Despite the 4.30AM start and patient wait whilst the trains stopped for press photos, This was the moment I realised I wasn't going to get a photo of 4 trains in formation. The Azuma set off far quicker than the other trains and gained a full train length before it passed us. Flying Scotsman, a HST and a 225 can be seen in the distance.

Through a remarkable piece of cooperation several months in the making, Network Rail, Virgin Trains East Coast, the National Railway Museum and Hitachi came together to organise a very special celebration of East Coast Main Line trains from the past, present and future on 23rd April 2017. Billed as a once-in-a-generation event, four generations of motive power travelled together along the four track section of railway from Tollerton to York, running under a full line posession.

After a photo stop alongside The Sidings hotel, the formation was broken as Hitachi's Class 800 'Azuma' No. 800101 accelerated away from the other three trains, disappointing many of the onlookers gathered at the overbridge on Overton Road. However, it could be argued that we were lucky to get a more unique view. LNER Class A3 No. 60103 "Flying Scotsman", a Virgin Trains East Coast MKIV set led by Class 82 DVT No. 82205 and a HST led by Class 43 power car No. 43238 "National Railway Museum 40 Years 1975-2015" pass the "Edinburgh 200 Miles" sign as they continue towards Skelton Junction and York.

After a photo stop alongside The Sidings hotel, Hitachi's Class 800 'Azuma' No. 800101 accelerated away from the other three trains at the request of an advertising director filming the event for future publicity. Although this was a disppointment to many it was still a spectacular event to witness.

A 'full house' at Stevenage on 10 June 1989 (Network Day), although I cannot recall the circumstances that led to 91006 on the left being held at a red signal as it had arrived a good few minutes earlier, nor what manoeuvre was being carried out by the HST on the right.

Undoubtedly the highlight of the Four Trains event, especially for the gallery at 200 mile bridge..

Virgin Azuma 800101 is seen arriving under the canopy at York on Sunday 23rd April having ran into the station alongside the Flying Scrapheap, a shot that seemingly only an exclusive few could get at the station and also on the run down from Tollerton.

The event consisted of 60103 'Flying Scotsman', the Azuma, DVT 82205 'Flying Scotsman' and 43238 demonstrating 4 generations of ECML power running parallel for the entire way, or so we expected...
