With its distinctive plumage and evocative cry, the African fish-eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) is probably the most familiar bird of prey in Africa. Perched majestically on a high branch, the contrast between the white upper-body and tail (not obvious in this shot), the chestnut belly and the black wings is unmistakable.
Aside from fish, this efficient raptor will also take the young of water birds such as the lesser flamingo, and very occasionally will go for monkeys, crocodile hatchlings, frogs and insects.
I took dozens of shots of Fish Eagles in Kanana Nature Reserve before I was satisfied with this one, and a few others. My recycle bin is filled with rejected Fish Eagle shots.

This anhinga has spearded this fish underwater and brought it to the surface.
The question remains, how do you get a double speared fish off your twin beaks and down your throat?
Well I will tell you if you have patience.
First and foremost is keep tension on your beaks; keep them spread apart so the fish can't 'wiggle' off your beaks.
Next - keep it at the end of your beak(s) for a long time, why?
Well you want it to stop struggling ....
Then, thrash it all about..................

Now that the anhinga has moved it (quite quickly) up, down, sideways, and upside down, the anhinga prepares for the end of this phase of the process, which is the...........
A statue by Holly Bendall in Porthleven, Cornwall
Posing a powerful environmental question, Holly Bendall's sculpture, Waiting For Fish captures a moment between a man called Dave and a Bird. Intended to make us question where our fish comes from,
We were lucky enough to watch this heron for several minutes as it struggled to dispatch it's rather large prey.
Any help with the fish identification will gratefully be received. I suspect now that it's a short spined sea scorpion.

During the Spring I had a resident Fish Crow that discovered my yard while gathering nesting material for a mate. He started visiting my water fountain every day. My husband wanted to call him Ebenezer but we soon realized that he was a Romeo. Apparently my yard was perfect for courting and he brought his girl friend. I witnessed him gathering a peanut that I leave daily for Blue Jays and gently passed it to his mate. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.
It was a coincidence, on the other side of the little creek were calves that I actually wanted to photograph. Suddenly there was a splash in the water and I was scared. Ah, a small fish, well it could not be the great white shark ;-))) It's not the best quality, but hey, it's a fish and it had to be quick.
Happy Smile on Saturday evening everyone! Stay healthy!!
"Under the sea!
Under the sea!
Darling it's better,
Down where it's wetter,
Take it from me!"
Lyrics from "Under the Sea" from Walt Disney’s Motion picture, "The Little Mermaid" (1989), written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 24th of January is "fish", which left me with a great many options: I have fish patterned fabric and a jug in the shape of a fish, there are carp painted on a large Moorcroft vase I have and I even have some very real looking fish amongst my 1:12 miniatures collection. However, the fish I have opted for, for this week’s theme, is a more unusual one. I would like to introduce you to Fifi the fish, who is made by Bocchetta Plush Toys, a traditional Italian family-owned business based in Burleigh Heads, Australia, with over half a century of experience in creating hand crafted plush toys, having started business in 1948. She came to me as a result of a conference. I don’t know if I was meant to keep Fifi (yes that is the name she came with), but she slipped into my bag and came home to live with me. Unlike any other kind if fish, Fifi is not cold or slippery, she is soft and squashy. Best of all, she doesn’t need to live in water, and she enjoys cuddles, making her a unique species of fish. I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that Fifi makes you smile!

X-ray of flowerhorn fish, a misshapen head, skeleton and the black swim bladder are visible in this image. The stomach, liver, intestines and other organs are located in the space below the swim bladder. This fish is an ornamental cichlid that has been overbred in order to produce the huge head and the very bright (unnatural) colors. Much like pugs and bulldogs, the facial bones are abnormally shortened which can cause feeding and developmental problems.
