I stopped into Capitol Coney by the GM Truck & Bus factory a couple of times last weekend. Prior to this, the last time I was at Capitol was two summers ago, when I stopped in for breakfast before touring the Flint Assembly Plant.
I recognized my server, Tammy, from two years ago, and we had a really cool conversation. I like this place a lot.

Last weekend was my first time being at the site of the Cronin Downs soap box derbies behind Flint Southwestern Academy High School.
The soap box derby ramp is a familiar site to anyone in Genesee County who has driven along this stretch of I-69 between downtown and the I-75 interchange (which means pretty much everybody).

Rounding the interchange between I-75 and I-69, it is almost like a beacon home to see the Flint Assembly Plant ("Truck & Bus") from the interstate. It is a hopeful sight to see an operational plant in Flint, and a positive reminder of the booming, manufacturing-driven economy which once was.

When I saw this newly-unveiled statue of Louis Chevrolet in my hometown this summer, I was overpowered by a sense of reverence and I actually welled up. There was something really special about seeing this homage to the Swiss-born immigrant who bears the name of so many cars which were built here in Flint - cars I love.
Chevrolet vehicles are still built in Flint these days - Silverado pickup trucks. I got to see them being built last summer during a (free) tour of the Flint Assembly Plant on Van Slyke.

Almost like a welcome mat to the city of Flint, Truck & Bus (Flint Assembly) stands proudly where I-69 meets I-75, churning out Chevrolet and GMC Trucks as quickly as Americans can buy them.
It's always a little sad to see Truck & Bus when I leave Flint, but also a happy one, because this is an operational factory which builds a quality product which still sells in mass quantities.

Leaving Flint always makes me so sad, but happy to be headed back home to Chicago, my adopted city, with my home, job, friends and life there.
Perhaps one day it will be possible for me to return to Flint and make a home here in this perfectly sized city.
The General Motors Truck & Bus (Flint Assembly) factory always seems to serve as a welcome mat when I arrive, and passing it when I'm leaving Flint is like exiting the front door. I'm trying to get some of my classmates to tour the factory with me (again) this summer.
