of years ago and quickly became a fixture in the local mountain bike community. He's a great rider and a super athlete to work with. We made this photo in June on the inaugural ride for his new Rocky Mountain Slayer 29er freeride bike.
This was part of an unsuccessful series exploring the new growth of a honeysuckle curled round and round a prickly wild rose shoot. There were new leaf buds on both the free riding honeysuckle and the bramble two days ago and today the honeysuckle is clearly past the bud stage. None of the shots of the twisted freerider looked great but I liked this shot because of the protective "fur" coat on the new leaves. Fuzziness might well protect against the frosts which could yet return and certainly helps deter aphids and saw-fly larvae but I suspect both will not emerge for some time.

Southern Utah mountain biker Kade Brantingham, gets some air off a slickrock lip on Gooseberry Mesa.
I'm headed down to Southern Utah today to shoot Red Bull Rampage, again. I don't know how many times I've shot this event but it's always exciting to see the best mountain bike freeriders in the world take on the steep, exposed red rock cliffs outside Virgin, Utah. It's a new venue this year so that will be exciting, too. This is French rider, Thomas Genon, dropping in at the top of the course during the 2017 Rampage finals.
