Livestock guardian dogs Fidget and mouse watch Molly as she plants poppy seeds in a rocky ravine behind the barn. They worry when either of us ventures down into the gully.
Fidget asleep on the porch, late afternoon.
Our thoughts are with Flickr friend Roger whose beloved Pyr friend Grace is crossing over tonight.

I liked the concept of Mattel's autistic Barbie a lot, so I made my own.

Time to do some guarding.
I'm away from Flickr because I'm spending all my time working on antennas. I hope to be back next week.
There are many benefits to labelling children's clothes, including making it easier to keep track of their belongings and ensuring that they are properly dressed for school or other activities. Iron-on clothing labels are a convenient and durable option for labeling clothes, and they can be easily applied at home with a few simple supplies.

Granger continues to settle in. He was grim and withdrawn today when strangers were working inside his paddock. He relaxed after they left, becoming positively frisky, running great looping ellipses around me, and bounding and playing with Fidget and Mouse. It was great to see how happy he was. He still doesn't want to be touched of course, and his stand-off distance is about the same. It looks like it will be weeks to months before we can touch him freely.
Granger's getting along well with the other doggies. He seems more thrilled to be with Fidget and Mouse than they are to be with him, though they're all behaving admirably. Rabbit, who doesn't allow any dog other than Fidget to touch her, barked Granger off when he gave a play slap in front of her. He tried again a couple of hours later and obtained the same result. Both times he backed right off and didn't seem upset at all.
We've now completely switched Granger over from the diet he was getting at Home at Last Dog Rescue to our own homemade dog food. He seems pleased with the new diet, and he had no GI upsets when switching over. We are gradually ramping up his rations. He needs a lot of food because he's underweight and living outdoors. (BTW, living outdoors in winter is not a hardship. Pyrs are happiest when they're living outdoors and the temperature is around -10C (14F)). Granger's getting a vitamin supplement, soft, pressure-cooked pork bones for calcium and phosphorous, and hard bones for teething. His molars are coming in months late owing to malnutrition.
The Pyrs have to eat more during the winter because they're outside. In fact it's best if their winter weight allows just enough fat to make their ribs a little hard to feel. Here's what we fed them today:
Mouse and Granger - 800gm each
Fidget - 500gm (Fidget is only outdoors at night)
Rabbit - 300gm
That's 2.4 kg (5+ lb) per day! We make dog food in 19-kg (41-lb) batches, so we'll be making food about every 8 days. It takes a day to cook up a batch, but hands-on time is only an hour.
Fidget got a fungal ear infection during hurricane week. We treated it with a mixture of isopropanol, gentian violet and boric acid, chemicals that we keep on-hand. Something from the azole antifungal family would have been less colorful, but we used what we had. Fidget's infection cleared promptly, but she's showing some side effects as seen above. :)
And I've been blue and exhausted myself since we got our power restored and I had leisure to collapse. I was just finishing up a round of antibiotics for bronchitis when the storm blew in. Molly was sick with a cold the whole time our power was out. I will get to your photostreams later in the week, I promise.
I am genuinely grateful for how well things worked out for us during and after the storm, but things are still pretty bad in the Northeast.
It was 23F (-5C) last night and a million people are still without power. Most of them were poorly prepared. Most didn't have a clue as to how to survive comfortably or even safely without power or running water. They're suffering pretty badly, at least according to the standards by which developed nations measure such things.
There's a nor'easter, a harsh species of Atlantic storm, coming tomorrow. It's not clear whether or where the thing will come ashore, but there will be two to four three to six inches of snow, more downed trees and further flooding, especially if it comes in at high tide. We're not expecting it to amount to much here, but I picked up a couple of chains for the chainsaw yesterday in case we had more downed trees. There were five of us lined up buying saw chains. All the pre-cut chains had long since vanished. The shop was making them up from raw stock as we bought them.
FEMA has been largely absent here. I have not seen one FEMA worker since Sandy struck. I absolutely do not speak ill of FEMA employees. The ones I have met have been helpful and knowledgeable.. It's only that the probability of encountering a FEMA worker becomes vanishingly low if the scale of the disaster is sufficiently large.
In my direct experience, FEMA has long been unprepared to deal with large-scale disasters, and that, at least nominally, is their job. They're fine when a tornado wipes out one or two square miles -- as happened to my Mom's house and neighborhood -- but they are hopelessly overwhelmed when the disaster area extends for a couple of hundred miles.
I'm speaking from experience here. We have family on the Gulf Coast and have seen FEMA up close during the Katrina disaster and in the aftermath of Rita and Ike. I mean, we were there. Molly's father died of exposure during Hurricane Rita as he was waiting for an airlift to an inland hospital. People are still dying in New Jersey and New York today.
The lesson here is that if you have enough resources to make disaster preparations, you need to do so. Despite our fancy US standard of living, North America's Atlantic and Gulf Coasts are dangerous places to live. If you rely on federal, state or local government for help in a large-scale disaster, you're very likely not to get any help at all. The only people here who fared well in the recent hurricane were those who were prepared to take care of every single detail themselves.
When a large-scale disaster hits, you don't -- and I mean really don't -- want to be in a densely populated American city or to be dependent upon others to save your bacon. We're grateful we got out of this one relatively unscathed.

We went on walkabout. Flint said, "Stay!".
We laughed and said "See ya, slowpoke!".
Then we got skunked.
It's just awful.

A fishing themed Busy Hands Fidget Apron for the July 2013 Hopeful Threads project. Blogged: www.fishsticksdesigns.com/blog/the-fishermans-fidget-apron/
This is number 2 in my new Stocking Stuffers, Gift of the Day.
The design for this bangle evolved as I fidgeted with it. I started with a single bead on a wire. The simplest bead I could find, made of wood. As much as I liked that, the design needed something to keep the bead on the front of the hand.
I added another loop of wire to help focus the bead. The new design worked! You can push it to the back, if you like. But can also keep it on the front. An added bonus - there are three ways to fiddle with this bracelet. Slide the bead around the hoop, twirl the bead around the wire and twirl the wire loop around the bead. It's loads of kinetic fun!
Makes everything else go vague and blurry.
Especially when you're just back from a week at Doc Thayer's doggie dungeon.
Production photos by Debbie Robbins from Fidget Feet's marvellous new show The Elves and the Shoemaker which comes to An Grianán in December 2013
Meet Herman and Daisy,
They want to make shoes for your feet.
But they owe so much money they barely can eat.
Don’t worry though, because magic is always just around the corner. The Elves are here to help! And sometimes the answers are right above your head.
Fidget Feet’s The Elves & The Shoemaker is immersive storytelling with music and aerial circus for children aged between 4-8yrs and their families.
There is no stage, you will join them inside their workshop and actually help them to make the best pair of shoes ever made. This show is supported by The Arts Council, The Backstage Theatre, Longford and The Source Arts Centre, Thurles.
Herman, Daisy and the Elves need you!
4pm performance only: You can fly too!
After the main performance the children of the audience will have the opportunity to fly. There will be a short, thirty minute, aerial workshop supervised by the Fidget Feet cast and crew where children will learn some basic moves and lifts on Aerial Cocoons. This is an extremely fun, easy and safe introduction to Aerial for young children.
