Flagstaff lies near the southwestern edge of the Colorado Plateau and within the San Francisco volcanic field, along the western side of the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the continental United States. In 1999, the Great Pinecone Drop became Flagstaff’s New Year’s Eve tradition, when the Weatherford Hotel rang in the new millennium and honored the Hotel’s 100-year anniversary. Since then, thousands have gathered in the streets for the countdown into the New Year and the lowering of the Pinecone followed by a brief fireworks display.
One of my favorite places to watch and photograph the Santa Fe Railway was in Arizona's Coconino National Forest. Areas east of Flagstaff were a great place to catch the morning fleet of eastbound trains. If Amtrak was running a little late, it would arrive at sunrise, followed by Santa Fe intermodal hot shots and merchandise trains. Sept. 30, 1994 was a busy morning to be trackside. Among the fleet was this all yellow and blue powered piggyback train with a trio of SD40-2s and a single SD45u. The train is approaching Darling with the San Francisco Peaks enshrouded in clouds that by mid-afternoon would become rain showers.
As viewed from Avery Peak (4,090') in the Bigelow Range. Hiking Avery Peak and West Peak makes for a challenging but rewarding outing.

A brief burst of sun breaks through the thick cloud cover above Flagstaff, Arizona to find an ultra-hot Willow Springs to San Bernadino Z as it weaves through town on its cross-country journey to Southern California. Residents from the warmer areas of Arizona have taken the opportunity to visit the famous Route 66 town on this weekend to take in the record snow that fell across the northern part of the state. The weather made travel on I-40 extremely treacherous but had little effect on BNSF's operations as train after train of intermodal trailers plowed through the light powder along the former Santa Fe Seligman Sub.

Minutes after sunrise, Santa Fe and BNSF locomotives pull eastbound containers through East Flagstaff, Arizona.
When vacationing in the 80s and 90s, I would often lodge in this part of Flagstaff. The 66 Motel was a great place to stay, as was the Americana motel, bordering the Santa Fe main lines on Santa Fe Avenue (former US 66). I would begin the day with a Grand Slam breakfast at Denny's before driving east to Cosnino or Darling to catch the morning fleet.

The Tudor-style depot—built in 1926—houses both the operating Amtrak station and the Flagstaff Visitor Center.

The San Francisco Peaks are a volcanic mountain range in the San Francisco volcanic field in north central Arizona, just north of Flagstaff and a remnant of the former San Francisco Mountain. The highest summit in the range, Humphreys Peak, is the highest point in the state of Arizona at 3,851 m in elevation. Prior to its collapse due to a lateral eruption around 200,000 years ago and subsequent glacial erosion, the San Francisco Peaks fully matured elevation is estimated to have been around 4,900 m.
