These pics were taken of aerialist Alysia Michelle James, a member of "Cirque Alys Aerial Music", during a week of free day-time outdoor performances which culminated in a ticketed, grand finale concert.- on Friday September 28th, 2012.
The whole week was created and designed as an original production for the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, on the University of Alabama Campus at Birmingham.
The performances combined theatre, sculpture, experimentalmusic played on instruments designed by MASS Artistic Director William Close,
and two aerial performers., one of which was Alysia.
A number of images show a series of lines. These are actually the strings of the "Earth Harp" which is strung between the outdoor stage and the top of the Alys Stephens Performing Art Center building.
I have also turned a number of images 90 degrees, to put them on the horizontal, because, to me anyway, they seem more dramatic and accentuate Alysia's posture and the forces that gravity play on her limbs and body.
In a number of images her hair indicates the force of her motion.
Alysia has been a circus artist, professional fire dancer and aerialist for more than four years. She has performed throughout California and Nevada.
One interesting fact is tha Alysia is also a classical pianist and composer and has written music for several films as well as a ballet that toured in three different festivals.
She also wrote music for MASS Ensemble who is the core group for the Cirque Alys Aeriel Music show.
She earned a B.A. degree in composition at the University of California-Santa Barbara.

Lens : Meyer Optik Görlitz Oreston 50mm 1.8 M42 mount manual lens
Very challenging conditions since light levels were pretty low, subject was in constant motion, built in flash would be completely useless and I was shooting with a manual lens.

Most digital SLRs and some advanced compacts have the capacity to change how the flash fires when an exposure is made. Normally the flash is set to front curtain synch, also called first shutter, which means that as soon as the exposure starts the flash fires then the rest of the exposure takes place. If there is a choice, you may choose rear curtain synch (second shutter) which allows the flash to fire at the END of the exposure, not the beginning. Since the shutter speed is usually very fast there is not much difference in the two. The time when there is a difference occurs during long exposures.
A long exposure may mean a quarter of a second or more, depending on how fast objects are moving in the shot. The above shot was given 30 seconds, which was not long enough to really effect the background lighting much (small aperture). However, the time was long enough to make the fire trails well established and the flash illuminated the lady making it all happen. I wanted the flash to go off at the end of the exposure, not the beginning, so set the camera to rear curtain synch and let fly.

At the beginning of this dance, the dancer spun the fire balls fast and low to the earth as she walked forward. A trail of burning forest floor lined her path.
