One of my favorites. This flag was torn to hell from years of use and still flying. Earlier, I complained to the Iraqi soldiers to take it down, but now I'm glad they didn't.
To celebrate Flag Day on June 13, for the 8th straight year the U.S. Embassy's Public Diplomacy Section organized a competition with high school students to develop depictions of all 50 U.S. States and the District of Columbia. Nearly 300 enthusiastic high school students took part in the competition which took place at the Ambassador’s residence where they exhibited the displays they created to illustrate various representative elements of each of the states, in order to convey the message for this year’s theme: “America’s Strength: The Diversity of Its People”. First time participating, this year's high schools were: Gheorghe Lazar (Bucharest), Mihai Viteazul (Bucharest), Nicolae Balcescu (Oltenita), Decebal (Bucharest) and Ion Neculce (Bucharest). The winners received American books, music and movies (Lucian Crusoveanu / Public Diplomacy Office)

I was standing under this flag (one of very many) at the Rockefeller Center enjoying the afternoon sun and the cool breeze and all I could think of was how much of a melting pot NY actually is. Every direction I look, I see at least 3 to 4 different nationalities represented...what a seriously awesome thing when people who are different in culture, tongue and even belief can sit under the same sun and share such happy times together.
As for the picture, I just thought how amazing the colors looked when struck by the bright sun and how it waved boldly in the strong wind. I didn't know which country it belonged to but I think that's my point....should it really matter? We're all the same..we're all human.
For the curious I looked it up and it happens to be the flag of Mauritius, a small island nation off the coast of the African continent.
On the 1st of October, it's National Day in China. As 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the PRC, almost every building in town flew the flag.
This was just a small part of the demonstration, in the center of these flags some guys were drumming and chanting, it was pretty cool...

Flag Day is already a well-known and beloved competition among students from five high schools in Bucharest, organized by the Public Diplomacy Section. Participating for the first time, this year’s high schools (Mihai Eminescu, Nicolae Iorga, C.A. Rosetti, Mihail Sadoveanu and Dimitrie Paciurea) developed depictions of all 50 U.S. States and the District of Columbia.
Held in the Embassy’s courtyard for the first time, the 150 students exhibited the displays they created to illustrate representative elements for each of the states, all related to the history, culture and language of the Native Americans. The winners received American books and stationary and had a fun pizza picnic on the lawn.

This is Six Flags AstroWorld, seen from the AstroDome's parking lot. As a native Texan born and raised just north of Houston, this was my home park until it was demolished in 2005.
