Here’s a snapshot from our short but unforgettable trip to the French Riviera. My relative found his oasis right here at the Fontaine du Soleil in bustling Place Masséna. While the sun blazed overhead, this iconic fountain, with its striking statue of Apollo, offered a refreshing mist and a welcome pause. He was a real trouper, exploring every corner with his trusty portable fan, proving that the magic of Nice is worth a little summer warmth. It was a beautiful trip, and the memories we made here will last a lifetime

A true highlight of our trip. So happy we got to experience these beautiful, sun-drenched moments together.

A moving glimpse of Place Masséna, where the mist from the Fountain of the Sun offered a moment of relief and wonder. This video was a quick capture, just for you. It holds the rhythm of summer in Nice: sunlight, laughter, and the quiet joy of simply being there. A treasured memory from our short but unforgettable trip...

So grateful we got to experience this together. The magic of Nice stays with me.

...snack, taking in the sights and just plain hanging out, enjoying the vibe des Nicois...

The fountain of the Sun in the heart of Nice has found a place worthy of it after having undergone many vicissitudes!

Created between the two wars by Alfred Janniot, one of the great sculptors of the twentieth century, she had to wait until 1956 to be installed and know the affronts of Nice-thought.

The Apollo was nicknamed by Niçois mocking "the 4 CV" car very popular at the time and for which the god seemed to advertise with the 4 equines that crowned him.

Other Niçois (especially Niçoises) scandalized by the size of the genital attributes ran to the mayor, petition in hand so that the immodest object was removed.

The sculptor tried to coax them by reducing the object of the crime with chisel and chisel, which inspired the mockers a new nickname for the colossus diminished "the virgin".

In spite of this humiliating reduction the Apollo remained of marble.

The operation proved useless, the sex was too big to be swallowed by prudes Nice. The bronzes were relegated to the water treatment center (there is unfortunately no such center for the purification of gazes) and the Apollo began its wandering in the city. He stationed first in the atrium of the new town hall.

Las! The municipal employees felt outraged and they got the departure of the intruder who ended his journey in the Charles Erhmann stadium.

It was not until June 2011 that he returned to the center of the Fontaine du Soleil. Nice could hardly be blamed for the exhibitions devoted to Janniot, world-renowned, for being the city that had dismantled one of his masterpieces!

The God found his place, in the center of the basin, surrounded by restored bronzes. Janniot had been encouraged by Bourdelle to persevere in the path he had chosen, that of the classical tradition. Thus we can find some kinship between his Apollo and Michelangelo's David or the Neptune of the fountain of Florence.

At a height of 7 meters, the god does not fear anyone and looks with curiosity at the Thinkers of Plensa perched on their masts.

Slightly swayed, he turns his back to the sea. It may be thought that he has just plunged into the turquoise waters and that he is nonchalantly holding his bath towel against his leg. Venus turns her back on him and rides on her dolphin.

One could believe in the position of his index that she disrespects him!

Is this the reason why Apollo opens his eyes wide and takes this air dissatisfied?

Fontaine du soleil

The famous Fountain of the Sun / Fontaine du Soleil in Nice, France, is located on the south side of Place Masséna. On it are five bronze statues respresenting Earth, Mars, Mercury, Venus and Saturn and were sculpted by Alfred Janniot.

Caught mid-surge in a storm of spray and sinew, this bronze figure is one of Apollo’s five mythological escorts from the Fontaine du Soleil. Muscled, mounted, and magnificently moist, he wrangles a rearing steed with the confidence of a god’s chosen. Who needs modesty when you’ve got this kind of splash?

Historical Note:

Installed in 1956, Alfred Janniot’s Fontaine du Soleil features Apollo at its centre, flanked by five bronze allegorical figures: Earth, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, and Venus. Each one expresses celestial power with theatrical flair — but few rival the equestrian drama of this water-borne companion.

La Grande roue

The Fontaine du Soleil (Sun Fountain) is a Nice landmark, located at the Place Masséna, the city’s main square. It is surmounted by a statue of Apollo, 7m (23ft) tall. Four horses pull his chariot as he carries the sun across the sky. Sculpted by Alfred Janniot, the ensemble was unveiled in 1956, not to universal acclaim however as some critics complained that his manhood was too large. The sculptor failed to appease these critics by chiselling Apollo’s appendage into something smaller, and the city authorities decided to remove fountain and sculptures to a less prominent part of Nice. The remodelling of Place Masséna in conjunction with the inauguration of the Nice tramway in 2007 provided the opportunity to restore the fountain to its original location, but Apollo and his horses had to wait a little longer, finally arriving in 2011.
