Small and cute figurines, about 5 cm (2 inches) tall. Shop display in Tianzifang.
Tianzifang (Chin: 田子坊): this is an area of small narrow alleys or "nong" (弄) which has been redeveloped and now features arts shops, restaurants and bars and also enough souvenir shops to make it a one-stop shopping location on the hunt for the "typical" Chinese souvenir. Happy Weekend!
Many thanks for your visit, most appreciated!
This figurine was installed in memory of Igor Sikorsky. He designed his first helicopter at the age of 20.
In 1918, the future aircraft designer left for France, and a year later he became a US citizen, where he founded Sikorsky Aircraft. Thanks to Igor Sikorsky, an unprecedented breakthrough was made in world aviation.
A special gift I received thirty years ago...a beautiful keepsake to remember all of the Goldens I have had. They were all such wonderful dogs and each one left me with beautiful memories.
Cute dog figurine found in a charity store.

Here's an archive photo that I'm fond of from a few years back. Couldn't resist to re-post this. A think it's a juvenile House Sparrow. It spent some time with these small cement figurines of birds.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Malta is its ancient history (and I mean really ancient). They left behind magnificent temples, but also figurines - like this one, dated to about 3600-2500 B.C., making it around 5000 years old!
Fascinating as it is, we also have to be honest with that we know precious little about the belief-system behind these things, so it is not known what the purpose behind these small (and large) statues was (offerings? depiction of gods? depiction of people? something else entirely?).
Figurine on display at The National Museum of Archaeology, Valletta, Malta (it's not a very big museum, but worth a visit).
Theme: "Figurine"

A Hertfordshire village with a big garden centre. I have no idea whether or not these very different cement figurines were lumped together intentionally. Fact is that Great Gaddesden is also the location of a prominent Buddhist monastery. Shot was done with the Fujifilm X-100F (F2, 1/2000).
These were 5 to 6 inch figurines on sale at a gift shop in Old Town, San Diego. The contrast of the colors, ivory, soapstone and other materials made for an interesting bokeh.
Press L and then F11 for a large full-screen view. It makes such a difference.

You would find them in many and perhaps in most of our gardens (mine included). Of course, the garden centres sell them, but why do they and why do we buy such sculptures of children holding a water-spouting fish or that urn with wild men's faces looking at you? It is also true that we have inherited the forms and shapes of these figurines from antiquity and that they re-appeared in the gardens of the rich and the educated particularly from the 18th century on. The garden itself is a kind of alternative world, one of beauty, peace and with space for fantasy. It is therefore not fully controlled by rationality. There are even corners where the uncanny (das Unheimliche) has its place.
