The 20th Fighter Wing flagship F-16CM Fighting Falcon is parked on echo taxiway off the Shaw Air Force Base flightline, June 4, 2015, S.C. The tail of the fighter jet was recently painted to commemorate 50 years of the iconic Wild Weasel mission. The Wild Weasel concept was developed by the United States Air Force in 1965, after the introduction of Soviet Surface to Air Missiles and their downing of U.S. strike aircraft over the skies of North Vietnam. During the Vietnam War the Soviet SA-2 SAM threatened to halt air operations over North Vietnam. To suppress and destroy this threat, the U.S. Air Force countered with the courage and skill of the Wild Weasels, who flew some of the most dangerous missions in Southeast Asia. Fighter pilots are still using the aggressive Wild Weasel tactics in today’s air war, carrying out the legacy of the Wild Weasel in campaigns around the world. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. U.S. Air National Guard Airmen from the 169th Fighter Wing at McEntire Joint National Guard Base, South Carolina, along with retired unit pilots, "Silver Foxes," family and friends upheld a fighter pilot tradition called the "nickel on the grass," August 8, 2020, to remember Maj. Richard 'Guns' Garin, a pilot with the 157th Fighter Squadron. This tradition is held in the highest regard and servces a a final salute to a fallen aviator. Garin passed away on July 28 after a valiant struggle with a sudden, severe medical complication. Garin enlisted in the SCANG in 2002 as a life support technician while attending the University of South Carolina. After graduating in 2006, he was competitively selected for an F-16 fighter pilot position. A veteran of multiple combat tours to the Middle East, Garin dedicated his life to the service of others. We just had a great breakfast and talk. U.S. Marine Corps veterans Lyle (R) and Mason (L). Lyle was an aviation electronics tech (take note of his camera bag -- always with him), and Mason was a Vought F-8 'Crusader' fighter pilot. Both served in Viet Nam, and Mason eventually transferred stateside, where he taught fighter pilots how to maintain the superior edge. The Crusader would be credited with the best kill ratio of any American type in the Vietnam War, 19:3
The F-8 Crusader was the last U.S. fighter designed with guns as its primary weapon. U. S. fighter aircraft are once again being fitted with guns, largely due to the Vietnam airwar experience. Missile-only aircraft were at a distinct disadvantage in the environment many thought passé --- the dogfight. The Crusader with its guns, and Crusader drivers well versed in dogfighting, led to a resurgence in gun-equipped aircraft, and a renewed emphasis in ACM -- Air Combat Maneuvering. The Crusader was aptly nicknamed "Last of the gunfighters" (along with "the Mig Master").

The definite star of the show. Very loud and very fast! Love fly-bys. That about wraps up our little outing to the 2015 Springbank Airshow. Hopefully they had good enough attendance numbers to bring it back. Too busy this weekend to make the Lethbridge Air Show happen, maybe next time.
I like this photo, because it's very "Alberta looking" to me. It's got the blue skies, snow capped mountains, green trees and yellow canola fields. Throw it an oil rig and we'll be set!

Back to April 2012 at Hyakuri Air Force Base in Japan, during a time of increased tension with North Korea due to their missile testing. Consequently, when the usual military runway was already in use, some recoveries were made on the other runway usually reserved for traffic on the civil airport side of the airfield. So, 'right place, right time' as JASDF F-4EJ Phantom 37-8320 from the based 302 Hikotai recovers from a sortie and deploys its brake chute.
From an Album belonging to Oscar Perdomo, who was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross, was a United States Air Force officer who was the last “ace in a day” for the United States in World War II.
