I've posted this cube on MOCpages in May 2014. With the recent hype about "fidget toys" more and more "copies" of this cube are appearing (and even sold) in the web. So I decided to publish (what I consider) the original with it's story on flickr, too:
After some other 3D Lego Puzzles I had the idea to build a "magic folding cube". Cubes like this are often used for promotional or merchandising purposes. I have a picture cube from the first "Lord of the Rings" movie which works the same way. It's not really a puzzle when you play with it, but it was a puzzle to build ;-)).
The idea was to build it as small as possible with an edge length of two studs for the eight "sub cubes". The only possible hinges for such a cube were 1x4 / 2x2 hinge plates. I analysed the position of the hinges on my picture cube and tried to transform them into a working Lego model. I tried a lot of SNOT elements which all didn't work. Then Lego released a new inverted 1x2 / 2x2 SNOT bracket and the folding cube worked with it ;-)).
I wanted to put a black and white "checkered" pattern on the cube, just like I had done with my Soma Cube before. But the brackets only existed in black, grey and red, so I chose a black and red pattern instead. For that I seperated the hinge plates and recombined them.

I have always been a fidgeter... spinning pens, tapping tabletops, and generally unable to keep focus unless my hands were busy doing something. While not everyone is a fidgeter, these fidget cubes are like catnip to people like me.
DNG fromJuly 2012.
Processed to monochrome in July 2022 using 'fill layer' experimentally to create pseudo sepia effect with Affinity Photo software.
"Kit lens" smc PENTAX-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL WR lens set to f4 and its widest zoom setting.
Made from recycle materials display at Marina One's central concourse during Christmas Tree MOments for fund raising.
"I, Fidget, will attack my sister Mouse as she sleeps carelessly on the snow. I will vanquish her and ascend to my rightful position as top dog."
The problem is that it never takes more than two seconds for Mouse to get a firm hold on Fidget's face and shake her back to sanity.
Fair is fair, it took me a little while but in the end I managed to let [FIDGET] stand without any help. She truly bears her name with honor: fiddling fidgeting & fussing π

Having my mobile phone service recently flake out on me specifically during a time in which I very direly needed to call home, set me off on a self-portrait photoshoot tangent (pausing work on the costume I've been creating).
This light-hearted miniseries of portraits is actually a hint at a costume/character I've brainstormed; touching on how alienating and hollow technology dependence can be: how we are all connected but we are all so not connected and missing the essence of life that makes us humans and not robots. On another level, it's also mocking the tinfoil hat trope, and even mocking aspects of myself. I also just realized afterwards that the two green lights on the heat pump could look like cameras to the eyes of a mad tinfoil hatter - Big Brother is always watching!
Inscribed in purple foiled eyeshadow above the eyes are the ubiquitous WiFi symbol/soundwaves/vibrations/ the sonar "technology" that bats use for movement.
As in the childrenβs story book with Stellaluna the lost baby bat raised by a bird family who expect her to live like them: sleep at night, donβt hang upside down; this alien is urged to erase traits intrinsic to her nature, in order to assimilate.
So this empathicalist* extraT, letβs call her Astrid, has forged some armour to block hostile vibrations* because sometimes people try to say that living true to your own nature is bad attitude/bad behaviour just because you don't make a fool of yourself trying to be like them simply to make them feel validated when you know that your sonar senses are the thing that you can truly trust. ββ¦if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.β
The fidget spinner kept handy on her wrist is to symbolize the anxiety epidemic resultant from an ambitious overworked world where people are too busy on the grind and not truly connected β stressed out beyond belief, taking it out on each other and causing rifts. Consistent uber-stress threatens the very fibre of our being to the point that we become who we are not, distorted caricatures of success and glamour. Sheβs kinda like this bizarre alien ninja with her Inspector Gadget-esque sometimes-weaponized fidget spinner. A protector, a lover, a renegade fighter against societally-institutionalized bad vibes. Good vibes only zone. Live love laugh, motherfucker. (but in a creepy gothic and scary kinda way)
When life gives me lemons I say "wtf i ordered lychees!" and I donβt stop βtil I have those lychees, cuz lychees rule. In other words, I stop my crying and make a costume and tableaux vivant (living picture/visual narrative).

Fidget has started laying down her winter coat. This doggie makes hair like clouds make rain.
She looked like this just three months ago.
Fidget just started a low-dose prednisone taper for some hot spots that made a late summer appearance. She has had far less trouble this summer than in previous years, so the whole allergy regime seems to be working.
She's in Boston, Fidget.
Can she come over and sit with me? This is our special spot.

After lengthy deliberation, Fidget dug her hideout on a shady, well-drained ledge near the porch. She can see the front half of our property from there and it's hard to see her because she's tucked into the edge of a thicket.
She was lying there drowsing, but snapped to attention when a neighbor opened his front door 200 yards away.
