Flag and church at sunset in Wyandotte, MI. Backlighting of the flag by the sunset gave it an interesting glow.

Seems like a good photo for the album cover!

This is one of a dozen photos needed to get a decent shot of an American flag flying nearby. The two specks in the upper right are American Bald Eagles from a nearby nest.

I saw a photograph of Cub Scouts burning an American flag at a fire station a short while back. They burn the flag, out of respect, when they want to "decommission" it. Though I remembered hearing that flags are burned rather than allowed to touch the ground, the only time I had seen a burning flag was at a protest. It got me thinking about the different intentions around burning a flag and that the mere act of burning a flag is not in and of itself an act of protest.

Many veterans hate it when the flag is burned in protest because they feel that it symbolically destroys everything that they fought for, freedoms they fought to keep for their children and freedoms their fathers fought to keep for them. Others feel that being allowed to burn the flag exemplifies their right to freedom of expression, while others burn flags because they feel the US has turned its back on the freedoms the forefathers envisioned. Whatever the case may be, there are multiple facets to a seemingly singular act.

I wanted to try to capture that complexity in an image. Posterity and history, war and freedom, respect and disdain are important themes when we talk about flag burning. With those themes in mind, I wanted to create an image that could be interpreted in numerous ways. Did I succeed in that? How do you interpret the image? As this is my first composite image, ever, is the image itself technically satisfactory?

Yes, it WAS windy! At the top of the tower the sustained winds were probably in the 30-40 mph range while gusts were topping 50 mph. It was one heck of a view and well worth the ffort, but I had to go inside the tower to change lenses, and I took off my hat and attached it to my bag strap to keep it from returning to Ohio before me.

Bringing the Flag Kite back to the ground

O Canada!

Our home and native land!

True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,

The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

In Jubilee Place, in Canary Wharf on the Isle of Dogs, this is the window of Fiorelli, the handbag and accessories company that pretends to be Italian, but was actually created by Dunlop in the 1980s and taken over by the Lunan Group in 1995. Photo taken on July 24, 2012.

Icons carry so much baggage. Just pushing the shutter button made me feel like I was making a political statement, one that I didn't fully comprehend. But it's just a bit of cloth, isn't it?

Russians appeared to be one of the most 'flag-proud' people we have come across on our travels so far. That probably shouldn't come as a big surprise, but it somehow always amazes me how a couple of coloured bands of fabric can instil such strong emotions in human beings. But then again, that's probably why I do research on collective identities (see www.imagining.eu).

Construction warning flags indicating gas main (yellow) and telephone trunk (red) on the township road allowance in front of my house. There may be some work done on Church St. this year. However, it cannot be started until the new school is ready for occupancy and the two old schools are closed due to child pedestrian traffic and multiple school buses accessing the schools.
