Interior design items in our maritime-themed boat of an office

No theme for this week, so played around taking a shot of this tall floorstanding vase in the lounge and used a couple of handheld torches to create some interesting light.

A studio is a very difficult object. A skyscraper is almost easier.

LINKS DISCUSSION THREADS IN SEVERAL E-ZINES

lifehacker.com/5857093/the-library-workspace

"The Library Workspace. Never let anyone tell you that organization can't be beautiful. Today's featured workspace, from Flickr user iBSSR, makes an entire wall of shelving its centerpiece. Filled with colorful books and decorative items, it makes for both a practical and attractive home office.

The wall-based bookcase was designed by architect Huib van Wijk and looks like a somewhat large undertaking, but the results are beautiful. If you like this, you'll want to check out the other smaller wall bookcase as well, November 7, 2011".

"Workspace of the Week: Dutch details. This week’s (October 28, 2011) Workspace of the Week is iBSSR’s minimalist Mac office space: This selection is located in a minimalist house recently built in Parkstad Heerlen, the Netherlands. (It’s in the southern Limburg province of the Netherlands.) The name of the house is “Minimum to the Max,” which I believe also aptly describes the feel of this room. In the desk and workspace area, there are only computers, desks, task lighting, and chairs. Likely, when the space is in use, there are also project materials strewn about the desks. However, at the end of the day, all items are put away and stored on the bookcase. The bookcase is built into the wall and was part of the original design of the home. Without the bookcase, the space would feel empty or impersonal. With the bookcase, the space transforms into an inspiring studio that can provide clarity and creativity. The long window that runs along the wall opposite of the bookshelf is also nice for bringing natural light into the space. Thank you, iBSSR, for sharing your minimalist space with us, October 28, 2011".

"Bibliophilia: Combining Library with Home Office. It's natural to try and combine rooms when you haven't got enough space, but many people use their home office as an ad hoc library to store their books. Granted, sometimes they end up in piles near a desk, but books are something that bibliophiles love, so they are worth making the effort to store them adequately. In order to maximize your storage space, we recommend getting wall to wall bookcases or shelves. You will be able to find some that fit standard rooms, but anything higher than the norm will most probably require something custom-made (images: Flickr member iBSSR), November 10, 2011".

People say that you have clearer thought patterns when there is less around you. Others say you just need a clean, minimal workspace. Well it comes down to personal preference and what type of person you are in the end. Some people like to have a messy work area and others totally hate it when there is anything out of place. Minimalism has grown a lot over the past few years when it comes to the workplace and I’d love to see it grow even more, October 25, 2011.

A house without books is like a room without windows.

To be or not to be, that is the question. Old, real books versus eBooks: Which wins? Do you use an e-book? If so, which one? Let me know.

Exploring the workplace: the library as a wall shelf, a proposal

Keeping with a cigar theme........

This is an antique floorstanding ashtray dating from the early 1930s. It is made of walnut, brass and bakelite, how cool!

Though I don't smoke cigars that often, I do enjoy an occasional smoke. I keep this ashtray next to the fireplace in my "Man Cave".

So yeah, these are most of the speakers I had in my apartment by this summer...

So the total list of equipment...

Speakers:

Infinity Renaissance 90

Infinity Kappa 8

Polk Monitor 7

Klipsch KG 2

Infinity RS-5 (1987) (visible in TV reflection)

Amps:

Carver C-11 pre-amp

Carver TFM-15CB x3 (one not shown)

Adcom GFA-555

Marantz 1040 integrated

Sources:

NAD 5325 CD player w/ upgraded caps

Carver TX-11 tuner

Dual CS 505-1 turntable (not shown)

My main system now is the Renaissance 90s (R90s for short) bi-amped with the Adcom (325 wpc rms at 4 ohms, stable to 1 ohm) on bottom and one of the Carver TFM-15CBs (150 wpc rms at 4 ohms) on top (the Carver C-11 as the pre). The R90s are so power hungry that when I tried just the Adcom, as I used the Kappa 8s, there was almost no bass whatsoever. With them biamped (90% of the time biamping is useless, especially with receivers) and utilizing the gain control on the Carver, they outperform the Kappas in every way imaginable.

Here's Floorstanding Speakers by Rating on audioreview.com. Note what is first with the most unanimous 5-star ratings out of any speaker....

Technical specs for the here.

Unfortunately the NAD CD player seems to be dead after moving - I may be able to resurrect it, but I'm really due for a CD player with a remote anyway. Actually, after ripping all of my CDs to FLAC I may just go the music server route...

Anyway, all of this is in storage while I'm in Sweden - except the Polks which my brother Eric is using, and the Klipsch & Marantz, which my dad is buying off me.

You can see a small portion of my CDs and records to the left of the Marantz. Oh, and there's a few DVD players that I don't have anymore either. The Sony there had analog 5.1 outs, so I had a HT system set up for a little while. I'm really a stereo guy though...

Red is any of a number of similar colors evoked by light consisting predominantly of the longest wavelengths of light discernible by the human eye, in the wavelength range of roughly 630–740 nm.

Red is used as a symbol of emotions. Emotions are associated with mood, temperament, personality, disposition, and motivation.

What is the importance of emotions in architecture?

