The Australian Hasselblad representatives came to the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra on December 6 2016, bringing with them the two latest cameras in the Hasselblad family; the Hasselblad H6D-50c Medium Format DSLR camera (not shown), and this camera, the Hasselblad X1D-50c mirrorless medium format camera.
I am coming from the background of a Hasselblad 501CM camera body and CFV-50c digital back. This is the same Sony sensor that the X1D-50c uses, but the latter has far more digital information available to the back, I was interested to see how it would be managed and displayed.
I would have to study the raw file header to understand what information is available, but I was still able to see how some of this information would be displayed, and how the user would interact with it (i.e., yes, this is a touch screen). Non-articulating, which has upset some, but I find it to be reassuringly solid this way. For me, the large size of the text and the simplicity of the layout made it easy to see what was being communicated. Some displays leave me with the impression that I am trying to read what has been written on a grain of rice.
As for other overall design aspects, the body appears to have fewer rather than more buttons, an approach that avoids clutter and complexity. And finally, one other "feature" is that the camera is relatively flat across the top profile. The designers could have opted for the more conventional "viewfinder hump", but I find this to be a good choice - it is part of a design that reeks of Art Deco to me.
Overall, a beautiful, distinctive design.

The photograph was taken using the following hardware ...
- iPhone 7 Plus.
I acquired the photograph (4032 x 3024 pixels) handheld with an ISO of 80, exposure time of 1/5 seconds, and an aperture of f/1.8. The iPhone flash was not used.
Post-processing ...
- I downloaded the photographs from my iPhone 7 Plus to the MacBook Air 11" using a lightning/USB cable and the iExplorer app (Macroplant).
- Sometimes I download the images taken on a shoot over WiFi using PhotoSync (touchbyte GmbH). Notably, I have found that iExplorer does not handle properly the images that have been edited using the native Apple iPhone "Photos" app (i.e., it will only transfer the original image, not the edited image).
- Following download, I viewed and sorted the photographs that were taken using XnViewMP (Pierre-e-Gougelet) or Lightroom (Adobe Systems Incorporated).
Lightroom - Imported the image into Lightroom.
Lightroom - Used the Spot Removal Tool cover up the distracting visual effect of bits of fluff on the tablecloth.
Lightroom - Made various lighting and color adjustments to the image.
Lightroom - Cropped the image retaining the original 4:3 aspect ratio
(3624 x 2718 pixels).
Lightroom - Exported the image to JPEG format with maximum quality.
PhotoSync - Copied the JPEG file to my iPad Mini for any final processing, review, enjoyment, and posting to social media.

This photo was taken by an Asahi Pentax 6 X 7 medium format film camera and SMC PENTAX 67 1:4 45mm lens with a HOYA HMC 82mm O[G] filter using Ilford XP2 Super 400 film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

When I acquired this German beauty, it was already several decades old. But it was my only camera for about 4 years, along with a hand held meter. It taught me everything I needed to know until the digital age.

Ferrotip de format 13x18cm, realitzat amb una càmera Konrad G. Seitz fabricada cap al 1895; objectiu petzval Lerebours et Secretan, fabricat a Paris cap al 1848!!; col·lodió Quinn's Quick Clear de fabricació casolana.
Les plaques de col·lodió es realitzen al moment, cobrint una placa de vidre o planxa metal·lica negra amb col·lodió i sals de iode i/o brom, sensibilitzat amb nitrat de plata. Aleshores s'ha de fer la fotografia i revelar-la en uns 5 minuts, abans no s'assequi la emulsió. És un dels processos fotogràfics més antics del món, inventat el 1851, i que dominà fins el 1880. Però ara ha resorgit, ja que les imatges, molt treballades, que dona són úniques, màgiques i i irrepetibles.

This is a 13x18cm tintype, made with a Konrad G. Seitz tailboard camera, made in Nuremberg c.1895; Lerebours et Secretan petzval lens, made in Paris c.1848! Quinn's Quick Clear collodion, made by me.
The collodion plates are made covering a glass plate or black metal plate with collodion and salts of iodine and / or bromine, sensitized with silver nitrate. Then you have to take the photo and reveal it in about 5 minutes, before the emulsion dries. It is one of the oldest photographic processes in the World, invented in 1851, and which dominated photography until 1880. But now it has resurfaced, as the images, very elaborate to create, that it gives are unique, razor sharp, magical and unrepeatable.
