this was just a silhouette that i fucked around with in painter. alternating multiply layers and normal layers with a "glow" brush seems to be what i tend to use naturally. not really comfortable doing it in photoshop yet. having the ability to adjust each layers opacity is a "cheat" but makes the whole thing pretty damn foolproof.
i'm used to working like this in oil paint--monochrome to full color. the few designers that i know do the same thing digitally. work in grayscale and then use color layers, etc in photoshop to knock the color around. seems superquick if i ever practice enough.
