This is a page from the book, Mastering Layout by Mike Stevens. Mike was instrumental in educating fellow sign painters on the principles involved in good sign design. I found it interesting that while showing why one sign layout was better than another, he didn't present any layouts as having attained a level of perfect design. Even those touted as superior were shown to be lacking in one area in order to achieve something else of greater design importance. Incidentally, the bouncy hand lettered alphabet shown on this plate was designed by Mike and is now available as a computer font called Vasona from Sign DNA.

The ABC of Lettering by J.I.Biegeleisen. Copyright 1940. Approx. 9.25" x 13" This book is now up to its 6th edition in reprints, but if you compare the cover art of the later editions to the beautiful hardbound cover of this 1940 first edition, you will see why I had to have this one. I am still amazed at the craftsmanship of the sign and lettering artists from that era.
Henderson's Sign Painter
I will add more info on this book at a later date, but for now let me simply say that this was a very difficult find. I have searched for a "first edition" of this book for years. Signs of the Times reprinted it sometime in the 80s and the paperback reprint sells for over $300 at online book stores. I literally found myself searching the rare and out of print online book stores several times a week with nothing coming up. I have yet to see one offered on ebay. Then one evening, there it was at Amazon.com newly listed as a used book for $125.00. I didn't hesitate for one second and bought it. I know its not pretty and appears to be a little worn out, but the inside is in very good shape and quite frankly every first edition of this book that I have seen looks exactly the same. I will always treasure this book.

100 Alphabets by Alf R. Becker, 1941, 7.75" x 10.5"
This is one of my most treasured books. Mr. Becker designed the hand lettered alphabets that have been compiled in this book as a monthly feature for Signs of the Times magazine. They have been copied by many font designers, some of whom take the credit for themselves. I have been inspired by many of the alphabets that appear in this book and have used them on some of my own hand painted signs.
A new hand painted upright script font, perfect for invitations, birth announcements and wedding stationery.
This is my favorite sign painting book and one of my first purchases. I ordered this copy from N. Glantz & Son, a national sign supplier, shortly after it was reprinted in 1986. This was way before the online auctions so prevalent today. I have seen this as well as earlier printings for sale at some of the rare and used bookstores online and they go for over $300. I may try to get some earlier editions if I ever find a deal.

Sweep Poster, a typeface with a contemporary aesthetic, a mix of geometric and organic shapes that give each letter a special and unexpected design. The conceptual process was developed by making a re-interpretation of the Caslon styles making different explorations by using a calligraphic nib pen in order to find a new personality to each letter.

Heberling's Basic Lettering, 1922, W.A. Herberling, 12.25 " x 9.25".
These show up on ebay from time to time. They usually look well worn and beaten to death and are still priced at $375.00. This one is in near mint condition and though I don't want to divulge what I paid for it I will confess that it was less than the aforementioned price.
A Book of Scripts, Alfred Fairbank, 1949, '50, '52; 5" x 7.25".
This was not an easy read. This covered some of the same history as "The 26 Letters" listed elsewhere in this set, but focused on handwriting instead of printed letters. I found it a bit too technical to enjoy, but labored through to the end.
The design of my new display font is all done.. finished kerning and everything! Now the race to find a site or five, willing to sell it!
I started out with a sketch for the 276ccm which is my brand and logo. After some time, I thought it would be cool as a font too.. and with good help from the master typographer, I managed to digitalise it after sketching all the letters and numbers.

Mastering Layout, Mike Stevens on the Art of Eye Appeal. Copyright 1986. Approx. 8" x 10.75". I had followed Mike's career and untimely death through the pages of SignCraft magazine. Even though many sign artists featured in the magazine credit this book as having opened their eyes to proper sign design and layout, I was reluctant to purchase it, feeling I already knew how to prioritize copy on a sign. Recently, however, I decided I should at least investigate and read his design principles for myself. The book is still in print as a paperback, but of course that wouldn't do for me. I found an out of print first edition hardbound copy on ebay that stayed week after week with no one bidding on it. It couldn't compete with the new paperback copies of the same book for less than half the price. Finally the price was dropped to a level I felt I could justify and I purchased it. I am reading it now for the second time and attempting to slowly implement its design principles in my own work. I am so glad I sprung for the hardbound copy. Its true condition as seen in the picture above is much better than that reflected in the poor quality pic used to advertise it on ebay.
