I had a few ideas for "High Key" but got stuck with this one because I wanted to include rainbow/prism-coloured light reflections by all means. The sun shone brightly this Sunday, and when it had turned around enough to shine through the window next to my photo table, I took the glass prism and tried to catch a rainbow. Well, the rainbow reflection spread everywhere, on the wall and on the floor, but it was quite tricky to place the prism so that it would reflect the colours onto this dandelion seed head enclosed in a resin ball.
Now you might ask, "So where are the rainbow colours?", because in this image, there clearly are none. While I managed to finally place the prism so that it created a rainbow beam on my table (in front of which I put the paperweight), and it yielded the desired result, the photos I had taken before, without too much sunshine through the window, had simply turned out better exposed and sharper. So I discarded the rainbow idea, at least for now, and went for the technically better photo.
This paperweight sphere was handmade in Swansea, Wales, by Hafod Grange Paperweights, a company established in 1968. They have a range of two differently sized paperweights: "Delicate blooms and seed heads encased in flawless resin", as it is stated on their website. It beats me how they keep the flowers' or seed heads' fragile shapes when encasing them in the clear resin. This is what I found on Hafod Grange's website: "Clear polyester resin, containing a UV filter to stop fading, is used to embed the botanical specimens without destroying them, as molten glass would, and the globe shape allows the specimen to be seen in its beauty from all angles." It works. Beautifully so.