At the beginning of this century neuromarketing started to be used as part of the development of a new science using magnetic resonance to define what motivates consumers in their decision making. Such studies have had many revealing results but one in particular has generated a new way of understanding architecture. The way that the brain codifies the majority of the information that it receives is by translating it into emotions, like this it gives a value to things, good brands are connected emotionally with their users through experiences and the great majority of the experiences take place in built spaces. In order for architecture to be transcendent it will have to be defined as starting with the search for emotions that will enable it to connect with its users.

In the case of the BSSR-House - Ambassador of Abstract Art in the Maastricht Region - the fundamentally functional aspects were worked on at the same time as working on the emotional definition of the space, the great majority of the persons that use these spaces take advantage of them to live and work. The emotional solutions would have to be very functional as well being able to give a solution to all the users’ different needs and work habits. That is how the BSSR-Building is made up with private space, informal meeting rooms, Wi-Fi and support areas.

In general the BSSR-House is a taster of what many other building spaces will be like in the not so distant future, spaces that will represent properly the expectations of their owners and that will be sufficiently flexible to practically support any way of living, working and meeting.

Explanation Alessi bathrooms and toilets

ILBAGNOALESSI dOt is a perfectly balanced collection of objects that do not distract attention away from the bathroom's actual purpose: the cleansing of body and soul. "All the objects are primarily devoted to relaxation", the Dutch architect and designer, Wiel Arets describes the design principle of the bathroom that was created in close cooperation with the Italian design company, Alessi.

BATHROOM, PURE AND SIMPLE

Visually linking the stylish washbasin and bathtub, WC and accessories is the signature "dOt", a circular hollow or cut-out that decorates practically every object in the series - and is, at the same time, a function detail. Washbasins and bathtubs share a minimalist look, with ultra smooth surfaces, their effect akin to that of an architectural object. These surfaces openly invite you to place bathroom accessories on them. "The putting together of the ensemble is based on the individual strengths of the separate parts. Each of them has to fulfil its purpose without being dominant in the process".

In a nature area in the Maastricht region, lies BSSR House, the architect Huib van Wijk build this 450m2 house. The starting point for the concept was the perception of the landscape, the Rietveld-van Slobbe Villa, the Peutz-Schunck Glaspaleis as well as the view of Parc Imstenrade and Snowworld. The house forms an object in the landscape; the gravel acts as the plinth.

BSSR House was especially developed for a young family who wanted to enjoy the nearby views while still having a high amount of privacy.

The modern design has a footprint in addition to being a vigorous building in environmental matters.

This modern home, built with Dutch architecture design which incorporate spatial drama, integrates familiarity with the landscape. The building has no features or ornaments which are not necessary for convenience, construction or propriety and even the smallest detail has a meaning or serve a purpose. This Dutch house has a garden with grassland prairies and mixed native hedges, very minimalist interior decorating - with all the walls painted white - and a selection of design furniture. The modern dining room is designed with large glass windows to capture the scenery outside. This simple and pure house, designed by Huib van Wijk - Dutch architect, is situated in the Maastricht Region, Netherlands.

In designing BSSR House particular attention was devoted to assuring that the individual elements did not distract from the original intention of living, sleeping and working...

When it became necessary to move into a larger house, Dutch architect Huib van Wijk was tasked with creating a new home and workspace, BSSR-House (2008-2010). The result is this office space in a new contemporary building. The design incorporates an open plan layout with sliding doors, wall-filling bookshelves and concrete floors.

BSSR House, 2011. Huib van Wijk, architect.

'The ILBAGNOALESSI dOt bathroom collection', a new and complete bath room setting, was conceived from the partnership between Alessi and the famous Dutch architect Wiel Arets.

The formal style is minimal and repeated throughout the range, first conveying a sense of relaxation and only later its functional intentions, leaving room for thought.

The circle is the key factor in the design of ceramics, brass ware and furniture elements, the design meets the need to take the utmost advantage of design but with each component contributing to relaxation.

Sanitary ware, furniture and accessories (toilet brush holder with brush, freestanding, design by Wiel Arets) are produced and distributed by Laufen (Switzerland), faucets by Oras (Finland).

If you were into audio before the dawn of home theaters in a box, compact mini-systems, and iPods, you are probably wondering what happened to the large, floorstanding speakers of yesterday. Remember the classic Cerwin Vega, Pioneer, Technics, or other speakers that used big 15" woofers and had sensitivities over 90 dB? I'm not sure what people are using for parties these days, but an iPod dock with 3" speakers doesn't rock the house in my book. The time has come to bring back speakers that can make your living room or basement sound like a concert hall. Introducing the "Magna Cum Laude" speaker design!

A custom stand supports the twin LG 23's. The idea of a free desk drove me to this also helps for posture. Keyboard receiver is two-way taped to it for a great signal and visibility. Using the lifehacker credit card cable holder hack as well on the CPU end of the desk.

Our new home theater setup. We likes it.

Toshiba 37" is my third monitor and ultimately home theatre.

Running 25' of HDMI to TV and toggle displays with a hot-key. Panasonic mini-system handles audio from pre-outs on Cambridge amp. Can run quadraphonic sound for when the neighbours want to hear the music.

The entire workarea. Still missing a few things, need a record player or CD player and a proper audio rack for them. Want to wire the already modded xbox on to the home network too. Don't fret the beer fridge just can't be seen in the photos.

So far the choas makes things easier to source and move. Speaker placement left me with a lot of room behind the desk so until i get a real desk this seems to be the best approach, i kinda like the look.

Router and printer placement for easy access.
