Walking along a forestry road, I saw a roe doe up ahead (1st in comments), so froze! She was unaware of my presence, so I took some photos, convinced that she'd gallop off at any moment.
She kept putting her head down to graze, so I strode forward as many steps as I could manage before her head shot back up, then I froze again, taking more photos! Did this for about 20 mins, and managed to get about 50 m closer I think (2nd in comments), then she finally spotted me (main shot), and went off!
This was shortly after my wild boar encounter, so I was floating on air by this stage!!!

A cause de la première guerre, une grande partie de la Forêt de Mormal sera détruite. Et entre 1920 et 1930, elle sera nettoyée puis plantée de chênes. Mais pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, les Allemands se servent une fois de plus de la forêt, ils en ont utilisé le bois et s’en sont servis comme zone de repli. En 1998, le Parc naturel régional de l’Avesnois, avec le soutien du Conseil général du Nord et de l’ONF, se chargera de sa protection et de sa sauvegarde. Il y a également quelques collectivités de la région et le Conseil Régional qui leur offrent leur appui et qui s’assurent de satisfaire les attentes de citoyens quant à une meilleure exploitation de la forêt. C’est d’ailleurs la raison pour laquelle il y a de nos jours une prévision pour une meilleure gestion des routes forestières et des sentiers. Ainsi, on a mis en place un site d’accueil, et d’ailleurs on a pu projeter de rénover l’arboretum qui est dans l’étang David.
It might not be the photo of the century, but how I ever contained my excitement when I spotted this gorgeous creature I'll never know!
Everyone I'd spoken to had said that an encounter was only likely at night... but I always live in hope!!! I was quietly walking through the woods when I first spotted him. I watched him rooting through the mud for a short while, and then he became aware of my presence, and stared straight at me!
Their eyesight is quite poor, so I guess he wasn't too sure how much of a threat I really was. However, after a few seconds (and me not breathing!!!!), he upped tail and took off through the vegetation!!!! I walked around with a stupid grin on my face for the rest of the afternoon!!!!

Have always liked them, but do so even more now I've seen one feasting on a harvestman (which I don't like!!). As they're usually scavengers, I assume this one was already dead when the scorpion fly found it!

Le célèbre géant Gargantua, décrit par
Rabelais aurait été de passage dans la
forêt de Mormal. Plusieurs lieux atypiques
portent son nom : ruisseau Gargantua
(sud Godelot) et pont Gargantua (sur
le GR de Pays). La légende dit qu’il
serait enterré au lieu-dit « Tombeau de
Gargantua » situé près de Locquignol. Il
s’agit d’un gros tumulus aplanis durant
la seconde guerre mondiale pour y
aménager un champ de tir. En 1974,
plusieurs tombes mérovingiennes
furent mises au jour lors de fouilles
archéologiques mais aucun géant ne fut
découvert.

Nom scientifique : coprinus picaceus
La chair est mince, délicate, blanche à l'état juvénile, devenant grisâtre puis brunâtre. Les spores sont noires. Comme les autres membres de la famille, en général, il se dégrade rapidement. Ce champignon peu courant se développe le plus souvent isolément. Sa saveur doucâtre mais de caractère gustatif et odoriférant désagréable la classe parmi les non comestibles, même si aucun rapport de toxicité ne semble avoir été émis à ce jour.

Don't like them, but have to admit to these being quite attractive ones! Think they are Dermacentor sp.
Fortunately, I wasn't bitten during this trip!

Hope I have the ID right, but the cerci look quite distinctive!

C'est l'avantage principal de cette méthode de débardage en traction animale :
* Les chevaux ne tassent pas le sol, dû à leur faible portance d'environ 0.5 bar.
* Les chevaux ne s'enlisent pas, ils peuvent franchir des rivières et des talus.
* Les chevaux n'écorcent pas les réserves. Celà évite la prolifération de champignons, de pourritures et n'entraîne pas de dégradation de la qualité des troncs d'avenir, et donc pas de pertes financières.
* Les chevaux contribuent à la régénération naturelle de la flore forestière. C'est à dire qu'ils évitent d'écraser les jeunes plants.
* Les chevaux n'ont pas besoin de chemins. Ils passent dans les petits sentiers et dans les sapinières étroites.
* Les chevaux peuvent travailler dans des reliefs difficiles d'accès (Fortes pentes, présence de rochers). Les pentes maximum sont de 45% mais les animaux se fatigueront aussi plus vite et pour un meilleur rendement les limites sont généralement de 10%.
* Les chevaux peuvent travailler en zones humides, sans risque d'enlisements ni d'orniérages.
* Les chevaux ne rejettent pas de substances polluantes et ne produisent pas de nuisances sonores. Pas de risques de fuites d'hydrocarbures ou de lubrifiants, polluant le sol et les cours d'eaux.
* Les chevaux ne dégradent pas les chemins forestiers et routes avoisinantes. Il n'y a pas de motricité sur les roues des porteurs hippomobiles.
