Ibis is the research vessel of the PCCS disentanglement team (www.coastalstudies.org)
This was a particularly difficult day on the water. WDC took Easterly out to see how many animals we could ID over the course of the day. Our first sighting was of a humpback whale displaying some odd behavior - surfacing for just a few seconds to take a breath and rolling as it dove. It would be down for 6-10 minutes on average before we saw it surface again. After nearly an hour of observation, we were able to determine that this animal was entangled with dark fishing line wrapped around its head and through the mouth. We contacted the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies disentanglement team and stood by for 4 hours as they tried to disentangle the whale, which we identified as a young animal named Forceps. Unfortunately due to the nature of the entanglement, the team's efforts proved to be unsuccessful after 4 hours of attempts. Forceps has not been seen since.
