I saw this laundry and also the background on the Italian Riviera and made a minimalist study out of it. I published the image on Instagram, where it was one of the most successful posts I ever published. Unfortunately, Instagram suspended my account after I experimented with a follower tracking app. Now the work shall live on here.

Although it's always the same beach, it looks different every evening. An exceptional sunset like the one in March 2019 can always happen, but it is rare. It needs the right cloud structure. At the moment it is too cloudy in the south of Sri Lanka.

Eén van de meest plausibele verklaringen voor de opkomst van shoefiti in de laatste jaren komt denk ik uit de filmwereld. In het magistrale Big Fish liet regisseur Tim Burton in 2003 de mensen in een idyllisch dorpje wonen waar alle straten uit gras bestonden en de nieuwe inwoners, bij aankomst, hun schoenen over een lange kabel gooiden, want dat schoeisel hadden ze toch nooit meer nodig. Burton was trouwens niet de eerste regisseur die die vondst bedacht: zes jaar eerder liet Barry Levinson in Wag the Dog duizenden Amerikanen hun schoenen over draden gooien ter eerbetoon aan een soldaat die op de Balkan was gesneuveld en William Old Shoe Schumann heette…
